For lossy audio, a higher bitrate gives an encoder more data to represent the sound and can improve fidelity—but it also increases file size or streaming data use. It does not guarantee an audible improvement. Codec, encoder settings, the audio itself, and listening conditions all matter. Lossless audio is different: decoding it reproduces the original data, so a higher lossless bitrate does not add fidelity beyond the source.

What bitrate tells you—and what it does not

Bitrate is the amount of encoded audio data represented or delivered per second, commonly expressed in kilobits per second (kbit/s). For the same duration, a higher average bitrate generally produces a larger file and uses more data when streamed.

In lossy compression, an encoder removes some information to fit a data budget, often using perceptual methods to discard information it predicts will matter less to listeners. More bits can give the encoder room to preserve more of the signal. As MDN puts it, “The higher the bit rate, the higher the quality can be”—not that it must be higher or that listeners will necessarily hear a difference. MDN’s audio codec guide explains how codec configuration affects the result.

Bitrate is not interchangeable with sample rate or bit depth. Those describe different properties of digital audio; none alone is a complete measure of perceived quality.

Why the same bitrate can sound different

Codec and encoder settings

Codecs use different methods to represent audio, and implementations and settings can differ even within a format. Two files encoded at the same bitrate are therefore not necessarily equivalent. Rate-control modes also vary: a codec or tool may target a constant rate, an average rate, or a quality setting that allows bitrate to vary.

Source material

Some audio is harder to compress than other audio. Noise and hiss add complexity, and the source’s content can affect how an encoder allocates data. MDN notes that bitrate, frequency bandwidth, and stereo-coding choices can affect encoded quality and size. A bitrate that works well for one track is not a universal threshold for another.

Listener and playback conditions

A lossy file can be perceptually transparent: a listener may be unable to distinguish it from its source under particular conditions, even though the decoded data is not identical. Whether a difference is noticeable depends on the material, the listener, and the playback setup. A larger file or a higher bitrate label by itself does not establish that one version sounds better.

Lossy bitrate versus lossless audio

Lossy encoding trades away some information to reduce file size. Lossless compression reduces size without changing the original data when decoded. MDN describes decoding a lossless format such as FLAC or ALAC as reproducing the original sound “down to the bit.” A lossless file’s bitrate reflects how much data its encoded representation uses; it is not a quality scale above the original.

For everyday playback, a lossy format may be a practical choice when bandwidth or storage matters and the fidelity trade-off is acceptable. For archiving, production, or editing that may involve later compression, keeping a lossless source preserves the original data. Re-encoding a lossy file can compound artifacts, so use a lossless source for further work where feasible. MDN’s digital audio concepts guide covers the distinction between lossy and lossless audio.

How to compare two encodings fairly

To find out whether a specific bitrate or codec change is audible to you, compare the actual files rather than relying on their labels. Audacity recommends controlled listening, including ABX tests, for evaluating audio quality. An ABX test presents known samples A and B and asks whether you can identify which one a hidden sample X matches.

  1. Identify the files. Record the source, codec, encoder and settings, bitrate mode, and playback setup for each version.
  2. Match playback loudness. A louder sample can seem better even when the encoding itself is not responsible for the preference.
  3. Listen under controlled conditions. Compare the same passages without looking at filenames or bitrate labels, and repeat the comparison.
  4. Use ABX if you need a stronger check. Try to identify hidden samples reliably rather than judging from file size, a spectrogram, or a single casual listen.

The result applies to the listener, files, and conditions tested; it does not prove what everyone will hear. Audacity’s discussion of audio quality explains why transparency is listener- and content-dependent. Codec comparisons likewise need matched conditions: the Opus comparison page summarizes tests with different content, sample rates, and bitrates and warns against reading exact quality at a particular bitrate from its overview graph. Neither a universal bitrate threshold nor a reliable conversion such as “this Opus rate equals that MP3 rate” follows from those comparisons.

Choosing a setting for your use

  • Streaming on a limited connection: A lower setting can reduce data use; whether the trade-off is acceptable depends on your listening conditions and preferences.
  • Downloading for routine listening: Choose a setting that balances storage with the quality you can hear and want. A higher setting costs more storage but is not automatically a perceptible upgrade.
  • Keeping an archive or editing later: Choose lossless storage when exact reproduction of the source matters, and avoid making a lossy encode the only copy if you expect to edit or re-encode it.
  • Deciding between two particular files: Compare them at matched loudness in a controlled listening test; the bitrate number alone cannot settle the question.

What controlled tests can—and cannot—show

Listening studies can establish how particular encoders perform under specified conditions, not a universal ranking for every file and listener. A BBC Research & Development report, A subjective evaluation of high bitrate coding of music, concluded that its test showed AAC encoders could preserve the quality of the original audio. That finding is specific to the report’s tested context; it does not establish that all AAC settings are transparent for every listener or recording.

For the broader explanation of lossy and lossless encoding, see MDN’s digital audio concepts and audio codec guide.
