Linux Mint’s appeal to Windows users is practical: it offers a familiar desktop approach alongside graphical tools for installing software, managing updates, and creating system snapshots. That can make it a reasonable alternative to explore, but it does not make Windows applications or devices automatically compatible. If you are considering a switch, check your essential apps and hardware first, then try Mint from bootable media before replacing your current system.
Why Linux Mint can feel approachable to Windows users
Linux Mint describes itself as a modern, comfortable desktop and says many of its users come from Windows. Its project home page promotes centralized software updates and system snapshots as part of its maintenance approach. Those are the project’s own claims, not the result of an independent survey or comparative test. Linux Mint project home page
The likely draw is a combination: a desktop organized around familiar computer-use patterns, graphical setup and maintenance tools, and the option to try a different operating system. Familiarity can ease the transition, but Mint is still Linux—not a Windows replacement that guarantees every old application, game, or peripheral will work unchanged.
Check your must-have apps and hardware before switching
Make a short list of the things you cannot afford to lose: work applications, specialist software, games, printers, scanners, Wi-Fi adapters, and other peripherals. Check whether each has a Linux version or documented support for your exact device. If a critical workflow depends on a Windows-only application or an unusual peripheral, test that workflow before wiping or repartitioning a Windows installation.

Try Mint without committing your computer
The official documentation page links to the Linux Mint Installation Guide and User Guide. The installation guide explains how to select an ISO, create bootable media, and install the system. - Read the guide for your chosen setup. Use the official Installation Guide rather than guessing at partitioning or installation choices.
- Create bootable media. Follow the guide’s steps to select the ISO and prepare the drive.
- Test the computer’s essentials. Before installing, check that the devices and workflows you care about behave as needed. A successful test of one component does not prove that every application or peripheral is compatible.
- Back up personal files. Make a separate copy of documents and other files you cannot replace before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
- Choose installation options deliberately. The guide covers installing multimedia codecs during setup and enabling full-disk encryption. Consider which options fit your needs before proceeding.
The guide estimates a base operating-system footprint of roughly 15 GB, excluding additional software and personal data. It recommends giving the installation partition adequate room and uses 100 GB or more as its recommendation; 15 GB is not a suggested total disk allocation. Linux Mint Installation Guide
Understand Mint’s update and recovery tools
Linux Mint’s Update Manager handles system and software updates, while Timeshift is a utility for system snapshots. Snapshots can help recover the system after a problem, but they are not a substitute for a separate backup of your personal files. The User Guide also warns that kernel changes can introduce regressions. Linux Mint Update Manager guide

This is a different maintenance workflow from Windows, so learn what each tool does rather than treating “snapshot” and “backup” as interchangeable. Keep personal-file backups somewhere separate from the system installation, and approach kernel changes with the possibility of hardware or system regressions in mind.

Who should try Linux Mint?
Mint is worth exploring if you want a different desktop operating system, are comfortable learning a new software and update workflow, and can verify that your important applications and devices work. Start by testing it with bootable media and following the official guide if you decide to install.
If a Windows-only application, game, or peripheral is essential, do not make a full switch until you have confirmed a workable solution for that specific need. The Linux Mint project says, “Most of our users come from Windows and they never look back,” but that is promotional wording on the project’s home page—not a measured switching statistic or a promise that every user will have the same experience.
