Build a reusable React button around a native <button>, expose a small set of purposeful props, and pass ordinary button attributes and event handlers through to the element. Use it for actions; use a link for navigation. This keeps the component consistent without taking away familiar HTML behavior.
Build a small native button component
React components can be reused and configured with props; React’s documentation describes how to “combine them into reusable, nestable components.” The prop names and visual variants below are design choices, not special React requirements. This example offers a variant and a disabled state while accepting the normal attributes of a button.
import type { ButtonHTMLAttributes } from "react";
import "./Button.css";
type ButtonProps = ButtonHTMLAttributes<HTMLButtonElement> & {
variant?: "primary" | "secondary";
};
export function Button({
variant = "primary",
type = "button",
className = "",
...props
}: ButtonProps) {
return (
<button
type={type}
className={`button button--${variant} ${className}`.trim()}
{...props}
/>
);
}
Consumers can then use the same component for different actions while retaining native options such as onClick, disabled, name, and value:
<Button onClick={saveChanges}>Save changes</Button>
<Button variant="secondary" disabled>Unavailable</Button>
<Button type="submit">Submit form</Button>
The default type="button" avoids accidentally submitting a form when the component is used inside one. Set type="submit" explicitly when submission is intended.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the styling API purposeful
A variant should represent a meaningful design-system choice, such as primary versus secondary emphasis. Avoid a prop for every CSS detail; that makes the component harder to use consistently. Keep the styles local to the component:
/* Button.css */
.button {
border: 0;
border-radius: 0.25rem;
cursor: pointer;
font: inherit;
padding: 0.65rem 1rem;
}
.button--primary {
background: #155eef;
color: #fff;
}
.button--secondary {
background: #eef2f6;
color: #182230;
}
.button:focus-visible {
outline: 3px solid #fdb022;
outline-offset: 2px;
}
.button:disabled {
cursor: not-allowed;
opacity: 0.6;
}
Check focus-indicator visibility and text contrast in the actual theme and surrounding context; a color combination that works in isolation may not work against every background.

Use a button for actions and a link for navigation
A button performs an action, such as saving, opening a dialog, or submitting a form. A link takes the user to another location. They may share visual styling, but keep their semantics separate: use a native button for actions and an anchor or dedicated link component for navigation. A button that conditionally renders as an unrelated element can lose expected behavior or require additional accessibility work.
For a button that should look like a link, retain the button element and apply the appropriate styling. For navigation that should look like a button, retain a link and apply button-like styling instead.

Preserve accessible names and keyboard behavior
Write clear action labels
Use concise text that explains what activation will do, such as “Save changes” or “Delete account.” Short, action-oriented labels help users understand the result before activating the control.
Name icon-only buttons
If the button shows only an icon, provide an accessible name with aria-label or aria-labelledby. For example:

The icon alone does not tell screen-reader users what the control does. Keep the button keyboard-operable and retain a visible focus indicator in custom styles.

The native disabled attribute prevents normal activation of a disabled button. Use it when the control should be unavailable, and make its visual state distinguishable without relying on color alone.

A pending state is a separate interaction design decision. Adding a boolean prop or spinner does not by itself define whether the control can be activated, whether it retains focus, or whether assistive technology is informed that work is in progress. React Aria documents a pending button behavior that prevents press and hover while retaining focusability and announcing the pending state. If you implement your own pending behavior, explicitly decide and implement activation, focus, and announcement behavior rather than assuming a visual spinner is sufficient.
Also, aria-disabled="true" communicates a disabled state but does not itself stop activation. If using it instead of native disabled, application code must prevent the action and handle the interaction consistently.
When to use React Aria instead
A small native component is a good fit when your team wants direct control over markup, styling, and state, and is prepared to own those details. React Aria is an alternative when you want documented interaction and accessibility behavior while keeping responsibility for your DOM structure and visual styling. Its button behavior covers mouse, keyboard, touch, focus, and ARIA concerns, and its button API distinguishes actions from links.
| Approach | Interaction behavior | Markup and styling | Dependency and API surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native React button | Uses browser button behavior; your component owns added state and accessibility details. | You control the native button and its styles. | No button-specific library dependency; keep the component API as small as your design system needs. |
| React Aria button behavior | Adobe documents behavior for mouse, keyboard, touch, focus, and ARIA, including distinct disabled and pending behavior. | You retain control of DOM structure and styling. | Adds React Aria’s API and dependency surface; its primitives can be adopted incrementally. |
Choose based on the interaction requirements of your application, the scope of your design system, and whether you want to own the behavioral details or adopt a documented primitive. Neither approach is the right choice for every project.
