Python strings are immutable, so you cannot add characters to an existing string in place. To extend a string, create a new one and assign it back: text += extra works well for a small addition. For many pieces, collect them and combine them with ''.join(parts), or write them to io.StringIO.

Append a small amount of text with +=

Use concatenation when you have one or a few additions. The assignment makes the variable refer to the resulting string; it does not modify the original string object.

text = "Hello"
text += "!"
print(text)  # Hello!

You can also write text = text + extra. Both forms concatenate the strings and assign the result to text.

Use an f-string to add variable values

When you are building a message from fixed text and variable values, an f-string is often clearer than concatenating each part separately:

The expression inside the braces is evaluated and included in the new string. Formatted string literals have been available since Python 3.6. See the Python built-in types documentation.

Build a string from many fragments

If pieces are generated repeatedly, store them in a list and call join() once. The string before .join() is the separator inserted between the items:

parts = ["Hello", "world", "!"]
text = " ".join(parts)
print(text)  # Hello world !

Use an empty string as the separator when you want no characters inserted between pieces:

parts = ["Hello", ", ", "world", "!"]
text = "".join(parts)
print(text)  # Hello, world!

The pieces supplied to join() need to be strings. If you have non-string values, convert them before joining—for example, with str(value).

Write fragments incrementally with io.StringIO

For code that produces text a piece at a time, StringIO provides a file-like object you can write to, then retrieve as one string with getvalue():

from io import StringIO

buffer = StringIO()
buffer.write("Hello")
buffer.write(", world!")
text = buffer.getvalue()

The Python documentation recommends join() or StringIO for efficiently constructing strings from multiple fragments. See the built-in types documentation and its Python 3.14.7 guidance on sequence concatenation.

Insert or replace characters at a position

Strings have no in-place character assignment. To insert text at index i, combine the parts before and after that position with the addition:

text = "Hello world"
i = 5
text = text[:i] + "," + text[i:]
print(text)  # Hello, world

To replace the character at index i, build a new string from the prefix, replacement, and suffix:

text = "cat"
i = 0
text = text[:i] + "b" + text[i + 1:]
print(text)  # bat

These slicing patterns construct new strings; they do not mutate the original value.

Why repeated concatenation can be inefficient

Concatenating immutable sequences creates a new object. The Python documentation warns that repeatedly building a string through concatenation can take quadratic time in the total length of the result. For repeated assembly, collecting fragments and joining them once—or writing them to StringIO—avoids that pattern and has linear total runtime according to the documentation. This is a reason to choose a fragment-building approach in a loop, not a reason to avoid + or += for a couple of known pieces.

Why string.append() does not work

Python strings do not have an append() method. Lists do, but strings are immutable. For a short addition, concatenate and assign the result; for repeated construction, collect pieces in a list and join them, or use StringIO.
