For a C-based static site generator, choose according to how you want to write and build your site: sblg suits make-oriented workflows and HTML or XML content; swege and Bonobo center on Markdown; and mkws puts shell commands in its templates. LinuxLinks’ roundup, dated April 18, 2026, names eight projects: blogc, sblg, Housecat, mkws, Kevlar, swege, Bonobo, and bloggy. It does not provide a consistent scoring method, so this is a comparison of their documented approaches—not a measured ranking or a claim that these are objectively the eight best tools.

How to choose among these C static site generators

A static site generator produces site files—typically HTML—before you upload them to a web server. That can be useful for documentation and other sites whose pages do not need to be generated by a server for each visit. LinuxLinks identifies local preview, version control, easier data export, lower server load, and reduced software requirements as potential advantages, not guarantees. Static output does not make a site immune to every security risk. LinuxLinks’ static-site overview explains the general case.

The meaningful differences among these eight tools are their input formats, template and build workflows, output options, and dependencies. Available descriptions do not establish current maintenance status or complete installation requirements for every project. Check the upstream repository and license before adopting one, especially where the profile details are sparse or dated.

At a glance: the eight tools

Generator Documented workflow Notable details
blogc Make-compatible blog compilation Roundup gives no further verified details
sblg HTML/XHTML or XML articles merged into templates; make-style builds Static HTML, Atom, XML, and JSON modes; ISC license reported
Housecat Static-site generation with a simple interface Detailed features and license not established
mkws Shell-powered templates using .upphtml and pp Unix utilities in templates; ISC license reported
Kevlar HTML-first command-line workflow Markdown and reStructuredText recipes; zero-dependency claim reported
swege Markdown files built with the Discount library Incremental updates and rebuild command; Apache License 2.0 reported

bloggy Described as minimalist Detailed technical and license information not established

Descriptions and license details in this comparison come from LinuxLinks’ roundup and individual profiles; they are not independent tests. The roundup is dated April 18, 2026. Where a tool’s details are not established, that is a limit of the available profile—not proof that the feature or information does not exist.

Which generator fits your writing and build workflow?

blogc: a make-compatible blog compiler

LinuxLinks describes blogc as a blog compiler compatible with make. That makes it a candidate if you want to integrate blog generation into a make-oriented build. The roundup does not establish its current feature set, license, release state, supported platforms, or installation process, so verify those directly with the upstream project before choosing it.

sblg: HTML or XML content with feed and data outputs

sblg merges articles into templates to produce static HTML, Atom feeds, and JSON, and it is intended for make-style build environments. You can provide HTML/XHTML, XML fragments, or complete XML documents; Markdown can be converted to XHTML before use. The profile describes standalone, blog, and combined modes, as well as XML and JSON output. LinuxLinks’ profile, dated October 29, 2023, identifies the language as C, the license as ISC, and lists Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, macOS, Solaris, and Illumos. Those are profile claims, not confirmation of present-day support. Read the sblg profile.

Housecat: a simple interface, with few verified specifics

The roundup characterizes Housecat as a static-site generator with an intentionally simple interface. The available profile information does not establish its input formats, dependencies, license, supported platforms, or current maintenance status. Investigate those points in the upstream project before deciding whether its simplicity matches your needs.

mkws: shell as the template language

mkws uses .upphtml templates processed by pp, a preprocessor that embeds shell code in files. Its profile describes using Unix utilities directly in templates, with no configuration or package manager required and JavaScript optional. LinuxLinks reports an implementation of about 30 lines of shell and 400 lines of C; those are profile figures, not independently validated measurements. The profile names developer dASrian Emil Grigor and an ISC license. Read the mkws profile.

This workflow is most relevant if you are comfortable composing shell commands and want templates that can call Unix utilities. The profile’s no-package-manager claim should not be treated as a complete account of every prerequisite on your operating system.

Kevlar: HTML-first, with recipes for other formats

LinuxLinks describes Kevlar as a command-line, HTML-first generator and reports the project’s claims of being “batteries-included” and “zero-dependency.” It also describes recipes for Markdown and reStructuredText. The profile reports testing on Linux and Windows, identifies the repository as github.com/Aadv1k/kevlar, names developer Aadvik, and reports GNU GPL version 3.0. These are dated profile statements rather than independent tests or a guarantee about current releases. Read the Kevlar profile.

swege: Markdown with Discount

swege builds sites from Markdown using the Discount library. Its described workflow includes a swege.cfg configuration file, an example site, incremental updates, and a rebuild command. The profile says titles can be taken from the first Markdown line or an explicit title: field. It describes Discount as the main dependency and reports a codebase under 500 lines of C; both the dependency characterization and size are LinuxLinks profile claims, not a full installation audit or independent measurement.

The profile names Sergei Akhmatdinov, reports Apache License 2.0, and says swege was tested on GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS, with theoretical support for other Unix-like systems and Windows through MinGW. Testing and compatibility statements do not guarantee that a current build works on every system. Read the swege profile.

Bonobo: Markdown pages with JSON metadata

Bonobo combines JSON metadata with Markdown content. Its profile reports RSS support and metadata fields for title, description, date, language, and CSS selection, and says example pages are included in its test directory. LinuxLinks names Andrew Bonner and reports an ISC license. The profile does not establish a complete dependency list or supported-platform matrix. Read the Bonobo profile.

bloggy: minimalist, but not enough detail for a workflow match

The roundup includes bloggy and labels it minimalist, but the available description does not establish its input format, license, dependencies, supported systems, or maintenance status. Those gaps make a reliable feature-based comparison impossible. Check the current upstream project before evaluating it for a site. See the roundup listing.

Match the tool to your content and outputs

  • You want a make-oriented build: blogc is explicitly described as make-compatible. sblg is also intended for make-style environments and documents article-to-template compilation.
  • You already write HTML or XML: sblg accepts HTML/XHTML and XML input. Kevlar is described as HTML-first.
  • You want Markdown as the main content format: swege uses Discount, while Bonobo combines Markdown with JSON metadata. Kevlar’s profile lists Markdown recipes rather than describing Markdown as its core input format.
  • You want shell logic in templates: mkws uses shell-powered .upphtml templates processed by pp.
  • You need structured outputs or feeds: sblg reports Atom, XML, and JSON output modes; Bonobo reports RSS support. Confirm exact feed formats and configuration against the current upstream documentation.
  • Your platform or dependency policy is strict: compare the current installation instructions with your target system. The profile claims for Kevlar and swege are not a substitute for verifying present-day prerequisites and compatibility.

What to verify before adopting one

The descriptions are not equally detailed, and the project profiles span different dates. The sblg profile is dated October 29, 2023, while LinuxLinks’ roundup is dated April 18, 2026; those dates do not establish whether any project is actively maintained today. Before building a site around one, check its current upstream repository for:

  • Recent releases or commits and any stated support policy.
  • The license that applies to the version you plan to use.
  • Installation steps, build tools, libraries, and runtime dependencies.
  • Supported operating systems and whether platform claims refer to testing or intended compatibility.
  • Input and output formats, template behavior, and how feeds or incremental rebuilds are configured.

For blogc, Housecat, and bloggy in particular, the roundup’s short descriptions do not support a detailed technical or license comparison. For the other projects, profile information is useful for narrowing the shortlist, but should not be mistaken for a current upstream audit.
