File Converter is a free Windows utility that adds file conversion options to File Explorer’s right-click menu. How File Converter works
The Tichau project describes File Converter as a tool for converting and compressing files through Windows Explorer’s context menu. Its GitHub repository says it can handle one or several files. PCWorld reports that users can select multiple files, choose a target format, and customize which presets appear in the menu and how they are configured.
- Install File Converter on a Windows PC.
- In File Explorer, select a supported file—or multiple files if you want to process them together.
- Right-click the selection and choose File Converter.
- Choose one of the output formats offered for those files and let the app convert them.
For example, PCWorld describes converting a HEIC photo to JPG from the context menu. The precise choices depend on the input file; the app’s format list does not mean every listed format can be converted to every other one.
Which formats can it convert?
The official File Converter format list groups supported outputs by media type. It lists common image, video, audio, and document formats, with Office and OpenDocument types among the document inputs. Check the official list for the exact input and output pairing you need before relying on a particular conversion.

Can it convert Word or Excel files to PDF?
File Converter lists PDF as a document output and supports Office-file conversions only when Microsoft Office is installed and activated on the computer. That requirement applies if you want to convert Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents; the app is not a substitute for Office’s conversion components on a PC without them.
Is File Converter free and private?
The project repository identifies its license as GPL-3.0. PCWorld describes the app as free and open source, with no ads, and reports the app’s claim that it does not collect data. That privacy statement is a claim attributed to the app and PCWorld, not an independently verified privacy audit.
