Use linewidth=0 to hide the outline around a filled area created with Matplotlib’s fill_between. To show an outline, set edgecolor and adjust its thickness with linewidth. These settings style the filled polygon; a separate line drawn with plot must be styled independently.
What fill_between draws
ax.fill_between(x, y1, y2) fills the area between the curves defined by (x, y1) and (x, y2). If you omit y2, it defaults to zero. The call returns a FillBetweenPolyCollection, so properties such as face color, edge color, and line width apply to that collection. See the Matplotlib Axes.fill_between API reference.
How to remove the fill outline
Pass linewidth=0 to suppress the filled polygon’s visible outline:
ax.fill_between(x, y1, y2, color="C0", alpha=0.3, linewidth=0)Matplotlib’s fill-between alpha example uses this no-outline treatment. You can keep your chosen fill color and transparency; the key setting for the outline is linewidth=0.

How to draw an edge
Set edgecolor to choose the outline color and linewidth to set its thickness. The shorter aliases are ec and lw.

ax.fill_between(x, y1, y2, facecolor="tab:blue", edgecolor="face")The API also accepts edgecolors. These styling properties are passed to the collection created by fill_between; consult the Matplotlib collections API for collection property details.
Choose a fill style

Keep a separately plotted line in mind
The fill’s boundary and a curve drawn with ax.plot are separate plot elements. Setting linewidth=0 on fill_between removes the fill collection’s outline, not a separately plotted curve. For example, if you use ax.plot(x, y1) to draw the curve over the fill, style that line in the plot call. If an edge and a separate curve both trace the same boundary, consider whether you need both, since they can make the boundary look doubled.

Conditional and stepwise fills
Use where to fill selected intervals
The optional where argument takes a Boolean mask. An interval between adjacent samples x[i] and x[i+1] is filled only when both where[i] and where[i+1] are true. An isolated true value between false values therefore does not fill an interval.
Handle curves that cross
If the mask represents a condition such as y1 > y2, the curves may cross between sampled points. With the default interpolate=False, the fill is limited to sample positions. Set interpolate=True to estimate the crossing and extend the filled region to that intersection.

Represent stepwise values
Use step="pre", step="post", or step="mid" when the fill should follow stepwise values. The API reference documents these options along with where and interpolate.
Version note
The cited API reference is for Matplotlib 3.11.2. If your project uses another release, check the documentation for that version; behavior and available properties should be confirmed against the version you have installed.
