littleBits is a modular electronics platform: color-coded components called Bits connect magnetically, letting beginners assemble and change circuits without soldering. To start, connect power to an input such as a button, then connect that input to an output such as a light, buzzer, or motor. A guided project from the official littleBits library can help you take that simple circuit into a working invention.
What is littleBits?
Each Bit performs a role in an electronic circuit, and its magnetic connectors make it easy to snap components together and rearrange them. Sphero describes littleBits as electronic building blocks for hands-on learning about circuitry and electronics (Sphero’s littleBits resources). The getting-started hub is designed for people new to STEAM and says no STEAM background is required (littleBits getting-started resources).
Because the components connect without soldering, a first build can focus on cause and effect: what happens when you press a button, change a sensor, or alter the order of the modules?
How to build a first littleBits circuit
- Identify the Bits. Use the Bitopedia and the guide for your kit to distinguish power, input, output, and connection or wire modules (Bitopedia and kit resources).
- Start with power. Place the power module at the beginning of the circuit.
- Add one input. Connect a button or switch after power. Inputs can also include sensors for light, temperature, motion, sound, or remote triggers.
- Finish with an output. Add a light, buzzer, motor, display, or another component that produces an effect. Check that the magnetic connections are seated, then activate the input and observe the result.
- Follow one guided activity. Choose a lesson or invention challenge for your kit from the official library, which includes lessons, unit plans, and educator guides (littleBits activity resources).
- Remix one thing at a time. Change a single input, module, or physical feature and test the result. Add cardboard, paper, tape, string, or recycled materials to turn the circuit into a physical invention. Workshop guidance also recommends testing with other people and documenting projects with photos or video (littleBits workshop activities).
What to learn after the first circuit
Once power, input, and output make sense, add components that shape when or how the circuit responds. The Bitopedia and kit guide are the references for identifying specific modules (littleBits Bitopedia).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Power: supplies energy to the circuit.
- Inputs: controls and sensors that trigger or influence what happens.
- Outputs: lights, sound, motors, displays, and other actuators that create an effect.
- Logic and timing: sequencers, pulse, timeout, and threshold modules can change the pattern or conditions of a response.
- Physical prototyping: everyday craft and recycled materials provide a structure for the electronics.
Which littleBits kit should you choose?
The right option depends on whether one person, a household, a class, or several maker teams will build at once. Sphero’s current catalog includes 82 littleBits products, spanning kits, individual Bits, class packs, storage, and training; that catalog count is not a count of beginner kits (Sphero littleBits catalog).
| Use case | Product path | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| Individual beginner | littleBits Invention Kit Single Kit | Range of Bits, project variety, and whether the included activities and support fit your plans (Sphero catalog). |
| Home learning | At-Home Learning Starter Kit | Guided activities, adult facilitation, and current availability; check the live listing before buying (Sphero catalog). |
| One classroom or small group | STEAM Student Set or STEAM+, including Code options | Number of learners, curriculum alignment, and how much coding the project requires. The STEAM Student Set page lists 17 Bits and eight curriculum resources, along with standards alignments, a teacher’s guide, an invention guide, a feedback chart, and an invention log (STEAM Student Set resources). |
| Many teams or a makerspace | Invention Class Pack or Makerspace Invention Wall | How many builders need to work simultaneously, storage needs, and procurement budget (Sphero catalog). |
| Robotics extension | RVR+ Topper Kit | Compatibility with Sphero RVR+ and whether the intended project needs robotics features (Sphero catalog). |
For a first individual project, the Invention Kit is the broad beginner route described in the current product guidance. At home, the At-Home Learning Starter Kit is another route to check. Schools can choose among student sets, STEAM+ or Code products, class packs, and makerspace options according to group size and curriculum needs.

Can children use littleBits without coding or electronics experience?
Yes. The magnetic modules let a beginner make a basic circuit by arranging power, an input, and an output; coding is not a prerequisite for that first build. The official getting-started resources say no STEAM background is required, and the activity library covers lessons and challenges for different grades and subjects (littleBits getting-started and activity resources).
littleBits is used at home and in classrooms, makerspaces, libraries, workshops, camps, and clubs. Its educational materials span engineering design, computer science and coding, science, math, music, robotics, art and design, technology, and language arts (littleBits educational resources). A workshop activity page recommends a two- to three-hour format; that is guidance for workshops, not a requirement for an introductory circuit (littleBits workshop activities).

Are the littleBits app and older kits still supported?
Check software requirements before buying an older Inventor Kit. Sphero Support says the littleBits app was removed from app stores in early 2025. The Space Rover Inventor Kit requires the app’s Controls section for its w33 Control Hub Bit, so a buyer should confirm a workable legacy setup before choosing that kit (Sphero Support: littleBits app removal). For a first purchase, a current kit that does not depend on the removed app is the lower-risk choice.

The official resource library offers kit-specific lessons, unit plans, educator guides, and invention challenges. Pick an activity suited to the kit and the learners, then use it as a starting point rather than treating the first design as fixed (littleBits resource library). For collaborative sessions, participants can design, test with others, and document what their invention does through photos or video (littleBits workshop activities).
