In Make:cast’s April 24, 2025 conversation, host Dale Dougherty talks with composer, sound designer, educator, and electronic instrument maker Kirk Pearson, alongside his book editor Kevin Toyama, about learning through sound experiments and building custom instruments. The episode is a useful introduction; Pearson’s book, Electronic Music from Scratch, offers a broader companion for readers who want to explore further.
What the Make:cast conversation covers
Dougherty’s episode summary traces Pearson’s move from a traditional music background toward electronic music and instrument building. Rather than presenting a gear-buying checklist, the conversation connects musical experimentation with hands-on electronics: Make identifies circuit bending, synthesizer design, capacitors, and potentiometers among its topics. These are discussed as part of Pearson’s maker practice, not as a complete build tutorial.
The interview also touches on the difficulty of translating workshop experiences into a book. Pearson’s teaching gives him a practical setting for exploring how people approach building synthesizers and other electronic instruments. Make describes Dogbotic, Pearson’s creative audio studio, as also serving research and education, with workshops on niche artistic subjects. Pearson’s own biography says he has taught “thousands of students from fifty countries” to build synthesizers from scratch; that is his self-reported account, not an independently verified or dated participation statistic.
Make’s summary also mentions a new album and the show Radio Pacific. Because the episode page does not establish their present status, treat them as projects mentioned in the 2025 conversation rather than assume they are current.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to continue exploring electronic music from scratch
Use the book for self-paced learning
Electronic Music from Scratch is Pearson’s beginner guide to homegrown electronic instruments. It is the most natural next step if you want a fuller learning reference after hearing the episode. Pearson’s official site identifies him as the author, while Make links the book from its episode coverage. The episode summary does not provide a chapter-by-chapter outline or specific build instructions, so consult the book itself for its projects and guidance.
Try a physical synthesizer build
Make specifically points readers to the Boxytone Synth Kit as a related hands-on project. The episode page establishes its relevance, but does not state current price, kit contents, specifications, or availability. Check the linked listing before choosing it, and do not assume it includes particular parts or instructions based on the episode alone.

Look for guided workshops
If you learn better by making alongside an instructor and other participants, Dogbotic workshops are another possibility. Make describes workshops in electronic instruments and niche artistic topics, while Pearson characterizes Dogbotic as a creative audio studio with research and education activity. The sources do not establish current schedules, location, cost, or enrollment; check Dogbotic’s site for current details before planning around a session.
Choosing a next step
| Option | Best fit | What the sources establish | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Electronic Music from Scratch | Self-paced exploration and a broader learning reference | Pearson is the author; Make presents it as a beginner guide to homegrown electronic instruments. | Current edition, retailer availability, price, and the specific projects in the book. |
| Boxytone Synth Kit | A physical synth-building project | Make names and links to it as a related kit. | Current availability, price, contents, specifications, and instructions. |

What the episode does—and does not—teach
The conversation provides context for Pearson’s approach: combine musical curiosity with making, and explore how electronic components can become part of an instrument. It is not a substitute for construction instructions. Make’s episode summary does not provide circuit diagrams, component values, or safety guidance, so use a suitable project guide and follow its precautions before building or modifying electronics.
