If different computers hear about the transactions in different orders, their copies can disagree. Bitcoin addresses that problem with shared validation rules and proof of work, allowing participants without a central ledger owner to converge on an accepted history over time.
Why a shared ledger needs more than copies
In a centrally managed ledger, an operator can order updates and reject a conflicting spend. With a distributed ledger, computers receive messages at different times. Two groups may each see a different, validly signed transaction first and temporarily build different views of what happened.
Copying data to many machines is replication; deciding which conflicting updates count is consensus. Replicas alone do not settle the conflict. Bitcoin’s design combines transaction authorization, independent rule-checking, proof of work, and a branch-selection rule to establish a shared history.
What signatures prove—and what they do not
A digital signature lets participants check that the holder of a relevant key authorized a transaction. It does not prove that the same funds were not also authorized for a conflicting transaction, nor does it tell the network which transaction should prevail. Participants need a way to agree on transaction ordering and on which valid history to extend.

How blocks and proof of work make history costly to replace
Bitcoin transactions are collected into blocks. Each block links to its predecessor, so changing an earlier block would require rebuilding the work that follows it as well. Nodes independently check candidate blocks against Bitcoin’s rules; proof of work helps determine which valid branch represents the accepted history.
As Bitcoin.org’s Developer Documentation puts it, “The block chain provides Bitcoin’s public ledger, an ordered and timestamped record of transactions.” The links and proof of work do not make a chain impossible to change. Rather, replacing accepted history requires producing a competing valid history with enough accumulated work to overtake it.

How participants resolve a temporary fork
A fork can happen when different nodes learn about valid blocks in different orders. One group may extend one block while another group extends a competing block. For a time, both groups can have different tips without either violating the protocol rules.
Nodes follow the valid chain with the greatest accumulated proof of work. “Longest chain” is a convenient shorthand, but block count alone is not the criterion: the work invested in the chain is what matters. When additional work makes one valid branch prevail, nodes that had followed the other branch can switch to it, and transactions from that branch may return to consideration if they remain valid.

Why confirmations increase confidence, not certainty
A transaction has one confirmation when it is included in a block. Each later block built on that block adds another confirmation and increases the work an alternative history would need to replace it. Recent blocks can still be replaced, so more confirmations generally mean more confidence rather than mathematical finality.
Bitcoin’s payment guidance gives six confirmations as an example for higher-risk payments, while describing that threshold as somewhat arbitrary. It is not a universal guarantee or a requirement for every payment. A recipient’s confirmation policy can depend on the payment’s value, how quickly it must be accepted, and the risk they are willing to take.

What the system assumes
Bitcoin removes the need for a permanent central ledger operator, not the need for rules or assumptions. Nodes check transactions and blocks against common rules, while proof of work provides a way to choose among valid competing histories. The original Bitcoin white paper’s security model assumes honest participants control more computational power than any cooperating attacker group.
In the white paper’s words, “The majority decision is represented by the longest chain, which has the greatest proof-of-work effort invested in it.” The mechanism is not a judgment about which participant has good intentions: it is a rule-based way to select valid history under that computational-power assumption.
