For buffering, start with Settings > Network > Network Status. This built-in check can help identify whether the problem is the Fire TV’s connection to your router or the router’s connection to the internet, then offer recommendations. If the problem is an app error or unexpectedly low picture quality, use the separate app and display checks below: no single Fire TV setting fixes every kind of playback issue.
Start with Network Status when videos buffer
Open Settings > Network > Network Status. Amazon says the tool checks both the link between Fire TV and the router and the link from the router to the internet. Follow any on-screen recommendations. Some compatible Fire TV devices also offer a speed test and advanced connection details; those options are not available on every model. Amazon explains the Network Status tool.
This distinction helps narrow the next step. If Fire TV has trouble reaching the router, focus on Wi-Fi connection and placement. If the device-to-router link is working but the internet-side link is not, restarting the home network or checking for a broader service issue is more relevant than changing a Fire TV display setting.
Refresh Wi-Fi and improve the connection
Reconnect the Fire TV
For an unstable or failed Wi-Fi connection, Amazon’s troubleshooting sequence includes unplugging Fire TV from power for 10 seconds, reconnecting it, and switching Wi-Fi off and on. If that does not help, forget the Wi-Fi network and reconnect through Settings > Network. Menu labels can vary by model.

Restart the router and check placement
Restart the modem and router, then consider whether the Fire TV and router can be moved closer together. If several devices in the home are losing connectivity at the same time, investigate the network or internet service rather than assuming the Fire TV is the cause. These steps are included in Amazon’s Fire TV Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.
Choose Wi-Fi bands based on your equipment
Amazon says using the same network name (SSID) for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz lets Fire TV connect automatically to the band it determines performs best based on signal strength. The 6 GHz option applies only to Fire TV devices that support Wi-Fi 6E. Amazon suggests considering a Wi-Fi 6E-or-newer router for those devices and mesh Wi-Fi for larger homes. These are conditional options, not guaranteed upgrades; check your Fire TV’s compatibility and whether coverage is actually the problem before buying equipment.

Fix an app-specific error separately
If only one app fails or playback errors occur in that app, check for Fire TV software updates and restart the device. Depending on the model, updates are under Settings > My Fire TV or Settings > Device & Software. You can also clear the affected app’s cache or data under Settings > Applications. Clearing data may reset app information, so use it deliberately. Amazon includes these steps in its help for Prime Video streaming problems; they are app troubleshooting steps, not a general way to increase network speed.
Check the video path when resolution is low
If a film or show plays at a lower resolution than expected, the cause may be the streaming plan or content, available bandwidth, the TV input, or a device in the HDMI chain—not a Wi-Fi setting alone.

Use diagnostics and verify the TV input
Where available, open Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio/Video Diagnostics. Amazon says this can identify the maximum resolution and refresh rate, along with HDR or Dolby Vision formats supported by connected HDMI equipment. Check that your plan and the specific content support 4K, and that the TV input is configured for the format you want. Tool availability and menu paths vary by device. Check cables, receivers, and format compatibility
Amazon recommends trying a high-speed HDMI cable and, when Wi-Fi may be the bottleneck, moving closer to the router or testing a wired Ethernet connection. Confirm compatibility before buying an Ethernet adapter for a particular Fire TV model.

The whole HDMI path matters if Fire TV connects through a receiver or soundbar: the relevant port needs to support HDCP 2.2 and 4K pass-through. Amazon also notes that some TV configurations supporting 4K at 30 Hz with Dolby Vision may lead Fire TV to stream at 1080p at 60 Hz for smoother playback. If the TV and connected equipment support it, settings may allow 4K at 60 Hz. Check the specific device and TV capabilities rather than assuming that selecting a higher resolution will always improve playback.
