Every result needs its publisher, software version and topology, hardware, workload, client setup, and measurements, with vendor claims identified as such. The published figures show why: the outcomes change with instance size, pipeline depth, and whether Redis is represented by one process or a cluster.
What memdb-oracle should do
A useful answer to “Would you change Redis for Dragonfly?” starts by clarifying the workload and migration requirements, then separates measured evidence from interpretation. The question appears in a sysadmin discussion, but it is an example of reader phrasing, not evidence of how common the question is.
For each performance claim, memdb-oracle should identify who ran or published the benchmark, the software versions and topology, instance and CPU details, operations and data size, client tool and configuration, persistence or other background activity, throughput, and latency distribution if reported. It should also say whether the client, network, or datastore may have limited the result. If a source does not state a detail, the answer should say so rather than infer it.
What the published measurements say
The figures below are vendor- or project-published results, not neutral adjudications. The Dragonfly repository was accessed in 2026, but its README does not clearly date these benchmark entries; 2026 therefore identifies the access year, not a confirmed test or publication year. Redis’s counter-comparison was published in 2022.

| Publisher and setup | Workload and client details | Reported measurements |
|---|---|---|
| Dragonfly project; AWS m5.large; repository accessed 2026, benchmark entry publication date unstated | memtier_benchmark; 20 clients; 100 seconds; 4 threads; 256-byte data; distinct client seed | SET: Redis 159K QPS, Dragonfly 173K QPS. GET: Redis 194K QPS, Dragonfly 191K QPS. |
| Dragonfly project; AWS m5.xlarge; repository accessed 2026, benchmark entry publication date unstated | memtier_benchmark; 20 clients; 100 seconds; 6 threads; 256-byte data; distinct client seed | SET: Redis 190K QPS, Dragonfly 279K QPS. GET: Redis 220K QPS, Dragonfly 305K QPS. |
| Dragonfly project; AWS c6gn.16xlarge; repository accessed 2026, benchmark entry publication date unstated | Dragonfly compared with a single Redis process; the repository’s summary does not specify all workload and client details for this comparison | Dragonfly is described as crossing 3.8M QPS and delivering 25× the throughput of a single Redis process. This is not an equivalent-topology comparison with a Redis cluster. |
| Dragonfly project; repository accessed 2026, benchmark entry publication date unstated; the cited summary does not identify hardware | Pipeline size 30; other setup details are not stated in the summary | SET: 10M QPS. GET: 15M QPS. |
| Redis; AWS c6gn.16xlarge; Redis 7.0.0 in a cluster with 40 primary shards; Redis-published 2022 comparison | GET at pipeline 1 and pipeline 30. Redis describes differences in client configuration; these are its trial results, not a neutral adjudication. | Pipeline 1: Redis 4.43M ops/sec versus 3.8M reproduced Dragonfly ops/sec. Pipeline 30: Redis 22.9M ops/sec versus 15.9M reproduced Dragonfly ops/sec. Redis also reports 18%–40% greater throughput for Redis while using 40 of 64 vCPUs in this comparison. |
| Dragonfly project; repository accessed 2026, experiment publication date unstated | Memory experiment with approximately 5GB loaded; details beyond the project’s stated setup are not summarized here | The project reports 30% better idle memory efficiency and a Redis peak near three times Dragonfly during snapshotting. |
The m5 results are close on GET at m5.large but diverge more at m5.xlarge; they are not evidence that the same ratio will hold for a different workload or server size. The c6gn claims also answer different questions: Dragonfly’s 25× statement compares against a single Redis process, while Redis’s 2022 comparison uses a 40-primary-shard Redis cluster and a reproduced Dragonfly result. The pipeline-30 figures of 15M and 15.9M QPS come from separate project-published benchmark entries and should not be merged into one result.
Redis’s benchmark guidance recommends matching operations and benchmark behavior, and warns against comparing results from different benchmark programs or extrapolating beyond the tested conditions. It states: “It is not really fair to compare one single Redis instance to a multi-threaded data store.” That is Redis’s vendor-authored methodological guidance, not a finding from an independent standards body. See Redis benchmark guidance and the Redis 7.0.0 comparison and benchmark appendix.

How to judge whether a benchmark applies to your workload
Throughput alone cannot establish which store will perform better in an application. Redis’s guidance identifies factors that can affect a comparison, including client and network latency, connection count, pipelining, CPU and network capacity, persistence, data size, and monitoring. A defensible answer should check the following before drawing a conclusion:
- Version and topology: Compare the actual versions and deployment shapes. A single Redis process, a sharded Redis cluster, and a multi-threaded Dragonfly deployment are not interchangeable test subjects.
- Operations and data: Match the read/write mix, data size, and payloads to the application. SET-only, GET-only, and mixed workloads answer different questions.
- Client and concurrency: Record the benchmark tool, client count, threads, connections, concurrency, and pipeline depth. A benchmark client can saturate before the datastore does.
- Persistence and background activity: Note whether snapshots or persistence were active and whether monitoring or other background work changed available resources.
- Latency and capacity: Pair throughput with latency percentiles, memory behavior, and evidence about whether the server, client, or network reached its limit. A high operations-per-second figure alone does not describe tail latency or resource cost.
Redis advises keeping comparisons behaviorally similar and warns against extrapolating from unlike benchmark programs. When reproducing results, keep the client separate where needed and confirm it can generate sufficient load; otherwise a client or network ceiling can make server throughput look lower than it is.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
The cited figures establish that vendors have published results under particular conditions: Dragonfly’s repository reports m5 instance tests, high-throughput and pipeline results, and a memory experiment; Redis published a c6gn.16xlarge cluster counter-comparison in 2022. They do not establish one neutral, current winner across application workloads, nor do they show how either system performs for a reader’s particular command mix, latency target, persistence setup, or data size.
Accordingly, memdb-oracle should label each result with its publisher and conditions, separate the reported measurement from any inference, and mark missing details as not stated. It should not average unlike results or use a vendor’s benchmark to imply universal superiority.

What to verify before migrating
Dragonfly’s documentation describes compatibility with Redis and Memcached APIs and claims compatibility with the Redis ecosystem. That broad statement is not proof that every command, client behavior, module, or operational feature is interchangeable. The Dragonfly documentation was last updated August 10, 2026; check its current compatibility information against the specific Redis features the application uses.
Before changing a production system, inventory the application’s commands and modules, persistence and replication needs, failover expectations, and client assumptions. Then validate those cases against current documentation and in a representative test. API compatibility may make evaluation practical, but it does not by itself establish operational equivalence or performance for your workload.
