FontStruct lets you build a font by drawing individual characters with geometric bricks on a grid, then download the result as a TrueType font. You do not need to upload finished lettering: each glyph is constructed in the browser-based FontStructor editor.

How to make a font in FontStruct

  1. Open FontStructor and start a new FontStruction. The first active character is the Latin letter A. Use the character selector to choose another glyph or character set.
  2. Choose a brick. FontStructor offers geometric building blocks; the default is a square brick.
  3. Choose a drawing tool and build the glyph. The pen tool is selected by default. Click the grid canvas to place bricks. The horizontal blue line marks the baseline; the vertical blue line marks the glyph’s left side.
  4. Repeat for the characters you need. Use Preview to type with completed characters and check how they look together.
  5. Save regularly. FontStruct’s quick-start guide says, “Always remember to save your work regularily, using the "Save" button at the top of the edit screen.”
  6. Download the font. Select Download to get a ZIP containing the TrueType font and licensing information. Extract the ZIP before installing the font.

For more control, FontStruct’s help index includes guides to editing letters, rotating and flipping shapes, filters, spacing, kerning, and Expert Mode: FontStruct help.

What FontStruct creates—and when to use it

The standard Download option provides a TrueType font. FontStruct says TrueType files can be installed and used on most computers and edited in desktop font editors. Each FontStruction also has a scalable vector outline, while FontStruct describes the editor as optimized for pixel fonts, too.

For a pixel-font workflow, use only the default square brick, inspect the Pixel Preview, and check the downloaded read-me for optimal sizing information.

Exporting for further editing

FontStructor also offers Export > Glyphs, which creates a .glyphs file for Glyphs.app on Mac. FontStruct says the export includes the individual bricks and can be edited further in Glyphs.app, including with advanced features available there. FontStruct’s documentation does not establish Glyphs.app’s current price or partner-program terms.

Can you make a font from your handwriting?

You can draw handwriting-inspired letterforms in FontStructor, but you cannot upload a scan and have FontStruct convert it into a font. Every glyph must be built on the grid. FontStruct’s FAQ recommends Fontself for readers whose specific goal is turning scanned handwriting into a font; that is FontStruct’s recommendation, not a comparison of the products.

Adjust spacing before adding kerning

FontStruct automatically spaces letters and supplies a space character. Its defaults add one grid square of width beyond the drawn glyph, while default global spacing is zero. These are editor settings, not fixed measurements of the finished font.

  • Adjust an individual glyph’s width when a particular character needs more or less room.
  • Change global spacing to affect spacing across the font; FontStruct’s help notes that negative global spacing is possible.
  • Choose monospacing if every character should occupy the same width.

Kerning adjusts the spacing of specific letter pairs. FontStruct makes it available in Expert Mode, but advises trying width and global spacing controls first; many designs do not need pair-specific kerning.

Privacy, sharing, and font licenses

New FontStructions are private by default. Only shared designs appear elsewhere on the site or can be viewed and downloaded by other users. Sharing also means choosing a license. FontStruct’s licensing FAQ states: “FontStruction designs belong to their designers. Simple as that. They do not belong to FontStruct.”

Decide on the license before sharing. FontStruct says a creator can change the license for future sharing, but an earlier download cannot be relicensed retroactively.

Using another designer’s FontStruct font

Read the license on the font’s homepage and in the ZIP before using someone else’s work. FontStruct says many licenses permit commercial use, but all licenses currently in use require credit to the original designer. If the license is unclear, contact the designer rather than assuming a use is allowed.
