Expert Reviews’ Jonathan Bray found richer, fuller sound and improved comfort, alongside better noise cancellation than the original Ace. At the £399 UK price listed in his 22 September 2026 review, the case for buying them rests on those strengths: Sony’s WH-1000XM6 was £50 cheaper in the same review context and cancelled noise more effectively, while the £499 Apple AirPods Max 2 may suit iPhone users willing to accept more weight and less battery life.
What changed from the original Sonos Ace?
The exterior and low-profile earcups look much like the original, and the physical-control approach is familiar. The right-earcup slider clicks for playback and moves to adjust volume. Most of the update is inside the headphones or in their fit and software:
- Ear cushions: Magnetic cushions have denser padding and a changed inner shape, contributing to the reviewer’s improved comfort impression.
- Wear sensing: The sensor has moved lower, with the aim of making auto-pause and resume more reliable.
- Drivers and sound: Redesigned 40 mm drivers accompany a warmer, fuller tuning with stronger bass presence and more textured mids, according to Bray.
- Battery: Expert Reviews reports up to 35 hours with ANC enabled, five hours more than the original Ace and the Sony WH-1000XM6 in its comparison. These are the review’s stated figures, not independent measurements established here.
- Software: The Sonos app adds an eight-band EQ instead of simple bass, mid and treble controls. Bray notes that it has no EQ presets.
- Battery replacement: Bray says the battery is apparently user-replaceable, but reports no easy way to dismantle the earcups.
Bray’s overall judgment is clear: “The Sonos Ace Ultra are, clearly, better headphones than their predecessors.” That is a reviewer’s conclusion, not a manufacturer or standards-body claim.
How good is the sound quality?
The Ace Ultra’s character is fuller and warmer than the original Ace, with more prominent bass and mids that Bray describes as more textured. He found the result engaging and fun, particularly for listeners who like a bass-forward presentation. In complex mixes, however, he preferred the Sony WH-1000XM6’s separation of mid-bass instruments. The choice is therefore less about one headphone being universally better and more about whether you value the Sonos’s fuller presentation or Sony’s greater control in that part of the mix.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For wired listening, the review says USB-C can deliver CD-quality 16-bit/48 kHz audio without Bluetooth compression. Over Bluetooth 5, the listed codecs are SBC and AAC, along with aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, aptX Adaptive Low Latency and aptX HD. The eight-band EQ offers more adjustment than the original’s simpler controls, though there are no presets to apply with a single tap.
How effective is the noise cancellation?
Bray heard a clear improvement over the original Ace, attributing it to the denser cushions, more secure fit and revised ANC algorithm. He still found both the Sony WH-1000XM6 and Apple AirPods Max 2 stronger at reducing noise. Sonos also lacks Sony’s automatic Adaptive Sound Control equivalent, according to the review.

The ambient pass-through sounded natural to Bray. Sidetone is a separate call-focused feature: it lets you hear your own voice while speaking with ANC enabled. It should not be confused with an automatic system that changes noise control based on surroundings.
What about call quality?
In Bray’s listening tests, the Ace Ultra suppressed enough background noise to keep speech understandable without noticeably sacrificing overall voice quality. It did not remove background noise completely. These are the reviewer’s subjective findings, not laboratory call-quality measurements.

How does Sonos speaker linking work?
Expert Reviews describes headphone linking as an early-access feature associated with Sonos 27 and Fabric technology. After setup in the Sonos app, audio can move between the headphones and a nearby compatible speaker. The review names Move 2, Play and Arc Ultra as compatible models.
In Bray’s launch-period test, handoff between the Ace Ultra and a Move 2 or Beam Ultra took five to seven seconds and worked reliably when operated correctly. However, Apple Music sent over AirPlay or Bluetooth did not transfer as expected in his examples, and the interface did not explain why. Treat that as a report of the feature’s early-access behaviour at review time, not a guarantee of permanent compatibility or a complete statement of current support.

Sonos Ace Ultra vs Sony WH-1000XM6 vs AirPods Max 2
These are the UK prices and comparative judgments reported in Expert Reviews on 22 September 2026, not live quotes. Retail prices and product support can change.
| Headphones | Price in the review | Strengths and trade-offs reported | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonos Ace Ultra | £399 reviewed UK price | Fuller, bass-forward sound; comfort and build preferred by Bray; improved ANC over the original, though not as strong as the Sony or Apple alternatives. Reported battery life is 35 hours with ANC on. | Listeners who prioritise sound character and comfort enough to pay the premium. |
| Sony WH-1000XM6 | Typically £50 less than Ace Ultra at the review’s UK comparison point | Stronger noise cancellation and better mid-bass separation in complex mixes. The review says its battery life is five hours shorter than the Ace Ultra’s reported figure. | Buyers seeking lower cost and maximum noise reduction. |
| Apple AirPods Max 2 | £499 stated UK price in the review | Stronger noise cancellation than Ace Ultra, but greater weight and weaker battery life, according to the review. | iPhone users who prioritise sound and noise cancellation and accept those trade-offs. |
Should you buy the Sonos Ace Ultra?
Choose the Ace Ultra if its fuller sound and comfortable fit matter more to you than getting the strongest possible ANC for less money. Choose the Sony WH-1000XM6 if noise cancellation and value are your priorities. Consider the AirPods Max 2 if you are invested in an iPhone-centred setup and accept the extra weight, shorter battery life and higher review-context price. The Ace Ultra’s speaker handoff may add value for Sonos households, but the early-access limitations Bray encountered make it unwise to buy solely for that feature.
