There is no single software skill that is indispensable to everyone. A tool becomes especially valuable when learning it lets you solve problems beyond its obvious, first use—and which tool that is depends on the work you want to do.

What makes a software skill indispensable?

In a September 19, 2026, Hackaday article, Elliot Williams frames the question as one of reach: what tools, like CAD, open up a wider range of applications once you know them well? His point is not that every reader needs the same software. It is that practiced skill can turn a tool into a flexible way to think and work.

That distinction matters. Opening a program is not the same as being proficient with it, just as owning a physical tool does not mean you know how to use it effectively. Learning takes practice, and the payoff depends on whether the tool fits problems you actually encounter. Williams’s article is an open discussion prompt, not a survey or a validated ranking of essential skills. Read the Hackaday article.

CAD: from making parts to thinking in three dimensions

Williams’s central example shows how CAD can be useful before anything is manufactured. A CNC designer modeled an electronics cabinet, arranging downloaded components on virtual DIN rails, modeling hinges, and checking that parts would fit before buying them. The model helped answer practical questions about layout and compatibility in advance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

CAD’s value need not stop at fabrication. Williams notes that someone comfortable with it can use the software to sketch three-dimensional ideas, including concepts that are not intended for a machine. That broader use is the important lesson: learning a tool deeply can make it useful for visualizing and exploring problems beyond its most obvious purpose.

Other tools readers named—and the jobs they suit

Hackaday commenters suggested a range of tools and skills. These are personal recommendations from people in the discussion, not evidence that the tools are essential for everyone. A practical way to consider them is to start with the task and ask whether learning the tool would transfer to nearby tasks.

Tool or skill Task it can help with How to judge its fit
Vim or vi Editing and navigating text Consider it if you regularly work with text and want to learn a specialized editing workflow; its usefulness depends on your environment and habits.
Emacs Text editing and related work Commenters named it as a broadly useful tool. Whether its learning effort pays off depends on the tasks you would use it for.
Excel Tabular processing and calculations Useful when your problem is naturally represented in a spreadsheet. The discussion also includes cautions about spreadsheet defaults and sensitive values, so consider whether a spreadsheet is appropriate for the data and task.
VBA Automating tasks associated with Excel Worth considering when you have repeated spreadsheet work that could benefit from automation; it is not a universal substitute for choosing the right tool.
SQL Querying structured data A commenter recommendation for work involving structured data. Its relevance depends on whether your tasks involve data that is better handled through queries than manual spreadsheet work.
Inkscape Vector illustration and diagrams Consider it when your work calls for vector graphics or diagrams; it addresses a different kind of problem from CAD’s three-dimensional modeling.
Regular expressions Finding or transforming text patterns A commenter-named skill that can transfer across tasks involving text. It is most relevant when pattern-based text work recurs.
PowerPoint Creating presentations One commenter included it among useful software skills. Its value depends on whether communicating through presentations is part of your work.

The comments also disagree about spreadsheets and data work. Treat those remarks as individual experience rather than a general finding about Excel or a rule for every dataset. The useful takeaway is to match the tool to the task instead of assuming that a familiar program is always the right one.

How to choose what to learn next

  1. Start with a recurring problem. Identify work you do often, or a kind of problem you would like to solve. Do not start with a tool’s popularity alone.
  2. Match the problem to the tool’s natural strengths. Three-dimensional layout may point toward CAD; text editing toward Vim, vi, or Emacs; tabular processing toward Excel; structured queries toward SQL; and vector diagrams toward Inkscape. These are examples from the article and its comments, not a universal ranking.
  3. Check whether the skill transfers. Ask whether learning the tool could help with adjacent tasks, as CAD can support both fabrication planning and informal three-dimensional sketching.
  4. Account for the learning effort. Williams compares software proficiency with learning a physical tool: simply opening a program does not make you proficient. He informally estimates that becoming comfortable with CAD might take a couple of days, but that is his contextual estimate, not a measured training duration or a promise for every learner.
  5. Use the right tool for sensitive or consequential work. The thread’s spreadsheet discussion is a reminder to consider how a tool handles the kind of data and task you have. The comments do not establish a universal verdict on spreadsheets; they do show why convenience alone should not decide.

Why there is no universal list

The Hackaday discussion asks readers to share tools that have broad reach; it does not establish a consensus about what workers or software users generally need. Suggestions such as Emacs, Excel, SQL, and regular expressions reflect commenters’ own priorities and experience. No productivity gains, formal skill rankings, or current software-version comparisons are established in the article.
