To implement deep linking in React Native, configure the operating system to deliver supported URLs to your app, then use React Navigation’s linking configuration to map those URLs to screens. Handle both cold starts and links received while the app is running, and validate incoming route data before acting on it.
Choose URL formats that match how people will use your links
A deep link is an external URL that opens app content. A URL such as https://app.example.com/records/123 can identify a record while still being a normal web address. Decide which destinations are shareable, whether they require sign-in, and what the website should display if the app does not open. Keep secrets and authorization decisions out of URLs.

The two formats can coexist. Choose based on the sharing context, whether you control the domain, and whether a web fallback is important; neither is universally best for every app.
Handle links on both cold starts and active sessions
React Native’s Linking API exposes two incoming-link cases. When a link launches the app, the app can obtain it with Linking.getInitialURL(). When the app is already running, it can receive a url event through Linking.addEventListener('url', callback). A navigation library can coordinate these paths so the app does not need duplicate URL parsing logic.

React Native also documents native forwarding for iOS URL opens and Universal Link user activities. On Android, its guide notes that MainActivity may use launchMode="singleTask" when an existing activity should receive an intent. Native project structures and requirements vary by workflow and version, so check the current platform documentation and the template for your project before copying native snippets.
Map URLs to React Navigation screens
Use React Navigation’s linking integration to declare supported prefixes and map URL paths to routes. Its configuration guide covers path mapping, nested navigators, and parameter parsing. For example, a prefix for https://app.example.com and a route pattern for records/:id can map https://app.example.com/records/123 to a record screen with an id parameter.

React Navigation recommends its linking prop instead of manually routing through a navigation ref: “We don’t recommend handling deep links yourself using a ref as it can be error-prone and significantly more complicated.” Its integration uses React Native’s Linking module on mobile and also supports web URL integration where applicable.
Make route behavior part of the app’s contract
- Define supported prefixes and paths explicitly; do not assume every URL reaching the app is valid.
- Decide what happens when a required identifier is missing or malformed, such as showing a safe not-found screen.
- Keep public paths stable enough that previously shared links continue to resolve as routes evolve.
- Route accessibility is not authorization: enforce sign-in and permission checks before exposing protected content or initiating actions.
Configure native delivery for HTTPS links
JavaScript route mapping does not configure iOS or Android to open the app for a URL. Domain-associated links need platform configuration and a matching association published by the website.

iOS Universal Links
Enable the Associated Domains capability and add the appropriate applinks: domain entitlement. Host the website association document for the domain and app. Apple describes Universal Links as a way to link directly to app content and connect an app with a website; see Apple’s Universal Links documentation.
Android App Links
Declare an HTTPS VIEW intent filter for the intended host, including the required categories, and enable verification as appropriate for the project. Publish the Digital Asset Links association file on the website so Android can verify the relationship between the domain and app. Check the current requirements for your target SDK in Android’s App Links documentation.

Expo and bare React Native projects
In Expo projects, platform configuration is expressed in app configuration, including iOS associatedDomains and Android intentFilters; the website association files are still required for verified HTTPS links. React Navigation’s Expo example illustrates those settings. Bare React Native projects make the corresponding changes in their iOS and Android project files. Use the configuration appropriate to your workflow and installed SDK version.
Validate incoming URLs before using them
A deep link brings data from outside the app. Treat its path, query values, and identifiers as untrusted input. Validate that a route is supported and that each parameter has the expected format before using it to select content or trigger behavior. Then enforce authorization independently; a route or query parameter is not proof that the user may access the requested resource. React Native’s security guidance describes the deep-link mechanism, while the app must define its own validation and permission checks.

Test the installed app on both platforms
- Rebuild and install after native changes. Changes to schemes, entitlements, intent filters, or associated domains require a rebuilt native app. React Navigation explicitly advises rebuilding and installing before testing.
- Test a cold start. Close the app, open a representative link, and confirm it reaches the intended screen.
- Test an active session. Open the app first, then deliver another link and confirm it is handled without relying on the initial-URL path.
- Exercise route inputs. Try valid, missing, malformed, and unexpected parameters; confirm each reaches the intended screen or a safe fallback.
- Check domain association and fallback behavior. Test HTTPS links on iOS and Android, then check what the website does when the app is not available. Results depend on the domain and platform configuration.
- Check accepted origins. Confirm the app responds only to the schemes and domains you intended to support, and that data from those links is validated.
These checks should be performed on installed builds: JavaScript configuration alone cannot demonstrate that native URL delivery and domain association are working.
