You can run open-weight AI models in the cloud without overspending by matching the billing model to your traffic, starting with the smallest model that meets your quality needs, and measuring real throughput before scaling. Open weights may remove a model-license charge, but compute, storage, networking, and the work of running the service still cost money.

What “open” saves—and what it does not

Open weights let you download and run a model yourself, subject to that model’s license and usage terms. They do not make inference free: you still pay for the GPU or hosted endpoint, storage, networking, and deployment operations. OpenAI says its gpt-oss models are available under Apache 2.0 subject to its usage policy; that license does not automatically apply to other models. Check the terms for the specific model you plan to use.

OpenAI’s cost guidance puts the choice in workload terms: “Costs vary based on infrastructure, workload, and operational approach.” Self-hosting can cost less in some cases, while an API can be more efficient once hosting, maintenance, and upgrades are counted. OpenAI also says gpt-oss is not served through its API; compatible runtimes include vLLM, Ollama, and llama.cpp. Its deployments are self-managed, and OpenAI does not provide implementation or debugging support for third-party-hosted setups. OpenAI’s gpt-oss cost and deployment guidance explains these qualifications.

Choose billing that fits your traffic

The key difference is whether you pay for model use or for reserved GPU time. A request- or token-billed endpoint can avoid GPU charges while a service sits idle. A rented GPU can make sense when it is busy enough that sustained output spreads its hourly charge over many tokens. There is no universal traffic threshold at which one option becomes cheaper: provider prices, model performance, and utilization vary.

Hosted, per-token inference Pay for tokens or active request execution under the provider’s terms. Traffic is low, irregular, bursty, or experimental. Token charges can accumulate at high volume; confirm model, limits, terms, and current rates.
Dedicated rented GPU Pay for GPU time, potentially with separate storage and related fees. Usage is predictable and sustained, with enough utilization to justify the hourly charge. Idle time, operations, model loading, and restarts can erase apparent per-token savings.

These are cost patterns, not guarantees. For example, Runpod’s guide lists its public gpt-oss-120b endpoint at $10.00 per million tokens as of 25 August 2026. The same guide, accessed 4 October 2026, lists Secure Cloud rates of $1.59 per hour for an A100 PCIe and $2.89 per hour for an H100 PCIe. Those are provider-specific examples, not market-wide prices or a direct cost comparison; rates may change and depend on the available region and terms. Check the live rate card before budgeting. Runpod’s gpt-oss deployment guide provides the endpoint and hardware examples.

  1. Estimate traffic. Record average and peak requests, input and output tokens, context length, concurrency, and how predictable demand is. Separate continuously busy batch jobs from services that may be idle for long periods.
  2. Calculate hosted inference. Multiply expected monthly input and output volume by the selected endpoint’s current rates. Add provider minimums, limits, or other fees shown on its pricing page.
  3. Calculate GPU hosting. Multiply the GPU’s current hourly rate by billed hours. Add storage, networking, persistent volumes, and engineering or operations time. Account for idle hours, startup and restart behavior, and the tokens the GPU actually serves.
  4. Measure effective output. Benchmark representative prompts and production-like concurrency. Use measured throughput and realistic utilization to estimate cost per token; do not assume a provider’s best-case throughput will match your workload.
  5. Compare quality and latency. Test a smaller model against a larger alternative on the prompts that matter. Include response time, cold starts, context length, and the quality effects of quantization or batching.

Runpod illustrates why throughput assumptions matter: it estimates about $0.30 per million output tokens for Llama 3.1 8B on an H100 SXM and about $2.80 per million output tokens for Llama 3.1 70B on two H100 SXM GPUs, under sustained-throughput assumptions. Runpod describes these as directional estimates that vary with GPU price and achieved throughput—not guaranteed rates for other workloads. See Runpod’s Llama 3.1 inference-cost guide.

Start with the smallest model that meets the quality bar

A larger model can demand more expensive hardware, but size alone does not tell you whether the added capability is worth its cost. Test a smaller candidate on representative tasks first, then move up only if its answers fail your quality requirements.

For the gpt-oss family, Runpod’s guide recommends memory capacity within 16 GB for gpt-oss-20b and within 80 GB for gpt-oss-120b. These are model-specific recommendations, not universal requirements for other models or deployment setups. The guide attributes the architecture figures to OpenAI’s release post and model card: gpt-oss-120b has 117 billion total parameters and 5.1 billion active parameters per token; gpt-oss-20b has 21 billion total and 3.6 billion active parameters per token. Active parameters do not remove the need to meet the model’s memory and serving requirements.

Reduce serving costs before adding GPU capacity

More hardware is not the only way to serve more requests. Tuning concurrency and reducing model memory needs can improve how much useful work each GPU performs.

  • Test 4-bit quantization. Google Cloud says 4-bit quantized models can reduce memory requirements and increase runtime parallelism, but the effect on answer quality must be checked for your use case. Its guidance says, “Choose 4-bit quantized models to maximize concurrency unless you can prove they affect result quality.” It does not promise a fixed percentage cost reduction. Google Cloud’s Cloud Run GPU inference best practices discuss quantization and concurrency.
  • Use suitable concurrency. Tune how many requests the service handles together against measured latency, memory use, and quality. Too little concurrency can leave capacity unused; too much can degrade response times or exceed available memory.
  • Reduce startup work. Google recommends choosing a suitable model format and prebuilding transformations where practical, so deployments do not repeat avoidable work at startup.
  • Plan model storage and loading. Google recommends Cloud Storage for larger model artifacts in Cloud Run. Large files in container images can increase build and image-import time and result in multiple artifact copies. Downloading weights from the internet at startup can be slow and unpredictable and can make the service dependent on a remote host.

Count operating effort, reliability, and data requirements

A rented GPU is not a hands-off model service. Someone must handle deployment, monitoring, security, scaling, upgrades, and incident response. Include that time in the monthly comparison; if operating the service is substantial, a managed API may be more efficient even when self-hosting appears cheaper on hardware alone.

Also decide what availability and data handling your application requires. A cloud GPU rental does not, by itself, guarantee privacy or mean that you physically control the hardware. Review the provider’s terms, data location, retention, and security controls for your deployment. Google’s air-gapped reference architecture describes sharing infrastructure across internal applications and using quantization to reduce total cost of ownership for sustained, large-scale inference in a specialized environment with strict external-connectivity constraints; it is not a general price guarantee. Google’s GDC air-gapped GPU inference architecture describes that setting.
