Start with the browser-based GAN Lab for visual intuition; continue with the official DCGAN tutorial for your preferred framework. Save courses and the original paper for when you have the necessary machine-learning background.
What should you learn first?
A GAN trains two neural networks together. The generator produces candidate samples; the discriminator tries to distinguish generated samples from real training examples. Their adversarial interaction is the central idea, but seeing it in motion is often easier than starting with equations.
1. Explore GAN Lab before installing anything
GAN Lab is a browser-based interactive visualization created to help non-experts explore generative models. You can train simple models, inspect intermediate results and the generator/discriminator structure, and manipulate training parameters. It runs without installation or specialized hardware, making it a low-friction way to build intuition.
Use it to understand the dynamics, not as a replacement for implementing an image GAN in a machine-learning framework. Its simple interactive models do not teach the complete workflow for training modern image models.

Which coding tutorial should you follow?
Once the basic roles of generator and discriminator make sense, work through one Deep Convolutional GAN (DCGAN) implementation. Choose based on the framework you want to learn; you do not need to follow both tutorials at once.
| Resource | Format and example | Best fit and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| TensorFlow DCGAN tutorial | Official worked tutorial using TensorFlow and MNIST digit images. | Choose it if you want a step-by-step TensorFlow implementation. It explains random-noise input, generated images, discriminator classification, losses, and model updates. The page states it was last updated 2024-08-16. |
| PyTorch DCGAN tutorial | Official worked tutorial using PyTorch and a faces dataset. | Choose it if you want a PyTorch implementation. It covers model initialization, the generator and discriminator, losses, and the training loop. The current page is part of PyTorch Tutorials 2.14.0+cu130. |
What to pay attention to in the walkthrough
- Trace how random input becomes a generated sample and how the discriminator evaluates it.
- Follow the losses and update steps for both networks; a GAN is a training process, not just a generator architecture.
- In the TensorFlow example, observe how generated digits change over training. The tutorial suggests larger datasets as a next experiment.
When are a course or conceptual tutorial useful?
Courses can connect implementation details to the broader ideas and challenges, but their prerequisites differ. Check the expected background and current access terms before enrolling.

Goodfellow’s NIPS tutorial
Ian Goodfellow’s NIPS 2016 GAN tutorial provides a more detailed conceptual treatment of generative modeling, GAN mechanics, connections to other generative models, and selected research directions, with exercises. It explicitly is not a comprehensive literature review, so treat it as a foundation rather than a complete map of GAN research.
What options support longer-term study?

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you read the original GAN paper?
After you have some neural-network context, read Goodfellow and colleagues’ 2014 paper introducing GANs. It formulates training a generative model and a discriminator together as an adversarial minimax game. The formal presentation is more rewarding once you can connect its terms to the generator, discriminator, and losses you have already encountered.

A simple route through the resources
- Use GAN Lab to explore the generator/discriminator interaction visually.
- Complete either the TensorFlow or PyTorch DCGAN tutorial, choosing the framework that matches your goals.
- For structured instruction, choose a course that matches your background; use Goodfellow’s NIPS tutorial if you prefer a conceptual reading with exercises.
- For sustained study, add GANs in Action or explore Stanford CS236G, checking current book availability and course-material access.
- Return to the original paper to study the formal adversarial formulation.
As you go beyond a first implementation, remember that plausible-looking samples are not the only concern. Evaluation, bias, and training stability are also part of understanding GANs; Stanford’s course outline explicitly includes these issues.
