You can back up an iPhone to iCloud or to a Mac or Windows PC. For a hands-off option, turn on automatic iCloud Backup. For a local copy, use Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, depending on your computer and software. Here are six workflows, plus how to confirm a backup finished and what to try if it fails.
Choose where to save your iPhone backup

A backup is a copy you can use if your iPhone is replaced, lost, or damaged. It is not necessarily a byte-for-byte copy of everything on the phone. Apple describes iCloud backups as including information and settings that do not regularly sync to iCloud, such as device settings, Home Screen layout, and app organization. Items that sync separately may not be duplicated in the backup. For details on specific items, see Apple’s What does iCloud back up? and its encrypted backup information.
1. Start an iCloud backup manually
- Connect your iPhone to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Tap Back Up Now and stay connected to Wi-Fi until the process finishes.
- Check the date and time shown for the last backup beneath the control.
If you see an alert that there is not enough iCloud storage, follow the storage options shown on your iPhone. There is no single storage amount that suits everyone; the space needed depends on the data being backed up.
2. Turn on automatic iCloud Backup
- Open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud > iCloud Backup.
- Turn on Back Up This iPhone.
- For an automatic backup, connect the iPhone to power and Wi-Fi and leave its screen locked. Check the last-backup date and time on the same screen to confirm a backup has completed.
Apple’s iPhone guide says that supported 5G models may offer a carrier setting for backup over cellular. Whether you see that option depends on your iPhone and carrier settings; Wi-Fi remains the standard documented condition for automatic backup.

3. Back up with Finder on current macOS
Use Finder if your Mac runs macOS Catalina 10.15 or later. You will need a cable compatible with both the iPhone and the Mac; use the supplied cable if it fits.
- Connect the iPhone to your Mac and open Finder.
- Select the iPhone in the Finder sidebar. If prompted, unlock the phone and choose to trust the computer.
- In the device’s general backup controls, choose the option to back up all of the iPhone’s data to the Mac.
- To include Health and Activity data, select Encrypt local backup and create a password. Store that password somewhere safe: Apple warns that a forgotten password cannot be recovered from the backup, making that backup unusable for restore.
- Click Back Up Now. When it finishes, check Finder’s status and the displayed date and time of the latest backup.
4. Back up with iTunes on older macOS
Apple directs users with macOS Mojave or earlier to iTunes rather than Finder.

- Connect the iPhone to the Mac, open iTunes, and select the device when it appears.
- Open the device’s Summary view and choose Back Up Now.
- If Health and Activity data must be included, enable encrypted backup and set a password you can keep safe. A forgotten password prevents use of that encrypted backup for restore.
- Check the device summary for the latest backup date and time after iTunes finishes.
5. Back up with Apple Devices on Windows
- Open the Apple Devices app on your Windows PC and connect the iPhone with a compatible cable.
- Select the iPhone in the app and open its General backup controls.
- Choose the option to back up all of the iPhone’s data to the PC. Turn on Encrypt local backup if you need to save Health and Activity data, then keep the password safe.
- Choose Back Up Now. Verify completion and the latest backup date and time in the app.
6. Back up with iTunes on Windows
If you do not use Apple Devices, or your Windows workflow is in iTunes, back up through the iPhone’s device entry there.
- Connect the iPhone to the PC and open iTunes. Select the iPhone when it appears.
- Open Summary and choose Back Up Now.
- Enable encrypted backup if you need Health and Activity data, and keep the password safe. Apple says a forgotten encryption password makes that backup unusable for restore.
- After the backup completes, check iTunes for the latest backup date and time.
If a backup will not complete
iCloud says storage is insufficient
Use the storage prompt on the iPhone to review the available options. The required space varies with the data on the device, so a universal backup-size figure would be misleading. Apple’s iCloud backup support page explains the on-device process.

A computer backup fails, stalls, or never appears
- Update the computer’s operating system and Apple software.
- Check that the iPhone appears in Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes, as appropriate.
- Restart both the iPhone and the computer, then try again.
- If the computer reports insufficient space, free disk space and retry.
- Try another computer or use iCloud as an alternative.
- On Windows, security software can interfere when iTunes hangs or a backup does not finish.
