An interface defines an object’s shape; put defaults in the code that reads options or creates the object. For optional settings, choose among explicit fallbacks, parameter destructuring, a reusable defaults object, a partial-input normalizer, or a factory or constructor.
Can a TypeScript interface have default values?
No. An interface is a type-level description of an object, not executable code, so a property declaration such as theme: "light" describes a required string-literal value; it does not initialize one. Put initialization in a function, object construction, or class instead. The TypeScript Object Types handbook explains optional properties and defaults in consuming functions; the older Interfaces handbook page is marked deprecated and directs readers to newer documentation.
In the examples below, the interface describes values a caller may omit:
interface DisplayOptions {
theme?: "light" | "dark";
compact?: boolean;
pageSize?: number;
}
The ? means that a caller may leave out a property. It does not mean that the property receives a default. When code reads an optional property, it may get undefined; under strictNullChecks, account for that possibility by narrowing the value or providing a fallback.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
1. Use explicit fallback checks where you read the options
For a small number of values used in one place, check for undefined at the point of use:
function describe(options: DisplayOptions) {
const theme = options.theme === undefined ? "light" : options.theme;
const compact = options.compact === undefined ? false : options.compact;
return { theme, compact };
}
This preserves valid falsy values such as false, 0, or an empty string. By contrast, value || fallback uses the fallback for every falsy value, not just an omitted one. Use value ?? fallback when both null and undefined should trigger the default; use the explicit === undefined check when only omission or undefined should.

2. Set defaults while destructuring a function parameter
When a function needs several option values, destructuring makes its defaults visible at the boundary:
function render({
theme = "light",
compact = false,
pageSize = 20,
}: DisplayOptions) {
return { theme, compact, pageSize };
}
Inside render, those variables have values even when the caller omits the corresponding properties. A destructuring default also applies when a property is explicitly undefined, but not when it is null. The handbook’s object-types examples demonstrate typed destructured parameters with defaults.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
If callers may omit the entire options object, default the parameter to an empty object. This works here because every property in DisplayOptions is optional:
function render({ theme = "light" }: DisplayOptions = {}) {
return theme;
}
3. Keep shared defaults in one object and merge caller options
If several functions need the same configuration policy, define defaults once and overlay caller values:

const displayDefaults = {
theme: "light",
compact: false,
pageSize: 20,
} satisfies Required<DisplayOptions>;
function normalizeDisplayOptions(options: DisplayOptions) {
return { ...displayDefaults, ...options };
}
In an object spread, later properties win, so provided options override defaults. This merge is shallow: if an option contains a nested object, a caller’s partial nested object replaces that whole nested value rather than recursively filling its missing fields. Merge nested settings deliberately if that is the desired behavior.
The satisfies operator checks that the defaults fit the required shape while retaining the expression’s inferred type. It is available in TypeScript 4.9 and later. For earlier TypeScript versions, use a compatible type annotation, such as const displayDefaults: Required<DisplayOptions> = { ... }.

4. Accept partial input and return a complete settings object
When incomplete input is intentional but the rest of the program needs every field, make the input and output types distinct:
interface DisplaySettings {
theme: "light" | "dark";
compact: boolean;
pageSize: number;
}
type DisplaySettingsInput = Partial<DisplaySettings>;
function makeDisplaySettings(input: DisplaySettingsInput): DisplaySettings {
return {
theme: input.theme ?? "light",
compact: input.compact ?? false,
pageSize: input.pageSize ?? 20,
};
}
Partial<T> makes the properties of T optional to the type checker; Required<T> makes them required. Neither utility type creates runtime values. The function above does that by filling in values before returning a complete DisplaySettings object. See the official Utility Types documentation.
5. Initialize values in a factory or constructor
A factory is useful when callers provide partial settings but application code should receive a complete object:
function createDisplayOptions(
input: DisplayOptions = {},
): Required<DisplayOptions> {
return {
theme: input.theme ?? "light",
compact: input.compact ?? false,
pageSize: input.pageSize ?? 20,
};
}
Use a class field or constructor instead when the values belong to an instance. In both cases, the interface remains the contract for the object’s shape; the factory or constructor is the executable code that initializes its values.
Which defaulting technique should you use?
| Situation | Good starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One or two values used by one function | Explicit fallback or parameter destructuring | Keeps each default close to where it is needed. |
| Several optional fields reused across the application | Defaults object plus a normalizer | Centralizes the policy and returns a completed configuration. |
| Input may be incomplete, but internal code needs every field | Partial input type and complete output type | Makes the boundary between optional input and normalized settings explicit. |
| A value is created as a domain object or class instance | Factory or constructor | Places initialization at object creation. |
Before choosing, decide whether the entire object may be omitted and whether explicit false, 0, null, or undefined counts as user input. Those decisions determine which fallback check has the right behavior.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Putting an initializer in an interface. An interface has no runtime behavior; initialize values in implementation code.
- Assuming an optional property is always present. A read may produce
undefined, so narrow it or provide a fallback. - Using
||for every fallback. It replaces valid falsy values such asfalseand0. - Expecting
Partial<T>to supply values. It changes the type, not the runtime object. - Treating object spread as a deep merge. Nested objects need their own merge logic when partial nested input must be preserved.
- Applying shared defaults independently in several consumers. Normalize at one clear boundary when multiple parts of the program rely on the same completed configuration.
