If Microsoft Edge repeatedly asks for your work-account sign-in, first find the matching Microsoft Entra sign-in event and check its Conditional Access result. The event can show whether access failed because the device was not compliant, did not meet a join requirement, or was blocked by a specific policy. Use that evidence to decide whether to correct Conditional Access, Intune compliance, Edge work-profile enrollment, Windows account integration, or—only for an embedded sign-in window—WebView2 networking.
Start with the failed sign-in event
Do not assume every repeated prompt has the same cause. In the Microsoft Entra admin center, open Monitoring & health > Sign-in logs and locate the attempt using the user, resource or site, date and time, and correlation ID if available. Open the event’s Conditional Access results and troubleshooting details to see which policy interrupted access and what device assessment Entra received. Microsoft documents this as the starting point for diagnosing Conditional Access failures: Troubleshooting sign-in problems with Conditional Access.
Record the exact time, user, requested resource, device, platform, visible message and error code, and whether the prompt appears in regular Edge or inside another application’s sign-in window. If you need Microsoft support, include the request ID and the event’s date and time.
Read the error code in context
Microsoft lists these Conditional Access-related sign-in codes: 53000 means the device is not compliant; 53001 means it does not meet a domain-join requirement; and 53003 means access was blocked by Conditional Access. Other relevant identifiers include 53002 (the application is not approved), 53004 (proof-up blocked due to risk), and 53009 (the application needs to enforce Intune protection policies). These codes identify different conditions; check the event’s policy and troubleshooting details rather than treating them as interchangeable. Fix the policy or device condition named in Entra
If the event points to device compliance, verify that the relevant device is enrolled and managed in Intune, that a compliance policy is assigned to the intended user or device, and that Intune’s current device status satisfies the policy. Confirm the user is properly targeted and has the required Intune license. If enrollment, compliance settings, or assignments have just changed, allow evaluation and reporting to finish before testing again. Microsoft outlines this relationship in its Intune Conditional Access troubleshooting guidance.
If the event names a join requirement or another grant control, check that specific requirement against the device’s actual state. Correct the faulty assignment, exclusion, or unmet condition rather than broadly weakening access controls. Broad policies that require compliant or hybrid-joined devices can block users who do not meet the requirement—including administrators attempting to repair the policy. Keep emergency access accounts excluded from broad Conditional Access enforcement so there is a recovery route, as advised in Microsoft’s guidance for requiring device compliance with Conditional Access.

Check Edge’s work identity and Intune app protection
When Conditional Access relies on Intune app protection (also called mobile application management or MAM), confirm Edge is signed in with the intended work account—not a personal or local-only profile—and that the user is included in the relevant app-protection and Conditional Access assignments. Confirm that MAM enrollment has completed. Microsoft notes that an existing, unregistered Edge account can interfere with proper enrollment; processing time or an expired or noncompliant MAM state can also lead to another prompt. After verifying the work identity, allow enrollment to process and retry in a new tab. If the prompt continues, have an Intune administrator check targeting and enrollment state. See Microsoft’s Edge for Business data-security troubleshooting guidance.
App-based Conditional Access can also require platform-specific companion-app setup. Microsoft’s Edge troubleshooting guidance identifies Microsoft Authenticator for app-based Conditional Access and Company Portal on Android for app-protection enforcement. Check the current requirements for the user’s platform and configured scenario before asking them to install, remove, or reset an app.

Check Windows and Edge sign-in settings when the browser itself is affected
If the failure occurs in regular Edge on Windows, inspect the browser’s applied policy at edge://policy. Find BrowserSignin: Microsoft documents 0 as disabled, 1 as enabled, and 2 as forced sign-in. If an organization policy sets an unsuitable value, an administrator should correct the policy rather than asking the user to override it.
- In Edge, open
edge://policyand check the effectiveBrowserSigninvalue. - Open
edge://settings/help, install any available browser update, and restart Edge. - In Windows, open Settings > Accounts > Access work or school and verify the expected organizational account is connected.
- If those checks do not explain the loop, investigate Windows account integration and Web Account Manager (WAM)/Token Broker state using Microsoft’s official Edge sign-in troubleshooting instructions. Follow account-reconnection or Token Broker procedures carefully and preserve user data; removing an Edge profile casually can delete unsynced favorites, history, and passwords.
For an administrator or support case, collect Edge and Windows versions, an exported policy view from edge://policy, the account type, an error screenshot, and a network trace from edge://net-export/. edge://identity-internals/ may also help administrators assess Edge account state. Microsoft’s sign-in troubleshooting page describes relevant diagnostics.

Investigate WebView2 only when the prompt is inside another app
A sign-in loop inside an application’s embedded authentication window is a different diagnostic branch from a loop in the normal Edge browser. If the app uses WebView2 and the context or diagnostics support a network cause, check proxy routing, TLS inspection, trust for any interception certificate, and access to required authentication and content-delivery endpoints for the WebView2 process. Microsoft describes these possible blockers in Prevent security tools from blocking WebView2 apps. Do not change proxy or certificate settings for an ordinary Edge sign-in loop without evidence that the embedded flow is involved.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
| What you observe | First place to investigate |
|---|---|
| Entra reports 53000 or a compliance failure | Intune enrollment, policy assignment, current compliance status, and user/device targeting. |
| Entra reports 53001 or a join requirement failure | The named Conditional Access grant requirement and the device’s actual join state. |
| Entra reports 53003 | The blocking policy’s assignments, conditions, and grant controls in the sign-in event. |
| Only a work-protected Edge profile repeatedly prompts | Correct work identity, app-protection targeting, MAM enrollment, and platform prerequisites. |
| Regular Edge on Windows loops without a clear policy failure | BrowserSignin, Edge version, connected Windows work account, and then WAM/Token Broker diagnostics. |
| The prompt is inside a separate app’s sign-in window | Confirm whether it uses WebView2, then investigate proxy, TLS inspection, certificate trust, and endpoint access. |
These are diagnostic routes, not mutually exclusive causes: use the Entra event first, then follow the branch supported by the policy result and where the prompt appears.
