Use my_list.pop(index) to remove an item by position and keep the removed value, or del my_list[index] to remove it without keeping a return value. Python list indices start at 0.
Remove an item by index with pop() or del
For example, index 1 selects the second item:
items = ["apple", "banana", "cherry"]
removed = items.pop(1)
print(items) # ["apple", "cherry"]
print(removed) # "banana"pop(index) changes the list and returns the removed item. Use del when you only need to delete the position:
items = ["apple", "banana", "cherry"]
del items[1]
print(items) # ["apple", "cherry"]The official Python 3.14.8 data structures tutorial documents both forms and distinguishes del, a statement, from pop, which returns the removed value.
Choose the operation that matches your goal

remove() is not an index-based operation. For example, items.remove("banana") searches for that value and removes its first match. It raises ValueError if no equal item exists.

Understand indices and out-of-range errors
Lists use zero-based indexing: items[0] is the first item, and items[1] is the second. A negative index counts from the end, so items.pop(-1) removes and returns the last item. Calling items.pop() without an index also removes and returns the last item.
pop() raises IndexError if the list is empty or the requested index is outside the valid range. If an invalid index is an expected condition in your program, handle that case deliberately; otherwise, validate the index or let the exception reveal a bug.

Remove multiple indexed items without targeting the wrong positions
Each deletion changes the positions of items after it. If you must delete several known indices from the same list, delete them in descending order so removing a lower index does not shift a higher index before you reach it.
items = ["a", "b", "c", "d", "e"]
for index in sorted([1, 3], reverse=True):
del items[index]
print(items) # ["a", "c", "e"]When the items to remove are defined by a condition rather than fixed positions, building a new list with the items you want to keep can be clearer than repeatedly deleting positions.

Consider shifting costs for frequent deletions
Deleting from a Python list can require shifting later items to fill the gap. The CPython built-in types time-complexity reference lists indexed pop and item deletion as O(n – k), where n is the current list size and k is the index. Removing an early item can therefore involve more shifting than removing one near the end. For ordinary single deletions, pop and del are the straightforward choices; when a workload frequently adds or removes items at both ends, the reference recommends considering collections.deque.
