Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallConvert each binary string to a Python integer with base 2, add the values, then format the total in base 2. This short program accepts non-empty strings made only of 0 and 1 and prints the sum without a 0b prefix.
Python program to add two binary numbers
Use int(value, 2) to interpret each input as binary. Python’s + operator adds the resulting integers, and format(total, "b") converts the sum back to binary digits.
def add_binary(a: str, b: str) -> str:
if not a or not b or any(bit not in "01" for bit in a + b):
raise ValueError("Inputs must be non-empty binary strings")
total = int(a, 2) + int(b, 2)
return format(total, "b")
first = input("Enter the first binary number: ").strip()
second = input("Enter the second binary number: ").strip()
try:
print("Sum:", add_binary(first, second))
except ValueError as error:
print(error)
Example
Enter 1011 and 1101. The program prints Sum: 11000: the inputs represent decimal 11 and 13, and their total, 24, is binary 11000.
Why the conversion works
A string such as 1011 is text, so it must be parsed with radix 2 rather than treated as a decimal number. The call int("1011", 2) produces the integer value 11. After adding the two integer values, format(total, "b") renders the result in base 2.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Python’s bin() can also convert a non-negative integer to binary, but it returns a prefix: the Python documentation defines it as converting an integer to “a binary string prefixed with ‘0b’.” For output containing only binary digits, format(total, "b") avoids that prefix. See the Python documentation for bin().
What inputs this program accepts
- Non-empty strings: empty input is rejected.
- Binary digits only: any character other than
0or1raises aValueError, which the command-line example displays. - Leading zeros: accepted, but they do not have to be preserved in the output. For example, adding
001and01returns10, not a padded result. - Signed values: this input contract does not accept a sign or negative binary values.
The strip() calls remove whitespace at the beginning or end of each input line before validation. The program does not silently delete invalid characters or try to reinterpret malformed input.

When to use built-in conversion or manual carries
| Approach | Best suited to | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Convert, add, format | A practical Python utility or a concise solution | Python parses the binary strings as integers, adds them, and formats the total in base 2. |
| Manual right-to-left carry | An exercise specifically about implementing binary arithmetic | Process digits from right to left, recording each output bit and carrying into the next column. |
The first approach uses Python’s integer arithmetic; Python documents integer range as limited by available memory. Choose the manual method when the learning objective is to understand carries or when you need to process digit strings directly rather than convert them into integer objects. No performance comparison is established here.

Do not use eval() to parse binary input. It executes the supplied text as Python code rather than merely validating a number. Converting with int(text, 2) and checking the allowed characters gives the input a narrow, explicit meaning. See the Python Wiki discussion of eval.
