The camera starts automatically when a camera-enabled app or feature uses it; there is no separate camera switch. The green light beside the camera indicates it is active.
Open the MacBook camera

Open FaceTime or Photo Booth from Applications or Spotlight. Either built-in app can activate the built-in camera. Apple explains that the camera turns on when a camera-capable app or feature opens: Use the camera on Mac.

Look for the green indicator beside the camera. It lights while the camera is active and goes dark when camera use ends.

When you are finished, quit the app or feature using the camera. Apple says the camera and indicator turn off when all apps and features that can use it are closed or quit.

Give an app or website camera access
Allow a Mac app
When you first open a camera-capable third-party app, approve camera access if macOS prompts you. If you previously denied access, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and enable the app. Quit and reopen it if it does not recognize the permission change. See Apple’s camera privacy settings guide. Review an app’s privacy practices before granting access.
Allow a website in Safari
In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera, then choose the access setting you want for the site.

If the MacBook camera does not work
If FaceTime or another app cannot find or activate the built-in camera, work through these checks. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance is available in If the built-in camera isn’t working on your Mac.

Check app permission. In System Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera, make sure the app is enabled; then quit and reopen it if needed.

Check Screen Time restrictions. On macOS Catalina or later, review System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy > App Restrictions and confirm camera use is allowed. Wording can vary by macOS version. Also check whether an App Limit affects the app.

Update macOS, then restart the Mac. Apple recommends updating macOS. Its restart guidance differs by Mac: restart an Apple silicon Mac; for an Intel Mac, Apple recommends resetting the SMC.

Test in another app. If the issue is in FaceTime, open Photo Booth to see whether the built-in camera works there. In FaceTime, use the Video menu to select the intended camera if more than one is connected. If no camera is listed, FaceTime uses the built-in camera.

Consider service if the problem persists. Apple says service may be needed if the built-in camera still fails or its indicator flashes green.

Use an iPhone instead with Continuity Camera
If you want to use your iPhone as the webcam in a compatible Mac app, set it up with Continuity Camera. Apple’s instructions call for placing the iPhone in a stable position near the Mac; it can connect wirelessly or by USB. A compatible mount or stand is optional for this setup and is not needed to activate the MacBook’s built-in camera.
Improve the camera image
If the camera works but the picture looks poor, Apple recommends gently wiping it with a soft, lint-free cloth and improving the lighting in front of you. See Apple’s Mac camera guidance.
