There is no universal list: which picture controls Game mode disables depends on the TV model and whether low-latency behavior was selected manually or activated by ALLM or VRR. Motion processing is a common restriction, but some basic picture controls may remain available.
Why a picture setting may be unavailable
A greyed-out control does not necessarily mean Game mode has disabled it by itself. The TV may be applying a low-latency preset, responding to an automatic mode change from the console, or enforcing a restriction associated with VRR or a particular HDMI signal format. A control may be unavailable, forced to a value, or locked because another setting is active; those behaviors are not interchangeable.
- TV model and year: Menu names and restrictions vary, even within one brand.
- How Game mode was selected: You may have selected it manually, or the TV may have switched modes automatically through ALLM.
- VRR and HDMI format: Active variable refresh rate or a particular signal format can limit available picture modes.
- Control type: Motion, local-dimming, detail-processing, and basic image controls may each behave differently.
Examples from LG and Sony TVs
LG: TruMotion and ALLM
LG says TruMotion cannot be set while Game mode is selected in its PS5 troubleshooting guidance. For some games running below 60 Hz, LG describes turning ALLM off if the viewer wants to use TruMotion to smooth motion; the page notes that game behavior can vary. This is guidance for the relevant LG TV and console setup, not a rule for every LG model. LG PS5 troubleshooting guidance.
LG separately warns that ALLM can prevent picture adjustment: “When ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) is set to [Auto] to increase response speed for input signal from the game console, the picture quality of your LG TV cannot be adjusted.” LG recommends turning ALLM off when you want to customize picture quality. That restriction is tied to ALLM being set to Auto, rather than establishing a universal list of Game mode restrictions. LG Game Optimizer and ALLM guidance.

Sony: VRR, picture mode, and other controls
Sony says a PS5 can cause a compatible TV to switch its content type or Picture mode to Game when ALLM is active. For the cited XBR-65X900H setup, using HDMI signal format “Enhanced format (VRR)” prevents changing Picture mode away from Game. Sony’s same guidance says brightness, contrast, and colour intensity can still be adjusted in Game mode, showing that basic picture adjustments are not necessarily locked. Sony PS5 picture settings guidance.
Sony also says certain functions are disabled in Game mode on models from 2023 onward, including motion blur reduction and Auto local dimming. Its guidance on Reality Creation/Resolution describes detail enhancement and noise reduction, with Game mode limitations that depend on the model. These are model-specific examples, not settings that are disabled on every Sony television. Sony picture-adjustment guide and Sony OLED picture-adjustment guide.

How to find what is locking a control
- Identify the exact TV model and year. Use the model number from the TV’s settings or label, then open that model’s support guide. Brand-level advice may not match your menu.
- Check how Game mode was activated. If the TV switched automatically, check the TV’s ALLM setting and the connected console’s video or HDMI options. On the cited LG guidance, ALLM set to Auto prevents picture adjustment; LG says to turn it off to customize picture quality.
- Check whether VRR is active. Look for VRR in the console’s video settings and the TV’s HDMI signal-format options. Sony’s XBR-65X900H example ties the inability to leave Game picture mode to Enhanced format (VRR).
- Recheck the specific control. Consult the guide for that model and setting. A motion feature such as TruMotion may be unavailable while basic adjustments remain accessible, or the TV may lock the overall Picture mode instead.
- Decide whether to keep the low-latency behavior. Turning off ALLM or changing a VRR-related option may restore a picture control, but it can change how the TV and console handle low-latency gaming. Use the model’s instructions and consider the trade-off before changing settings.
Should you turn Game mode off?
Only if the picture adjustment matters more to you than the low-latency behavior Game mode is intended to provide. For a particular restriction, first check whether ALLM or VRR is responsible; you may be able to change that condition rather than disabling the entire gaming preset. The exact model guide is the reliable source for menu paths and supported combinations.
