To find a problematic Android app, match the phone’s symptom to the right diagnostic: check Battery usage for unusual drain, Privacy dashboard for recent permission access, and Safe mode to test whether downloaded apps are contributing to a broader problem. These checks narrow the cause; none alone proves an app is harmful or identifies it with certainty.

Start by recording what the phone is doing

Before changing settings or uninstalling anything, note the exact symptom, when it began, how often it happens, and what you were doing when it occurred. Record recent app installations and updates, too. For intermittent crashes or freezes, keeping observations—and a list of apps you force-stop while troubleshooting—can reveal a pattern more reliably than removing several apps at once. Google’s Android troubleshooting guide recommends keeping track of force-stopped apps.

Look for timing that connects the symptom with an app install, update, permission access, or burst of battery use. A single high usage figure or permission entry is a clue to investigate, not proof of fault.

Choose the check that matches the symptom

Diagnostic Useful for What it can tell you—and what it cannot
Battery usage by app Unexpected battery drain Shows reported battery use over a selected period. A high figure is a lead, not proof the app is faulty; usage depends on what it was doing.
Privacy dashboard Unexpected camera, microphone, location, or other permission access Shows which apps accessed a selected permission and when, subject to the history available on that Android version. Access may be appropriate for the app’s function.
Permission manager Reviewing which apps have particular permissions Shows or lets you change permission grants. A grant alone does not show that an app used it improperly.
Safe mode Freezes, crashes, or other broad problems that may involve downloaded apps Temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the issue stops, a downloaded app is likely involved, but Safe mode does not identify which one.
Security & privacy or Play Protect Checking for security warnings Provides device security information and any warnings shown. No alert is not a guarantee that every app is safe.

If the battery is draining quickly

On Pixel phones, open Settings > Battery > Battery usage > View by apps. Select an app to review or change its background battery use. The exact page, controls, and level of detail vary by manufacturer and software version; other Android phones may use different menus. Google’s Pixel battery usage guidance documents this route.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Judge the app against the period shown and what you used it for. Navigation, video, calls, and other sustained activity can account for battery use without indicating a problem. Do not force-stop or uninstall a system component based only on its position in the list. Google says Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled on Pixel phones because it is integrated with Android.

If you are checking camera, microphone, or location access

Open Privacy dashboard, choose the permission you are concerned about, and review which apps accessed it and when. Google documents a seven-day history on Android 13 and a 24-hour history on Android 12; those time windows are tied to those versions and should not be assumed on every device or release. See Google’s Privacy dashboard instructions.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

To inspect or change an app’s grants, Google’s general route is Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions. You can also use Permission manager to review apps by permission category. Menu names and locations vary. For supported camera, microphone, and location permissions, available choices may include “Allow only while using the app,” “Ask every time,” and “Don’t allow.” Denying access can disable a feature you expect the app to provide. Google explains the options in its Android app permissions guide.

Compare access with the app’s purpose and the time the symptom occurs. If an app requests a sensitive permission that seems unrelated to its function, pause before granting it and verify the app’s developer and purpose.

If the concern is security

Check the phone’s Security & privacy page and review any Play Protect warning. The layout differs across Android versions and devices; Google describes the available security information in its Android security settings guide. An alert deserves attention, but the absence of one does not establish that every installed app is safe.

Use Safe mode to test whether downloaded apps are involved

Safe mode is an isolation test, not an app scanner. Google says it “temporarily turns off all downloaded apps.” If a problem stops in Safe mode, “an app is likely causing your problem.” That points toward downloaded apps without naming the culprit.

  1. Find the Safe mode instructions for your phone. The restart method varies by manufacturer and model. Google’s Safe mode guide directs users to the device manufacturer for the exact steps.
  2. Use the phone in Safe mode and check for the same symptom. Try to reproduce the problem in a way that is safe and practical—for example, use the phone normally for a while if the issue is intermittent.
  3. If the problem goes away, restart into normal mode. Remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, restarting and checking whether the symptom returns after each removal. This takes longer than deleting several apps at once, but preserves a clearer link between a change and the result.
  4. Stop removing apps if the symptom persists in Safe mode. Google’s guidance is to continue with other troubleshooting rather than proceeding with the app-removal sequence. Persistence redirects the investigation; it does not establish a single alternative cause.

Check phone-wide causes before blaming an app

Low storage, system updates, accessories, and other device-level issues can also contribute to trouble. Google says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as a general troubleshooting clue—not a universal threshold and not evidence against any particular app. Check available storage and free space if needed; Google’s Android restart and crash troubleshooting guide covers storage and other checks.

If the problem remains in Safe mode, follow the rest of the device-specific troubleshooting guidance, check for system updates, and consider whether a connected accessory or the phone itself is involved. Contact the manufacturer’s support if the issue continues or Safe mode instructions are unclear. Do not keep uninstalling downloaded apps when the symptom persists with them disabled.

Make changes one at a time and preserve your data

  • Start with reversible checks: review usage, inspect permissions, and update an app where appropriate.
  • When testing a permission, change one app’s grant at a time and check whether the expected feature still works.
  • Avoid disabling core system services or deleting system data based on a battery chart. Google Play services, for example, is integrated with Android on Pixel phones.
  • Reserve a factory reset for a last resort. It removes data and installed apps; back up important data first, following Google’s Android reset guidance.

Android Developers defines excessive background mobile network usage for Android vitals as 50 MB combined sent and received per day in the background. That figure is a developer-reporting definition, not a consumer cutoff for deciding that an app is problematic; see Android vitals guidance.
