If a custom recovery displays “Error applying update: 7” and “Updater process ended with ERROR: 1” while installing a ROM or update ZIP, the message alone does not identify the cause. A third-party guide describes a workaround involving the device’s super partition, but it is not a universal fix. Confirm your exact phone, ROM build, recovery and installation instructions before changing partitions.
What these recovery errors mean
The messages are reported during installation of a ROM or update ZIP through custom recovery, including TWRP, OrangeFox and AOSP recovery. They are not, by themselves, a diagnosis: the title does not identify a phone, ROM, recovery version, slot or full installation log, so the specific cause cannot be determined from the error text alone.
One possible area to investigate is dynamic partition metadata. Android’s dynamic partitions documentation explains that “The super partition contains metadata listing the names and block ranges of each dynamic partition within super.” OTA operations can create, resize or delete these partitions, and A/B devices maintain metadata copies associated with their slots. That makes partition layout relevant to some installation problems, but does not establish that it caused every instance of this error.
Before trying a partition workaround
- Check the ROM maintainer’s installation instructions for your exact device and build, including which recovery and installation path are supported.
- Verify that the ROM ZIP and any image you plan to use are intended for the precise phone model and build. Do not substitute an image for a different device or release.
- Identify the device’s slot context and the fastboot mode required by its documentation. Android’s fastbootd documentation describes a userspace fastboot implementation; bootloader fastboot and fastbootd must not be assumed to behave identically for dynamic-partition operations.
- Make sure you understand the possible data-loss and bootability consequences of the operation, and follow the ROM maintainer’s directions rather than improvising commands.
The reported super_empty.img procedure
Droidwin’s guide, updated April 16, 2026, reports this procedure for the error: obtain the ROM developer’s super_empty.img when available, connect the phone to a computer, enter the fastboot mode specified for the device, run fastboot wipe-super super_empty.img, reboot to recovery, and continue the ROM installation. The guide suggests a fallback image only when it is for the same OS build and device.

This is a third-party troubleshooting procedure, not an official or universal Android fix, and it is not guaranteed to work. Use the image and mode specified by the ROM developer or device documentation; do not run the command solely because the error text matches. What to provide for a case-specific diagnosis
If the installation still fails, collect the information needed to distinguish a package, recovery, slot or partition-layout issue before attempting another change:

- Phone model and intended device codename, if the ROM maintainer uses one.
- ROM ZIP name and build, plus the ROM’s installation instructions.
- Recovery name and version.
- Current slot context, if applicable, and the fastboot mode used.
- The full recovery installation log, not just the final error lines.
A USB data cable may be needed to connect the phone to a computer for ADB or Fastboot steps; choose a connector compatible with the device. The cable provides connectivity and does not repair a partition error.
