You can make music with a microcontroller in several ways: build a small sound machine, turn physical controls into a keyboard, send MIDI commands to another instrument or software, sequence and route MIDI, or play music files from storage. The project decides what parts and board you need; a microcontroller board by itself is not a finished synthesizer or a guarantee of high-quality audio.
What kind of music project do you want to make?
Start with the result you want, then choose the inputs, outputs, and software to match. These examples are documented projects and capabilities, not a controlled comparison of sound quality or ease of use.
| Project goal | What it does | Example and considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Make a simple sound machine | Reads buttons, switches, or dials and triggers sounds through the project’s chosen sound hardware. | Raspberry Pi’s beginner Pico pathway introduces buttons, switches, potentiometers, and buzzers. Raspberry Pi Pico beginner pathway. |
| Build a keyboard-like experiment | Uses physical keys as inputs to a music program. | Raspberry Pi’s Pico piano uses resistors and analog input to read keys; the article describes MicroPython and CircuitPython versions, with MIDI functionality on the CircuitPython version. Pico piano project. |
| Control another instrument or music software | Sends MIDI control from physical buttons and other interface elements. | Adafruit’s documented CircuitPython design uses a Pico, 16 arcade buttons with built-in LEDs, an OLED, a joystick, and a 3D-printed case. Adafruit Pico MIDI controller guide. |
| Sequence or route musical events | Organizes patterns and routes MIDI; the project also describes USB MIDI and CV features. | Stepchild is an open-source Pico project. Check its own documentation for current support and compatibility. Stepchild project. |
| Play music files | Reads stored music files from an SD card. | Arduino describes the MKR Zero’s SD-card holder and dedicated SPI interface as supporting music-file playback without extra hardware. Arduino MKR Zero documentation. |
How do you choose a board and parts?
Choose around the project’s actual connections. A handful of keys may need analog input and simple wiring; a controller with many buttons, lights, and a screen needs more input/output capacity and may benefit from an expander. A file player has different storage and playback requirements from a MIDI controller.
What Pico 2 offers
Raspberry Pi’s Pico 2 documentation lists the RP2350-based board with 520 kB SRAM, 4 MB onboard flash, 26 multifunction GPIO pins, three 12-bit ADCs, and 16 PWM channels. It also lists USB 1.1 host/device support, two UART, two SPI, and two I2C interfaces. Those interfaces provide options for reading controls and communicating with other devices; they do not, by themselves, define a complete audio-output design. See the Pico-series documentation.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which Pico 2 variant?
Pico 2 W variants add Wi-Fi and Bluetooth; versions with headers have pins presoldered. Wireless connectivity is useful when the project actually needs it, while presoldered headers can simplify compatible wiring and prototyping. Check the exact model and current details in Raspberry Pi’s Pico-series documentation before buying.
Match the parts to a specific build
- For the Pico piano: the project names a Pico, resistors, copper-plated boards, and an analog input.
- For Adafruit’s MIDI controller: its parts list includes a Pico, GPIO expander/LED driver, OLED, five-way navigation switch, and LED arcade buttons; the guide specifies 16 arcade buttons with built-in LEDs.
- For other projects: follow the selected build’s component list and verify exact compatibility. A kit that suits one tutorial may not include what another needs.
The project guides establish their designs and listed components; they are not independent performance tests.

Which programming route fits?
The cited projects use MicroPython, CircuitPython, and C++. Raspberry Pi’s microcontroller overview frames MicroPython as a simpler scripting route for rapid development and C/C++ as an option for performance-focused work and hardware control. The Pico piano has MicroPython and CircuitPython versions, and Stepchild documents a C++ extension route for user-created instruments and effects. These are examples, not a complete survey of music software for microcontrollers. Consult the chosen project’s guide for its supported language and setup.
Raspberry Pi’s Pico documentation describes programming options and getting started with its boards.

A practical way to get started
- Define the musical outcome. Decide whether you want sound from the project itself, a physical keyboard experiment, a MIDI controller, a sequencer, or file playback.
- List the interactions. Count the keys, buttons, dials, sensors, displays, and external connections your design needs. Decide whether it must communicate with a computer, an instrument, or storage.
- Pick a documented path and its board. For a beginner control-and-sound experiment, Raspberry Pi’s Pico pathway is a starting point. For the piano, MIDI controller, sequencing, or file playback, use the project-specific sources above rather than assuming one design transfers directly to another.
- Gather the listed parts and plan assembly. Check whether your build calls for a breadboard, soldering, fabrication, or an enclosure. Confirm the exact components, headers, and connections against the guide before purchasing.
- Follow the project’s programming instructions. Use the language and setup it documents; then expand the instrument one input or feature at a time.
How the examples differ
Arduino’s official MKR Zero page calls it “a development board for music makers!” and specifically describes SD-card playback. That use-case positioning does not establish that it is universally better than a Pico. Pico examples demonstrate accessible control, keyboard, and MIDI projects; Stepchild illustrates a more elaborate sequencing and routing direction. Choose by the required interfaces, storage, controls, software, and assembly—not by treating these different builds as interchangeable.
