Business Central works with e-commerce, CRM, and reporting tools through different integration patterns—not one universal connector. For Shopify, Microsoft provides a built-in connector; for Dynamics 365 Sales, the common route is Dataverse, with options to synchronize, access data virtually, or respond to events; for automation and reporting, Power Platform connectors and Power BI APIs, queries, and reports cover different needs. The practical choice depends on which system owns each field, whether data is copied or accessed on demand, how changes move, and who handles errors.
Choose an integration pattern that fits the job
Start with the information people need to use, then choose how it should move between systems. Microsoft’s Business Central integration overview describes connections to other Microsoft services and external systems, while its technical documentation distinguishes synchronization, virtual access, and event-based approaches. These patterns are not interchangeable.
| Tool or pattern | How it connects | Best fit | Key decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify Connector | Business Central synchronizes commerce data through the connector and job queue. | Connecting a Shopify store to Business Central for catalog, inventory, orders, and related data. | Which data to synchronize, and how to configure and monitor each flow. |
| Dataverse synchronization | Selected records are replicated between Business Central and Dataverse. | Keeping selected CRM and ERP records aligned for use across both systems. | Which system owns each field, what records qualify, and which direction applies. |
| Dataverse virtual tables | Dataverse accesses Business Central data through APIs rather than keeping a second replicated copy for that access pattern. | Users who need to work with Business Central data from Dataverse. | Whether virtual access suits the required create, read, update, and delete operations. |
| Events and Power Platform | Business Central can expose data-change webhooks and business events; Power Platform connectors communicate through REST APIs. | Responding to changes or building workflows and applications. | What should trigger an action, and how the workflow’s failures will be handled. |
| Power BI | Power BI reads Business Central data for a semantic model, or its reports and visuals can be embedded in the Business Central client. | Analysis and reporting, either inside Power BI or within Business Central. | Whether standard APIs and queries expose the needed data shape. |
The table summarizes documented capabilities, not a service-level promise: the cited Microsoft pages do not establish a universal synchronization latency or guarantee for these patterns. See Microsoft’s Dataverse integration overview and Power Platform integration overview for the technical distinctions.
Connect Shopify to Business Central
The built-in Shopify Connector can support multiple Shopify shops. Microsoft describes synchronization of products, pricing, inventory, orders, customer data, fulfillments, and other information, with the job queue handling automatic synchronization and logs available to help troubleshoot. The exact flows still depend on configuration; connecting the store alone does not settle catalog, pricing, tax, customer, or order-handling choices. Read the Shopify Connector overview for the documented scope.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Setup and test the flows
- Confirm you have a Shopify account and store, and check that the Business Central Shopify Connector app is installed and available for your environment.
- In Business Central, follow Microsoft’s Shopify connector getting-started guide to connect the Shopify store.
- Configure the synchronization you need for items, prices and taxes, inventory, customers or companies, and order fulfillment. Decide which system is authoritative for each relevant value before enabling broad flows.
- Test representative products, stock changes, customers, and orders in an appropriate non-production setup where possible. Check the connector’s logs, confirm the results in both systems, and agree who investigates exceptions.
Microsoft says the Shopify app is preinstalled for new Business Central sign-ups and trials, but existing environments may require an installation or permissions check. Availability can vary by localization, so verify it for the specific environment rather than assuming every tenant has the same setup.
Integrate Business Central with Dynamics 365 Sales
The common route to connect Dynamics 365 Sales with Business Central uses Dataverse. Microsoft’s integration overview describes a Dataverse-first setup followed by completing the connection from Business Central; the connection can make Business Central information available while users work in Sales. Consult the integration overview and synchronization guidance for the applicable setup and configuration details.

Use synchronization when both systems need records
Synchronization copies selected records between the applications. Business Central and Sales can synchronize in either direction depending on the record type and configuration. Microsoft describes table mappings, field mappings, synchronization rules, and coupled records, with examples such as customer/account and contact data. Treat each as a design choice: specify which records should qualify, how fields map, which side supplies the accepted value, and how your team will resolve mismatches or duplicates.
Use virtual access when a second copy is not the goal
Dataverse virtual tables let users perform create, read, update, and delete operations against Business Central APIs without maintaining a separate replicated copy for that access pattern. This is a different approach from synchronizing records. Assess whether it suits the way Sales users need to work and the operations they need before choosing it.

Use events for change-driven workflows
Microsoft documents webhooks for create, update, or delete data-change events, as well as a separate business-events pattern. Events can support workflows triggered by changes, but that does not establish that every integration is real-time or that delivery and downstream processing meet a particular latency. Define the event, the receiving process, and how the team will detect and recover from failures.
Use Power Platform for workflows and apps
The Business Central connector lets Power Platform products communicate with Business Central through REST APIs. Microsoft names Power Apps and Power Automate among the uses, and its integration guidance also covers Azure Logic Apps. Choose this route when the requirement is an app or workflow that uses Business Central data, rather than assuming it replaces a purpose-built commerce connector or reporting setup. Check the connector’s prerequisites, permissions, and applicable service licensing before implementation.

Connect Power BI for reporting
There are two documented reporting patterns: connect a Power BI semantic model to Business Central data, or embed a Power BI report, page, or visual in the Business Central client. For Business Central online, Microsoft recommends API pages and queries to expose data to Power BI. Built-in APIs cover common entities such as customers, items, and sales orders; a custom API may be needed if the standard set does not provide the required data shape. OData web services are also covered in Microsoft’s guidance. See Power BI integration setup for applicability and licensing notes, including the distinction between online and on-premises.
Check the supplied Power BI apps before building from scratch
For Business Central online, Microsoft lists Power BI apps for CRM, Finance, and Sales. Their dashboards support drilling into reports, filtering and customizing views, and manual or scheduled refresh. Access depends on permissions to the required tables and web services. Review Business Central apps in Power BI to check whether an app fits before developing a custom report.

Plan ownership, access, and recovery before go-live
An integration can be technically connected yet operationally unreliable if its data ownership, access, and exception handling are unclear. Before enabling production flows, document the decisions that affect daily work:
- Data movement: Identify whether each requirement calls for replicated records, virtual access, API reads or writes, or an event-driven action.
- Ownership and direction: Assign a master system for each important field, define which records move and in what direction, and decide how duplicates or conflicting changes are resolved.
- Timing and monitoring: Set the needed update cadence, identify who checks queues, logs, or workflow failures, and establish how failed or incomplete work is investigated. Do not assume a latency guarantee that the chosen service does not state.
- Data shape: Compare built-in entities, mappings, and APIs with the information users actually need; plan custom APIs, reports, or partner extensions only where standard options do not fit.
- Deployment and access: Confirm online versus on-premises applicability, country or localization availability, permissions, and licensing for Business Central and connected services. Some integrations require separate subscriptions or licenses.
- Testing and reconciliation: Test representative records and end-to-end flows before go-live; reconcile results between systems, agree how exceptions are corrected, and understand any documented reset or re-import options for the connector.
Microsoft’s documentation describes product capabilities and setup paths; it does not establish a universally best mapping or configuration for every organization. Verify current behavior and prerequisites against the documentation for your Business Central version, deployment, region, and connected-service plans.
