The names alone do not guarantee a specific result: behavior varies by TV model and signal.
What Game Mode and PC mode do
Game Mode: prioritize responsiveness
Game Mode changes the TV’s handling of a signal to reduce delay between an input and what appears on screen. A Hisense e-manual describes its Game Mode as reducing input lag so presses or clicks better match what happens on screen. LG describes Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) as reducing delay between a game console’s input and the TV’s output. Neither description supplies a universal latency figure or a comparison across brands.
Some TVs also make game-related features available in this state, or limit certain picture adjustments. For example, LG notes that some settings cannot be changed in Game Optimizer and that supported options depend on the model. Check your TV’s manual for the exact trade-offs.
PC mode: configure a computer input
PC mode is not a universal TV standard. Depending on the model and generation, it may mean labeling an HDMI input as a PC, choosing an input format, or using PC-specific picture and screen settings. LG’s support instructions for products released in 2018 or earlier, for example, describe changing an HDMI input’s icon to PC; an older LG manual describes separate screen setup and adjustments for a PC connection. These examples explain why PC mode can matter, but they do not establish how every current TV implements it.

A PC configuration may affect how the TV treats computer graphics, including fine text. It does not by itself guarantee sharper text, full chroma, or lower gaming delay on every model.
Should you use Game Mode or PC mode with a computer?
Choose based on what you are doing, and check the options your TV actually provides. For PC gaming, prioritize low latency with Game Mode or ALLM if available. For desktop work, follow the TV maker’s PC-input guidance and judge the result by the clarity of text and graphics. Some TVs allow a PC input configuration and game features at the same time, so do not assume you must choose one or the other.

How to set up a PC connected to a TV
- Choose the right HDMI port. Check the TV manual and the PC’s graphics output for support at your intended resolution and refresh rate. Ports on the same TV may not have identical capabilities.
- Apply PC-input guidance if the TV provides it. Look in the TV’s input or source settings, or consult its manual. Do not assume another brand’s menu path or an older model’s instructions apply.
- For gaming, enable Game Mode or ALLM. Use the TV’s game or low-latency setting if responsive controls matter. Confirm whether enabling it changes picture adjustments you want to use. Samsung’s Canada guidance says Game Mode does not automatically turn on for a connected PC and must be enabled from Quick Settings; Samsung India also tells PC users to enable it manually. Console detection and menu behavior vary by model and region.
- Set a supported resolution and refresh rate on the PC. Match the PC output to the TV and the specific HDMI port. If the target is 4K at 120 Hz or another high-refresh format, verify the TV port, graphics output, and cable against that exact configuration. Samsung Canada recommends an HDMI 2.1 cable in its 4K-at-120-Hz setup guidance and notes that qualifying ports vary by model; a cable cannot add a capability missing from either device.
- For desktop use, inspect text and colored edges. Check small text at your normal viewing distance. If it looks soft or colored outlines appear blurred, consult the TV’s guidance for PC input and check the PC’s output format and scaling. A chroma test pattern can help assess fine color detail; do not infer that 4:4:4 is active from a mode name alone.
Why text and chroma can look different
Computer graphics often include fine, sharply defined colored details. Chroma 4:4:4 preserves full color detail at that level, which is especially relevant to small colored text and graphics. The effect depends on the complete signal path: the PC’s output settings, the TV’s handling of that format in the selected mode, and the resolution and refresh rate in use.
A Hisense manual says its Game Mode processes YUV 4:4:4 signals precisely. That is guidance for the cited Hisense model, not evidence that every TV preserves 4:4:4 in Game Mode or that every PC mode enables it. Check the manual for your exact model and verify the result on screen.

What to check before troubleshooting
- Controls feel delayed: Confirm Game Mode or ALLM is active and supported for the connected PC input. A TV’s automatic switching behavior for consoles may not apply to PCs.
- Text looks fuzzy: Check the TV’s PC-input instructions, PC scaling, and output format. Compare small text and colored edges rather than relying on the input label.
- High refresh rate is unavailable: Verify the chosen HDMI port, TV model, graphics output, resolution, refresh rate, and cable together. A high-bandwidth cable cannot make an unsupported port or device provide a higher mode.
- Picture controls are missing: Check whether Game Mode or the TV’s Game Optimizer limits those adjustments on your model.
Manufacturer guidance and model limits
Menu names, automatic switching, supported formats, and PC-mode behavior differ by model, firmware, and region. Samsung’s Canada support page says its guidance applies to TVs sold in Canada and that settings can differ elsewhere. Its cited PC and high-refresh instructions are examples for supported Samsung configurations, not universal rules for other TVs.
For model-specific steps, use the manufacturer’s current manual and support pages: Samsung Canada: Game Mode on a Samsung TV; Samsung Canada: HDMI 2.1 on a Samsung TV; Samsung India: Game Mode on a Samsung TV; LG USA: Auto Low Latency Mode; LG USA: Designating an input as PC.
