No single setting reliably removes every ad.
Choose the right level of ad blocking

These methods use different mechanisms, so they are not interchangeable. DNS filtering blocks lookups to listed domains; browser filters can apply content rules within a browser. There are no independent comparative effectiveness measurements in the sources cited here, so it would be misleading to rank these options by how many ads they block.
Set up Android Private DNS
Android 9 and later support Private DNS using DNS-over-TLS. With a filtering provider, this can block DNS requests to domains on that provider’s lists, including requests from apps that use the system resolver. It will not necessarily remove ads served from the same domain as the content, or clear the space an ad occupied. Google documents the feature and setup in its Android Private DNS instructions; Android’s developer documentation describes DNS transport security in Insecure DNS Setup.
- Open Settings and go to Network & Internet → Advanced → Private DNS. Your device maker may use different labels; search Settings for “Private DNS” if you cannot find it.
- Select the option to enter a Private DNS provider hostname, type the hostname supplied by the filtering provider, and save. The hostname is provider-specific; do not guess it.
- Test the sites and apps you use. If connectivity breaks, return to Private DNS and choose Automatic or Off to check whether the setting caused the problem.
A VPN or DNS-changer feature can override Private DNS, according to Google’s setup guidance. If filtering appears not to take effect, check whether you have a VPN, DNS changer, managed profile, or browser-specific secure DNS setting active.

Use Firefox’s DNS-over-HTTPS controls
Firefox for Android has its own DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) setting, separate from Android’s Private DNS. Depending on Firefox’s protection mode, the browser may use its selected resolver rather than the device’s resolver. Mozilla documents the controls under Firefox menu → Settings → Privacy & Security → DNS over HTTPS in its guide to Firefox for Android DNS-over-HTTPS protection levels.
- Default: Uses secure DNS when available and can fall back to the default resolver. It may be disabled by parental-control or enterprise policies, or when a network requests it.
- Increased: Keeps the selected provider active, with a backup option when issues occur.
- Max: Requires secure DNS; Firefox reports an error if it cannot connect or the resolver returns no address.
- Off: Turns off Firefox’s DoH protection.
If you configure a filtering resolver at the Android level but Firefox uses a different resolver, the two settings may produce different filtering results. Choose settings with that distinction in mind, especially on managed networks or when strict blocking could prevent a site from loading.

Adjust Brave’s content filters
Brave provides browser-level filter controls on Android. Open Settings → Brave Shields & privacy → Content filtering to manage filters; Brave’s Help Center says the page includes an Update control. Its documentation also says Brave is broadly compatible with uBlock Origin filter-rule syntax. These controls apply to browsing in Brave, not generally to other apps. Consider a dedicated filtering app carefully
AdGuard describes its Android app as filtering ad and tracking requests in browsers and apps through local traffic filtering and DNS features. It also describes certificate-based inspection for HTTPS filtering. Those are vendor-described capabilities, not independent performance results. An app that routes or inspects device traffic deserves careful scrutiny: install only from a source you trust, review its permissions and certificate prompts, and understand what traffic it can handle. AdGuard says its Android app is not available through Google Play and provides other installation routes. Installing an APK outside Google Play means taking responsibility for verifying the source and permitting installation from that source in Android settings. Do not install an APK from an unofficial download site simply because it claims to offer the same app.

If ads appear in a particular game, streaming app, or service, check its settings or the publisher’s official information for an ad-free tier or purchase option. Availability and terms vary by app. This is often simpler than changing device-wide network behavior, but it only addresses the app if its publisher actually offers the option.

Troubleshoot when ads remain or apps stop connecting
- Ads remain in one browser: Check that browser’s filter settings and resolver mode. Device Private DNS does not guarantee browser-level cosmetic filtering.
- Ads remain in one app: The app may use a resolver that bypasses the system setting, or its ads may not be blocked by DNS filtering. Check for an official in-app ad-free choice.
- Some sites or apps fail after changing DNS: Restore Private DNS to Automatic or Off, then check for a VPN or DNS changer that affects resolver selection.
- Firefox behaves differently from other apps: Review its DoH protection level and selected provider. Default can fall back; Max can prevent loading when secure DNS is unavailable.
- Filtering app does not affect browser traffic: Consult the app maker’s current browser setup guidance and confirm the installation and permissions are complete.
