KL-Remote was a banking-fraud toolkit described by IBM Security Trusteer researchers in 2015. In the reported attack, malware on a victim’s computer let a criminal monitor a legitimate online-banking session, place a convincing prompt over the bank page, and operate the computer while the customer saw a waiting screen. The sources document observed use in Brazil at that time; they do not establish that KL-Remote remains active or show how common this technique is today.
What is a remote overlay attack?
A remote overlay attack manipulates what a person sees during a session on a legitimate website. In the KL-Remote case, the attack began with an infected computer rather than a link to a separate, counterfeit banking site. The toolkit combined remote access to the victim’s desktop with a bank-themed screen overlay and prompts designed to collect information.
That distinction matters: the customer could be visiting the real bank while malware and an operator controlled what appeared on the screen. SecurityWeek’s January 14, 2015 report describes the workflow; IBM’s April 2015 presentation places KL-Remote among threats that could defeat conventional authentication protections in the reported scenario.
How did KL-Remote steal banking credentials?
SecurityWeek reported that KL-Remote monitored an infected user’s online activity for visits to targeted financial institutions. When a target site was opened, the operator received an alert and information about the victim’s device. The toolkit’s interface showed the victim’s desktop and typing and allowed remote mouse and keyboard control.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Detect a banking session: the malware watched for visits to targeted institutions and alerted the operator.
- Display a tailored prompt: the operator could place a bank-themed prompt over an image of the banking page. It asked for account credentials and could also request a one-time password.
- Keep the customer waiting: after the details were entered, the customer saw a waiting message while the operator used the computer to access the account.
The report characterized the process as requiring manual intervention. This was not simply an automated fake page harvesting passwords: the operator could act through the victim’s computer during the session.
Could KL-Remote bypass two-factor authentication?
IBM’s April 2015 X-Force presentation listed username and password, two-factor authentication, and device identification among traditional protections KL-Remote could bypass. The reported method helps explain why: a prompt could solicit a one-time password, and an operator with control of the infected endpoint could continue interacting with the bank session.

This is evidence about the toolkit and scenario described in 2015, not proof that every current multi-factor authentication (MFA) method is ineffective. Authentication may establish that valid credentials or a factor were supplied, but a trusted device or successful login alone cannot show that the account holder knowingly initiated each action when an attacker controls the endpoint.
Where was KL-Remote reported, and when?
SecurityWeek reported observed use in Brazil and said the phishing prompts were written in Portuguese. The article said researchers believed the toolkit could be adapted for other countries; that was a possibility, not documentation of deployment elsewhere. The report appeared January 14, 2015, and IBM’s presentation is dated April 2015. Neither source establishes current KL-Remote activity or present-day prevalence.

How can banks detect online banking fraud?
The contemporary SecurityWeek report identified several clues banks and service operators could consider. These are signals to investigate, not guarantees that any single control will prevent fraud.
- Endpoint evidence: signs of malware on a customer’s device.
- Browsing behavior: unusual patterns during an online-banking session.
- Remote access: use of remote-access tools to log in.
- Transaction behavior: unusual transactions that warrant review.
These clues operate at different points in the process: endpoint monitoring looks for infection, session analysis looks for atypical behavior, and transaction monitoring looks at what the account does. The source does not provide comparative effectiveness measurements or quantify the added friction these approaches may create for legitimate customers.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What does the case teach about prevention?
The contemporary report described preventing malware infection at the endpoint as a client-side mitigation. For banks, its detection clues point toward layered monitoring rather than relying on a successful login or a recognized device as proof of the customer’s intent.
IBM’s April 2015 presentation also gave broader security guidance: keep threat intelligence current, maintain an accurate asset inventory, patch infrastructure, implement mitigating controls, instrument environments for detection, and practice incident response. These are general recommendations made in that historical presentation, not an endorsement of a particular current product.

What the sources do—and do not—establish
The sources describe a real historical case and its reported mechanics, but they do not establish current activity, present-day prevalence, or a current loss estimate for remote-overlay fraud or KL-Remote infections. SecurityWeek also cited a figure of $264 million in Brazilian internet-banking fraud for 2013, attributed broadly to “studies”; its report did not identify the original study or publisher. That figure is therefore not a verified, attributable measure to use as a current statistic.
“Toolkits such as KL-Remote — which package a preconfigured fraud flow in a user-friendly GUI — greatly expand the pool of people who can commit banking fraud.”
— Ori Bach, then a senior product marketing manager at Trusteer, as quoted by SecurityWeek in 2015. Bach continued: “With the toolkit, a criminal with basic technical skills can perform high-end fraud attacks that can circumvent strong authentication.”
