Check the app’s genuine upstream project and the exact package source you plan to install, then assess recent development, maintainer responses, security handling, and the package’s update support. No single badge or “last updated” date settles the question: a stable app may be quiet, and a distribution may ship an older version while still supporting it.

How to assess a Linux app’s maintenance

Use these checks close to installation, because project and package status can change. Keep track of the upstream repository, your distribution and repository or channel, the package version, and the date you checked.

  1. Confirm the project’s identity. Start at the project’s official website or a trusted distribution listing, then follow its links to the source repository and download page. Verify the project name, repository owner, and whether the code is an official project or a fork. Similar names can lead to typosquatting or an unrelated personal fork; OpenSSF recommends checking authenticity before relying on a project (OpenSSF’s evaluation guide).
  2. Look for meaningful activity, not just a recent date. Review commits, tagged releases, changelog entries, and project announcements. A cosmetic change may not indicate ongoing support, while a stable utility may not need frequent updates. Check whether the project is archived or read-only.
  3. Read the issue and contribution history. Look for maintainers acknowledging bug reports, answering questions, reviewing or closing pull requests, and explaining release plans. Consider whether multiple people contribute or the project relies on one maintainer. OpenSSF’s guide suggests looking for significant activity and a release within the previous 12 months as prompts, not universal deadlines. ENISA also recommends examining contributors, commits, changelogs, security files, issues, pull requests, releases, and maintainer identity; its examples focus largely on npm/Node.js, though it says equivalent checks apply to other ecosystems (ENISA technical advisory, version 1.1, published March 2026).
  4. Check security handling separately. Find SECURITY.md or equivalent reporting instructions, security advisories, and evidence of patched releases or dependency updates. Search by the exact package and ecosystem, then inspect affected version ranges rather than relying on a name match. GitHub’s Advisory Database can be filtered by ecosystem, package, date, severity, review status, and malware advisory type (GitHub’s guide to browsing the database). No result there means only that the database did not show an advisory; it does not prove the app has no vulnerabilities.
  5. Inspect the package you will actually install. Record the distribution, repository or channel, package version, and available update history. Compare the package version with upstream releases if practical. Distribution packages can intentionally lag upstream, and distributions may backport fixes; version age alone is not proof of neglect. OpenSSF notes that package-manager publication can simplify installation, updates, removal, and delivery of security patches (OpenSSF Scorecard checks for Maintained and Packaging).
  6. Verify download provenance where possible. Prefer your distribution’s official repository or a download linked from the genuine upstream project. Check signatures or published hashes when available. For GitHub releases, the GitHub CLI provides gh release verify RELEASE-TAG to check release immutability and gh release verify-asset RELEASE-TAG ARTIFACT-PATH to compare a local artifact with a release asset. GitHub says this method cannot verify generated source-code ZIP files or tarballs (GitHub’s release-integrity instructions). Integrity verification helps establish that an artifact matches a release; it does not establish that the project is actively maintained.

How much weight to give dates and automated scores

Use time windows as clues, not pass-or-fail rules. OpenSSF Scorecard’s GitHub-only Maintained check gives its highest score when a project has at least one commit per week during the previous 90 days. The check also considers maintainer-side issue activity, applies only to GitHub-hosted projects, and cannot assess projects less than 90 days old. It is an automated heuristic, not a universal definition of maintenance or a safety guarantee (Scorecard documentation).

OpenSSF’s evaluation guide uses significant activity and a release within the previous 12 months as useful prompts. Neither that period nor Scorecard’s weekly-commit measure suits every project: expected update frequency depends on what the software does, and active issue responses or security fixes may matter more than a stream of commits.

Compare candidate apps and installation sources consistently

If you are choosing between apps or ways to install one, compare the same factors for each. A popularity count or automated score cannot replace checks of identity, support, and the package you will receive.

Check What to compare
Authenticity and origin Whether the project and repository are genuine, and whether the package comes from an official distribution source or an upstream-linked download.
Recent upstream work The age and significance of commits, releases, changelog entries, and announcements in light of the app’s purpose.
Release cadence Whether releases appear at a pace that makes sense for the app, not whether it meets a universal schedule.
Maintainer continuity Whether maintainers respond to reports and contributions, communicate plans, and share responsibility.
Security response Whether users can report problems and whether advisories, fixes, and affected version ranges are visible.
Distribution package support The package version and update support in your specific distribution and repository, including relevant backports.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When to proceed, investigate, or choose another app

  • More reassuring: You can trace the package to a credible project, find maintainers communicating and handling reports, see releases or other work appropriate to the app, and identify a trustworthy installation source.
  • Investigate further: Several signals are stale, a project is archived, important reports go unanswered, or known security issues appear unresolved. Look for an official explanation or a maintained successor before installing.
  • Do not treat quiet as a verdict: A small or stable utility may need little change. OpenSSF advises that a lack of active maintenance should prompt users to investigate the circumstances; it is not automatically a problem for every project (Scorecard Maintained check).

Maintenance checks help you judge current support, not guarantee that software is safe or will remain supported. Assess the actual version and source you intend to install, and keep the date of your check with those details.
