Kestra CVE-2026-49869 is a critical authentication-bypass flaw in Kestra OSS. The vendor lists Kestra 1.0.45 and 1.3.21 as fixed; versions through 1.3.20 are affected. The flaw let unauthenticated attackers reach routes that should have required Basic Auth, create and execute workflows, and achieve remote code execution inside the Kestra worker container. Operators should verify their release branch and upgrade to a vendor-fixed version.
What went wrong in Kestra’s authentication check?
Kestra OSS’s AuthenticationFilter included a Basic Auth exception for public configuration endpoints. Its path check used request.getPath().endsWith("/configs"). That test did not establish that a request was actually to the intended public endpoint: unrelated API routes ending in /configs could also match and bypass authentication.
The intended exception included GET /api/v1/configs and tenant-scoped configuration paths. The vendor advisory explains that the suffix check also matched unrelated API resources whose final path component was configs, allowing those routes to skip authentication. Kestra’s GitHub security advisory describes the flaw as a suffix match rather than an exact path match.
The underlying design lesson is that an authorization exception should identify the intended route precisely, taking the route structure and HTTP method into account. A shared final path segment is not proof that two requests have the same authorization requirements.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What could an attacker do?
According to the vendor advisory, a remote attacker without credentials could create and execute arbitrary workflows. The advisory says default-enabled script plugins, including shell and Python, could be used to run operating-system commands, resulting in remote code execution as root inside the Kestra worker Docker container.
That scope matters: the vendor describes execution inside the worker container, not confirmed control of the host. The advisory notes that the worker container lacks CAP_SYS_ADMIN and has no mounted Docker socket; it says a direct escape through a Docker socket was not confirmed.

The advisory also lists possible server-side request forgery (SSRF), unauthorized create/read/update/delete operations against resources named configs, potential cloud credential theft through metadata access, and audit-log deletion. These are consequences identified by the advisory, not evidence that every impact occurred in a real incident.
Which Kestra versions are affected, and which are fixed?
Kestra’s advisory rates CVE-2026-49869 Critical, with a CVSS 3.1 base score of 10.0 and vector AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H. Its stated affected range is <= 1.3.20, and it lists 1.0.45 and 1.3.21 as patched. See the vendor advisory for its version guidance.

Check Point’s 3 September 2026 advisory phrases the vulnerable ranges differently, describing versions up to 1.0.45 and Kestra 1.1.0 onward before 1.3.21. Because that wording conflicts with Kestra’s explicit listing of 1.0.45 as patched, do not treat 1.0.45 as vulnerable solely on the basis of Check Point’s shorthand. For a 1.0.x deployment, verify the precise fixed patch against Kestra’s release guidance and the branch you run.
How should operators respond?
- Identify the running release. Check the version of the Kestra instance that is actually deployed, not just the version in a local package or deployment manifest.
- Match it to the correct release branch. Use Kestra’s advisory and release guidance to establish whether that exact version is affected or fixed, especially for 1.0.x installations.
- Upgrade to a vendor-fixed version. The advisory lists 1.0.45 and 1.3.21 as fixed. Select the appropriate patched release for your branch and follow Kestra’s deployment guidance.
- If an upgrade must wait, reduce exposure. Restrict network access to the Kestra service and review authentication and workflow activity for unexpected changes or executions. These are interim defensive measures; they do not repair the vulnerable authorization check.
- Review supplementary detection coverage. Check Point says its Security Gateway IPS can detect exploit attempts when the latest IPS update is installed. Treat this as an additional control, not a substitute for upgrading Kestra.
What does this flaw teach about authorization?
Authorization exceptions are especially risky when they are implemented as broad path shortcuts. A suffix check answers only whether a string ends with a particular segment; it does not confirm the request’s complete route, method, tenant context, or intended access policy. In this case, the mismatch between a narrow public configuration exception and a broad suffix test expanded unauthenticated access to unrelated API resources.

For route-based access control, match the full intended endpoint and constrain the exception to the methods and route structure that genuinely need it. Then test both the permitted route and nearby routes that share a path suffix, so a convenience exception cannot silently become an authentication bypass.

The vendor advisory documents the vulnerability and its potential impacts; the materials cited here do not establish specific incident activity, exploit prevalence, or a count of affected installations. OpenCVE’s surfaced record reports a CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) addition date of 2 September 2026, but a primary CISA catalog record was not verified here. That date should therefore not be treated as confirmed government status or as a remediation deadline.
