Use Sharp to orient, resize, and re-encode an uploaded image before storing or serving it. Treat metadata removal as a privacy measure, not an upload security check: validate and limit the incoming file first, and verify what the selected Sharp version writes to its output.
What this workflow does—and does not do
Image processing can produce a derivative with dimensions suited to your application and reduce the risk of carrying unwanted metadata into that derivative. Sharp is a Node.js image-processing package distributed through npm. Its current package listing gives Node.js 20.9 or newer as the compatibility baseline; check the package version you choose for its supported runtime requirements: Sharp on npm.
Resizing and re-encoding do not establish that an upload is benign, and they do not protect the upload endpoint by themselves. Build validation, authorization, size limits, and safe storage into the surrounding upload flow.
Validate the upload before processing
Accept only the image types your application needs. A submitted Content-Type header is not proof of the file’s actual type: OWASP advises, “Validate the file type, don’t trust the Content-Type header as it can be spoofed.” See the OWASP File Upload Cheat Sheet.

- Set request and file-size limits before image processing begins.
- Validate file content rather than relying on the supplied MIME type or filename extension.
- Restrict uploads to authorized users and generate server-side filenames.
- Choose image dimension and pixel limits that fit your service’s capacity; there is no universal safe value for every application.
- Store uploads outside the webroot or in separate storage where feasible, with access rules appropriate to the application.
Request parsing, accepted formats, and storage APIs vary by framework and deployment. The transform below therefore accepts a byte buffer from an already-bounded upload parser rather than defining a universal upload endpoint.
Resize and re-encode with Sharp
Install Sharp with npm, then adapt this function to your parser and controlled storage destination. It auto-orients the image before resizing, selects an explicit output format, and returns the resulting bytes for the application to store.

The dimensions and JPEG quality here are example application choices, not universal recommendations. Set them according to the derivative’s purpose, accepted formats, and storage or delivery requirements. Choose a resize fit for the output
Width and height alone do not determine what users see. Sharp’s fit mode controls how the source image maps to the requested box: Sharp resize options.

In the example, inside preserves the whole image while keeping it within 1200 by 800 pixels. If you need a full-bleed card image instead, cover fills that box by sacrificing some source area.
Handle EXIF orientation and metadata deliberately
Camera images can include an EXIF orientation value that tells viewers how to display the pixels. Sharp’s metadata() reads header information, but its reported width and height do not account for EXIF orientation. Do not treat those raw dimensions as guaranteed display dimensions. Sharp documents the metadata interface at its input API and uses autoOrient() in its project examples.

Applying orientation-aware processing before resizing helps the derivative follow the image’s intended display orientation. The example then encodes a fresh JPEG output. However, do not assume that “re-encoded” means every metadata block has been removed in every Sharp version, format, or output configuration. The cited Sharp pages establish the input metadata interface and demonstrate transforms, but do not spell out a guarantee covering all output metadata. Verify the behavior of the exact version and operation you deploy before promising that EXIF—or IPTC, XMP, comments, or embedded profiles—has been stripped.

- Pin or otherwise control the Sharp version used by the application, and review that version’s output API documentation for metadata behavior.
- Run the transform on representative uploads, including images with orientation metadata and any metadata your privacy policy intends to remove.
- Inspect the produced files with a metadata-reading tool or library in automated tests. Assert the properties your application requires rather than assuming a format conversion removed them.
- Test each output format and configuration you support; behavior verified for one should not be generalized to another.
- Store and serve only the derivative intended for users. Keep originals only when the application has a defined need and appropriate access controls.
These tests establish the behavior of your implementation and package version; they do not replace the input validation and storage safeguards around it.
