For a repeatable close-up, set narrower x-, y-, and z-axis limits with ax.set_xlim(), ax.set_ylim(), and ax.set_zlim(). To zoom manually, right-click and drag vertically in an interactive Matplotlib backend. If you want to look at the points from another direction, change the camera with ax.view_init() instead; that changes the viewing angle, not the data range.

Set axis limits for a repeatable close-up

Axis limits define the intervals of data coordinates displayed along each axis. Narrowing those intervals focuses the view on a smaller region; it does not change the underlying values in your arrays.

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.add_subplot(projection="3d")
ax.scatter(xs, ys, zs)

# Replace these bounds with the region you want to inspect.
ax.set_xlim(xmin, xmax)
ax.set_ylim(ymin, ymax)
ax.set_zlim(zmin, zmax)

plt.show()

Use bounds that make sense for your data. For example, if a cluster lies between known x, y, and z values, set each axis to the interval surrounding that cluster. Applying all three limits gives a defined 3D region; setting only one or two leaves the other axes at their existing limits. The Matplotlib 3D scatterplot example shows the standard setup with fig.add_subplot(projection="3d") and ax.scatter(xs, ys, zs).

Set one limit or reverse an axis

Each limit method accepts two bounds as separate arguments or as a two-value tuple. For example, ax.set_xlim((xmin, xmax)) sets the x range. You can also pass bounds in reverse order to reverse that axis’s direction. See the Matplotlib APIs for x limits, y limits, and z limits.

Zoom with the mouse in an interactive figure

When the figure is open in an interactive GUI backend, right-click and drag vertically to zoom the 3D scene. Matplotlib’s default mplot3d mouse controls are left button to rotate, middle button to pan, and right button to zoom. These are 3D scene gestures; the 2D toolbar’s pan and zoom buttons are not the controls for manipulating the 3D scene. The defaults are documented in the mplot3d overview and Axes3D.mouse_init API.

If dragging does nothing, check that the figure is displayed in an interactive backend rather than a static rendering context. For saved images or repeatable output, set axis limits in code instead of relying on a mouse gesture.

Change the viewing angle without changing the range

Use ax.view_init() to change the camera orientation. Its elevation, azimuth, and roll arguments are angles in degrees:

ax.view_init(elev=25, azim=45, roll=0)

Choose angles that reveal a side or reduce overlap in the point cloud. Unlike axis limits, camera angles do not select a smaller interval of data to display. Matplotlib’s view_init API documents the arguments and the view angles guide explains rotation styles. In Matplotlib 3.10 and later, the default mouse rotation style is arcball; older releases can behave differently when mapping mouse movement to azimuth and elevation.

Distinguish zoom from aspect ratio and projection

A 3D plot is rendered as a 2D projection, so its apparent shape also depends on display geometry. set_box_aspect() changes the proportions of the axes box, while projection settings choose how the 3D scene is projected. These can improve presentation, but they do not replace setting limits when you need a particular data region.

Goal Control What it changes
Show a specific range of values set_xlim(), set_ylim(), set_zlim() Displayed axis bounds in data coordinates
Explore the scene manually Right-drag vertically in an interactive backend Interactive zoom of the 3D scene
See the points from another direction view_init() or mouse rotation Camera orientation
Change apparent axis proportions or projection set_box_aspect() or projection settings Display geometry or projection

Understand what axis-limit clipping does

Setting limits establishes the view range; clipping is a separate behavior. In the current Matplotlib gallery example, axlim_clip defaults to False. When it is True, a line segment with a vertex outside the view limits is hidden as a whole; the example describes the same behavior for 3D patches. See Clip the data to the axes view limits for the documented behavior.

What to expect from Matplotlib’s 3D tools

The Matplotlib development team describes mplot3d as a lightweight option included with Matplotlib, while noting that 3D plotting is less mature than the 2D case. This is a qualitative caveat, not a benchmark: the official overview does not quantify performance or feature differences.
