Secret-Scrub is presented by its author, Adil, as a zero-dependency Node.js command-line tool that looks for likely credentials in files and staged Git changes. It combines recognizable provider-format signatures with Shannon entropy analysis, and can be installed as a local pre-commit hook. That hook can help catch a suspected secret before a commit, but it is only one layer: Git does not copy client-side hooks when someone clones a repository, and a local check does not replace scanning repository history or responding to a credential that has already been exposed.

What Secret-Scrub is designed to do

Adil describes Secret-Scrub as an open-source CLI for finding credentials that might otherwise be committed to Git. The article says it is written for Node.js, has no dependencies, and is released under the MIT license. Those are the author’s claims; the linked repository and current package release could not be independently verified.

The article lists examples of formats the scanner is intended to recognize: AWS access keys, GitHub personal access tokens, Stripe keys, OpenAI keys, Slack webhooks, Google API keys, JWTs, and PEM private keys. It also describes coverage for “18+ Cloud Providers.” That count is not independently audited, and the article does not establish the tool’s complete rule set or its current support across platforms.

How its detection approach works

Provider signatures

Signature matching searches for patterns associated with recognizable credential formats. A match can flag a string that resembles a known provider’s key or token. This is a pattern-based warning, not proof that a value is active or valid.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Shannon entropy analysis

For strings without a recognized provider prefix, the article says Secret-Scrub uses Shannon entropy analysis to identify values that appear unusually random. This can help surface unknown-looking secrets, but randomness alone does not establish that a string is a credential. The article does not provide an audited accuracy rate, false-positive rate, or full account of the entropy thresholds and rules.

The two methods are intended to complement each other: signatures target known-looking formats, while entropy analysis may flag suspicious strings that do not fit those formats.

Commands described in the article

Adil gives these examples for invoking the tool with npx:

Purpose Command What the article says it does
Scan a directory npx secret-scrub . Scans the current directory.
Scan staged changes npx secret-scrub --staged Reads git diff --cached to focus on changes queued for commit.
Request JSON output npx secret-scrub . --format json Scans the current directory and formats the output as JSON.

These commands document the article’s usage examples; they have not been independently tested against a current package release. The article reports staged scanning takes “less than 40 milliseconds.” That is Adil’s author-reported figure, not an independently established benchmark: no reproducible workload or measurement conditions are supplied.

Installing the described pre-commit hook

The article gives npx secret-scrub install-hook as the installation command. It says this installs a native .git/hooks/pre-commit hook that aborts a commit when a suspected secret is detected. The command and behavior are described by the author and have not been independently verified here.

Git recognizes pre-commit as a hook event in its official hooks documentation. A local hook can check staged changes at commit time, but teams must plan how it is installed and maintained: client-side hooks are not copied automatically when a repository is cloned, as Pro Git explains.

Where a local hook fits in a secret-prevention workflow

A pre-commit scanner aims to stop a suspected credential before it enters a commit. Repository-history scanning addresses a different point: GitHub says its secret scanning scans Git history for hardcoded credentials. A local hook does not provide that broader history coverage, and it cannot undo an exposure that has already happened.

  • Before committing: a locally installed hook can flag staged content, according to the Secret-Scrub article.
  • Across repository history: hosted scanning can inspect committed history, as described in GitHub’s secret-scanning documentation.
  • Across a team: because cloning does not distribute client-side hooks, teams need a deliberate installation approach rather than assuming every contributor has the check enabled.

Secret-Scrub is one approach among local checks. The pre-commit-hooks project, for example, documents checks for AWS credentials and private keys, with installation through the pre-commit framework or as a standalone package. That context does not establish a feature or performance comparison between the projects.

What is and is not established

The published article presents a useful outline of the tool’s intended scope and commands, but several details remain unverified because the linked repository could not be inspected. It does not establish the current npm publication or release status, exact dependency count, supported platforms, complete provider rules, entropy thresholds, test coverage, or reproducible performance. Treat implementation details and product claims as descriptions from Adil’s article, not independently confirmed behavior.

For evaluating any secret scanner for a team, the relevant questions include what it scans (staged changes, working files, history, or hosted repositories), how it is installed and distributed, which credential formats and custom rules it supports, how it handles false positives, what output and CI integrations it offers, and how it performs on a comparable workload. The available information does not support a comprehensive current tool comparison.
