Build domain verification as a finite-state process: look up the expected DNS TXT record, mark the domain verified only when a returned value matches the current token, and retry transient outcomes only within a defined attempt limit and deadline. While checks are pending, explain what is missing, show the exact record name and value, and give a realistic next-check indication. If the limit expires, stop polling and offer a useful recovery action.

DNS propagation has no universal time guarantee. The retry window is a limit set by your application, not proof that a record is absent everywhere.

What should domain verification check?

For a DNS-based verification flow, the customer publishes a TXT value at a specific owner name. Your verifier queries that exact name and compares the result with the token expected for the current verification request. A successful DNS response alone does not prove control: the returned value must match.

ACME DNS-01 is a useful standards-based example. It uses a TXT record at a validation name formed by prepending _acme-challenge to the domain. Other products may use different owner names, record types, token rules, and status labels, so do not assume that every domain-verification workflow follows ACME exactly. Let’s Encrypt’s challenge documentation describes DNS-01 and notes that DNS API providers may not report how long propagation will take.

How do TXT lookups work in Node.js?

Node.js dnsPromises.resolveTxt() returns a two-dimensional array. Each inner array contains the text chunks for one TXT record. Join the chunks within each record before comparing them to a token; do not join separate records together. Promise failures include DNS error codes that can be captured for diagnostics.

import { resolveTxt } from 'node:dns/promises';

async function findMatchingTxt(ownerName, expectedToken) {
  const records = await resolveTxt(ownerName);
  return records.some(chunks => chunks.join('') === expectedToken);
}

This example only performs a lookup and comparison. The application still needs to decide how to classify a missing record, mismatch, or DNS error, and when to retry. See the Node.js resolveTxt() documentation for the API’s response shape and error behavior.

Which states should the verifier use?

Keep the customer’s required action distinct from the verifier’s current work. A practical application state model can use the following states; their names are an implementation choice, not required protocol labels.

Application state Meaning Typical customer guidance
pending A verification request exists, but checking has not yet begun or the record is not yet observable. Publish or confirm the displayed DNS record.
checking or processing Lookups are underway within the configured retry budget. Explain what the verifier is checking and when it will check again.
verified A TXT value at the expected owner name matches the current token. Confirm completion.
Terminal failure A known mismatch, permissions or configuration problem, or exhausted deadline prevents completion. State the observed issue and offer a correction or recheck path.

RFC 8555 defines ACME challenge states as pending, processing, valid, and invalid. A challenge begins pending, moves to processing while validation runs, and ultimately becomes valid or invalid. This asynchronous protocol is a useful model, but an application’s domain-verification status should reflect its own workflow. RFC 8555 was published by the IETF in March 2019.

How should polling be bounded?

Set both a maximum number of attempts and an overall elapsed-time deadline. A count alone can run too long if delays are large; a deadline alone can permit excessive lookups if the interval is too short. Choose the interval, attempt budget, and deadline based on observed behavior of your resolver path and the support experience you can provide. RFC 8555 recommends retrying a failed initial validation query after some time to account for provisioning delays, but it does not prescribe a universal schedule.

  1. Start a verification request with the expected owner name and token, an attempt counter, and a deadline.
  2. Query the exact owner name and record the outcome. Mark the request verified only if a TXT record’s joined chunks equal the expected token.
  3. If the record is absent or not yet visible, classify it as potentially transient only while the request remains within its configured budget.
  4. Wait for the configured delay before checking again. Avoid tight loops; add jitter when many verifications may run concurrently so they do not all query in synchronized bursts.
  5. Stop when the token matches, a policy-defined terminal error occurs, the attempt budget is exhausted, or the deadline passes. Persist the terminal reason and show the customer a recovery action.

Retry classification is an application policy: an absent record may be transient, while a stable mismatch or a configuration or permission error may warrant a terminal result or a different recovery path. Do not retry every DNS failure blindly. Keep the policy explicit and consistent with how your verifier resolves names.

What should customers see while verification is pending?

A useful pending message identifies the record being checked, the reason the process is waiting, and the next useful action. For example: “We’re waiting for the TXT record at _acme-challenge.example.com to become visible. Confirm the record name and value below; we’ll check again in about 30 seconds.” Show a specific interval only if the implementation will actually honor it.

  • Display the exact owner name and expected value, including the current token.
  • Say whether the system is waiting for the record to appear, checking it, or retrying after a lookup problem.
  • Use a next-check time or progress indicator tied to the real polling schedule; avoid implying a guaranteed completion time.
  • When the deadline expires, replace indefinite pending status with the observed reason, explain that the application’s retry window ended, and offer recheck or record-correction steps.

A timeout means the verifier stopped within its own configured budget. It does not establish that DNS propagation has completed or that the record is missing from every resolver.

How long does DNS TXT verification take?

There is no general duration established for all DNS providers and verification systems. RFC 8555 leaves retry timing to the operator, and Let’s Encrypt notes that a DNS API may not tell a customer how long propagation will take. Set expectations around your own polling schedule and deadline instead of promising a universal number of minutes or hours.

Amazon Web Services documents a product-specific case: AWS Certificate Manager attempts its ACME DNS validation for up to 72 hours before timing out. Its documented failure reasons include record mismatch, access denied, missing hosted zone, CAA error, and timeout. That window describes ACM behavior, not a general DNS propagation rule. AWS Certificate Manager ACME domain validation provides the service-specific details.

How should you choose a resolver and retry policy?

There is no single polling library or schedule established here. When selecting an implementation, assess the choices that affect correctness and customer experience:

  • Resolver path: Decide whether checks use an authoritative or recursive resolver, and ensure the choice is consistent with the verifier’s actual resolution path.
  • Latency and deadline: Balance how quickly customers receive a result against the total time the application will keep checking.
  • Error classification: Distinguish absent or not-yet-visible records, mismatched values, and DNS or configuration errors, and retain useful diagnostics.
  • Customer recovery: Provide an actionable next step for pending and terminal states rather than exposing only a generic failure.
  • Scale: Consider query load when many checks run concurrently; deliberate delays and jitter can reduce synchronized bursts.

Validate resolver-specific choices against the infrastructure you deploy. A DNS-01 certificate check is a useful example of asynchronous TXT validation, not a guarantee that another product uses the same name, record workflow, or security policy.
