An Android keyboard can handle text entered in the field you are using, so enabling one gives it a sensitive role. That does not, by itself, prove that the keyboard records or uploads everything you type. To assess privacy, check the app’s disclosures and privacy policy, then review its optional online features and settings. Android’s permission list alone does not explain all of an input method’s text handling.

What enabling an Android keyboard means

An Android keyboard is an input method editor (IME): an app with a service that provides text entry and passes input to the field currently in focus. Android lets you choose an installed IME in system settings, and only one IME can be enabled at a time. The selected keyboard can be used across the system, rather than only inside the app from which you installed it. Android’s IME guide describes the platform role and service architecture.

Because handling text is the keyboard’s core function, treat an enabled keyboard as having a sensitive capability. That is different from evidence that a particular developer stores or transmits everything entered. A keyboard’s ordinary Android permission list is not a complete account of how its IME handles text.

What the Android keyboard warning does—and does not—tell you

Android may show a warning about a third-party keyboard’s potential access to typed text when you enable it. Microsoft says this warning appears when any third-party keyboard is enabled. It is a warning about the role of an alternate keyboard, not an app-specific finding that the named keyboard is malicious or uploads every keystroke. Check the particular app’s disclosures and controls rather than treating the generic warning as a verdict. Microsoft’s SwiftKey explanation discusses the warning.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What to check before installing a keyboard

  1. Confirm the app and developer. Make sure the Play listing is for the keyboard you intend to install, and inspect its current Data safety section and the developer’s privacy policy. Google says developers are responsible for the declarations they provide, including applicable behavior from third-party SDKs and libraries. Use those disclosures as the developer’s account, not as independent verification of runtime behavior. Google Play’s Data safety guidance explains what the section is designed to report.
  2. Look at the data categories and purposes. Check whether the developer describes collecting or sharing text, search queries, voice, identifiers, usage statistics, or learned words, and why those data are used. Note whether information is shared with the developer or other parties, and whether the policy and listing appear consistent.
  3. Review optional networked features. Look for voice typing, search integrations, cloud backup or sync, personalization, and data or audio donation for model improvement. Find out which features are optional, what they send, and how to turn them off or delete associated data. These feature-level details can matter more than a broad statement about the keyboard.
  4. Check password-field handling. Read the maker’s explanation of how the keyboard treats password and other sensitive fields. Do not assume every app or website labels a password field correctly, or that a control to show a password leaves the field classified as a password field.
  5. Inspect sensitive permissions. If the keyboard offers voice typing, check whether it requests microphone access and whether you can deny or revoke it without using that feature. Android’s Permission Manager and Privacy Dashboard can help review permissions such as microphone, camera, and location; they do not replace checking how the keyboard handles text. Android’s permission guidance describes these controls.
  6. Recheck after significant updates. App features, disclosures, and privacy controls can change. Revisit the listing, policy, and settings when a major update changes what the keyboard offers.

Why a permission screen cannot answer every privacy question

Permissions describe access to protected device resources, such as the microphone. An IME’s text-entry role, however, is part of how the input method works; the ordinary permission list does not tell you by itself whether optional features send information online, what information they send, or how long it is retained.

Clipboard access is a separate, version-specific example. Android 10 documentation says an app generally cannot access clipboard data unless it is the default IME or currently has focus. That rule concerns clipboard access in Android 10; it should not be generalized to every Android release or treated as a complete description of keyboard text handling. Android 10 privacy changes gives the platform context.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Vendor disclosures illustrate why features matter

Product documentation can distinguish everyday typing from specific online features. The statements below describe what Google and Microsoft say about their own products; they are not independent runtime tests. Check the current documentation and settings for the version you use.

Gboard

Google says Gboard sends searches to Google to return search results and sends voice used for talk-to-text for transcription. Google also says other typed text, such as passwords or chats, and saved words are not sent to Google, and documents controls for deleting saved words. Its separate explanation of federated learning says the feature sends what the model learns, rather than the spoken or typed text itself; Google also describes optional audio-snippet donation. These distinctions make it important to check which features are enabled, not just whether the keyboard is installed. See Google’s pages on Gboard troubleshooting and privacy and how Gboard gets better.

Microsoft SwiftKey

Microsoft says SwiftKey keeps personal and language data stored locally unless the user opts into a SwiftKey Account; some data may be shared for selected cloud services such as Backup & Sync. Microsoft also says SwiftKey does not learn from fields marked as password fields, but notes that the app or website must mark the field correctly and that showing a password can affect its classification. Those conditions mean password protection should not be assumed for every field. Read SwiftKey’s privacy and password-field explanation alongside the current app settings.
