Reliable Polymarket automation depends on more than getting an order accepted: the bot must use the right data for each job, act on current executable prices, track orders through settlement, and fail safely when its inputs or connections change. The nine failures below are an engineering checklist, not a ranking of the most common mistakes—and avoiding them does not make a trading strategy profitable.

1. Using the wrong API for the job

Polymarket’s API families serve different purposes. Gamma is for discovering markets, events, and metadata; the CLOB is for order books, prices, and orders; the Data API is oriented to positions and account activity. WebSockets carry current market updates and authenticated user updates. Treating these interfaces as interchangeable can produce stale or mismatched data, or cause a bot to submit an order using the wrong schema or identifier.

  • Typical symptom: a market appears in discovery results but the bot cannot find a matching book, or an order or position lookup uses an identifier from the wrong context.
  • Prevent it: make each service’s role explicit in the architecture. Keep International, US, and Perps assumptions separate unless the current documentation confirms compatibility; do not assume their endpoints, credentials, or identifiers are interchangeable.
  • Verify it: trace one market from discovery through book retrieval, order submission, and position checking in a test workflow. Confirm that each step uses the expected service, schema, and identifier before enabling live orders. Polymarket’s order quickstart and real-time data documentation describe different parts of that workflow.

2. Trading from a display price instead of an executable book

A displayed probability or last-traded price is not a promise that an order can trade at that price. The executable price depends on the live order book and the order’s side: a buyer evaluates asks, while a seller evaluates bids. Using a display price as an order instruction can make a bot misjudge likely fills or slippage.

  • Typical symptom: the bot’s expected fill price differs from the price available when it submits, or an order remains unfilled despite a seemingly favorable display price.
  • Prevent it: retrieve current CLOB book data for the relevant market and inspect the correct side before estimating execution. Treat the displayed probability and last price as context, not as a substitute for available depth.
  • Verify it: log the book snapshot and timestamp used for each decision, then compare the intended limit price with the available asks for a buy or bids for a sell at submission time. Do not infer execution quality from the displayed probability alone.

3. Identifying markets by title or stale identifiers

Titles are useful for people scanning a list, but they are poor keys for software: wording can be ambiguous or change, and discovery responses can be paginated. A bot that relies on a title or an old identifier may read or trade the wrong market, or act after the market’s status or rules have changed.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Typical symptom: a lookup returns multiple plausible matches, an expected market disappears from a partial discovery response, or an order targets a market whose current status no longer matches the bot’s assumptions.
  • Prevent it: use stable market and token identifiers; validate response schemas rather than assuming fields never change; paginate discovery results; and confirm current activity, rules, and status before acting.
  • Verify it: test discovery against markets with similar titles and across multiple pages of results. Before order submission, assert that the resolved identifiers and current market status match the bot’s intended market.

4. Conflating signing, API credentials, and wallet roles

Wallet signing, HMAC request authentication, and the signature attached to an order are distinct security layers. The wallet that signs may also differ from the funder or proxy wallet associated with the account. Treating these as a single credential can cause authentication failures, invalid orders, or funds and activity to be attributed differently than expected.

  • Typical symptom: authenticated requests fail even though a wallet is configured, an order is rejected, or the bot checks the wrong wallet for the resulting position.
  • Prevent it: configure the signer, request-authentication credentials, and funder or proxy relationship according to the account setup and current SDK. Keep private signing material local; never place it in source control, logs, endpoints, or support messages.
  • Verify it: in a non-live workflow, confirm which credential authenticates each request, which wallet signs the order, and which account the funder or proxy setting represents. Review logs to ensure they record useful identifiers and outcomes without exposing secrets. Polymarket’s order quickstart is a starting point for checking the documented order flow.

5. Mixing old SDK examples with current clients

Code copied from an older SDK generation may use different method names, schemas, or signer and funder handling than a current client. Polymarket’s documentation identifies @polymarket/client for TypeScript and polymarket-client for Python as unified clients in the documented setup; package names and recommendations can change.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Typical symptom: examples compile only after improvised changes, a method behaves differently from the documentation, or an order fails because one part of the program expects an older request format.
  • Prevent it: choose one client generation, pin and review dependencies, and follow its migration guidance rather than combining code snippets from different generations. Re-check the current documentation and package version before deployment.
  • Verify it: build a small integration test using the pinned dependency: initialize the client, retrieve the intended market data, and validate an order payload without submitting a live order. Confirm the test still matches the client’s current documented examples.

6. Ignoring dynamic metadata such as tick size, fees, and market status

Market constraints and status are inputs to order construction, not permanent constants to copy into code. If a bot keeps using old assumptions about tick size, fees, or whether a market is active, it can form invalid orders or make decisions using constraints that no longer apply.

  • Typical symptom: an order is rejected or rounded unexpectedly, or the bot attempts to act on a market whose status has changed.
  • Prevent it: validate live market metadata before acting. Where appropriate, subscribe to real-time changes and refresh critical constraints when a market update or order workflow signals that they may have changed.
  • Verify it: test that the bot reads the current metadata before order construction and handles a changed constraint or inactive status by pausing or rebuilding the decision, rather than silently reusing cached values.

7. Treating a match as a final settled position

A matched order and a settled on-chain position are not necessarily the same state. Polymarket’s quickstart says a matched trade settles on-chain asynchronously and demonstrates waiting for settlement before checking the resulting position. If a bot sizes follow-up actions as though a match were already final, its view of exposure can be wrong.

  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • Typical symptom: the order reports a match, but an immediate position check does not yet show the expected settled position.
  • Prevent it: model matching and settlement as separate states. Do not treat a match as a final position or size dependent follow-up actions until settlement has been confirmed.
  • Verify it: test the order lifecycle so the bot waits for a settlement indication and then checks the resulting position before advancing any workflow that depends on it.

An independent 2026 preprint by Yiming Shen, Yuhan Jin, Shuohan Wu, Yanlin Wang, and Jiachi Chen, “The Ghosts of Polymarket: When Off-Chain Matches Meet On-Chain Reverts”, analyzes 1,952,440 reverted match-order transactions and attributes 980,133 filled orders to identified attack vectors in its analyzed set. The authors report that more than 24.3% of filled orders reverted during peak hours under the paper’s definitions, sample, and period; they also say the issue was partially mitigated at the time of writing. These are study-specific findings from a preprint, not a general bot failure rate or a current official incident rate.

8. Polling through throttling or losing stream state

API limits are not one universal fixed quota. Polymarket documents endpoint-specific, IP-based sliding-window limits alongside separate per-signer trading limits. A bot that polls too aggressively can be throttled; a bot that relies on a stream without recovery logic can miss updates after a disconnect. The rate-limit documentation and real-time data documentation cover these different operational concerns.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Typical symptom: requests begin failing or slowing under load, or the bot’s local view diverges from the market after its stream reconnects.
  • Prevent it: use bounded concurrency, caching, and backoff; check the current limits for each endpoint and account for per-signer trading constraints. Use WebSockets when suitable for frequent updates rather than repeatedly polling. On a disconnect, reconnect and refresh a snapshot before resuming incremental event processing.
  • Verify it: exercise throttling and disconnect recovery in a controlled test. Confirm that backoff is bounded, that a fresh snapshot is obtained after reconnect, and that the bot does not assume no events were missed while it was offline.

9. Launching without safety controls, observability, or location checks

Automation needs controls that can limit or stop activity and records that make it possible to reconstruct what happened. The Polymarket US Rulebook dated May 19, 2026, section 5.2(i), states: “Participants utilizing automated trading systems must implement pre-trade risk controls including order throttles, price collars, and kill switches.” The rulebook is specific to Polymarket US; its requirements should not be treated as automatically governing International or Perps products.

  • Typical symptom: the bot continues submitting after an unexpected price or system condition, or an operator cannot reconstruct why an order was entered, changed, canceled, or executed.
  • Prevent it: implement order throttles, price collars, a kill switch, and an audit log sufficient to reconstruct entries, modifications, cancellations, and executions. Check the applicable product and location rules before trading; API access does not bypass restrictions.
  • Verify it: test that the throttle limits order activity, the collar blocks orders outside configured bounds, and the kill switch stops new activity. Reconstruct a test order lifecycle from the audit log, and confirm that the product and location have been checked against the rules that apply to the account. See the Polymarket US Rulebook (2026.05.19).

What to check before enabling live orders

Use this as a release gate, not as a claim that the strategy itself has an edge. The architecture should separate discovery, execution, account data, and streaming responsibilities; order decisions should use current book data and market metadata; and the bot should distinguish a match from settlement. Operationally, test identifier validation, throttling, reconnect recovery, audit reconstruction, and the kill path before live use. Re-check Polymarket’s current documentation because interfaces, limits, and client recommendations can change.
