Zeal is a free, open-source desktop app for searching programming documentation offline. Download compatible Dash-format docsets to your computer, then search one set or several without needing an internet connection. The project’s official site currently links Windows and Linux downloads and directs macOS users to Dash; platform availability can change.
What is Zeal?
Zeal is an offline documentation browser inspired by Dash. It uses the Dash docset format, letting you keep a local library of technical references and search it when you are offline. The project describes its aim as “Your personal reference library, searchable in an instant.” That is the project’s tagline, not an independent performance benchmark. Zeal project repository
Offline availability depends on downloading the docsets you need: Zeal’s positioning is local lookup, not automatic synchronization of local copies with upstream documentation.
Which platforms and docsets are available?
At the time reflected by the official Zeal website, it displayed version 0.9.1, linked downloads for Windows and Linux, and directed macOS users to Dash. These are a snapshot of the project’s published options, not a guarantee that availability remains unchanged.

The same website advertised 981 docsets, including user-contributed entries. A catalog count does not establish that every entry is current or equally maintained, so check whether the specific documentation you need is available and suitable.
The project README says Windows builds require Windows 10 version 1809 or later. Its listed CMake, Ninja, Qt, libarchive, SQLite, and related requirements are for building Zeal from source; they should not be mistaken for ordinary end-user installation requirements. Zeal project repository

How to install docsets and search them
- Open the library: In Zeal, choose File → Docset Library.
- Select documentation: Choose the docsets you want, then download them. Only downloaded docsets are available as local references.
- Search one docset: Prefix the query with its docset name and a colon. For example,
cpp:vectorscopes the search to the C++ docset. - Search several docsets: Separate docset names with commas, followed by a colon and the query. For example,
python,django:string. - Launch with a query (optional): The README gives
zeal python:pprintas an example command.

Can you use a shortcut or search from an editor?
The Debian manual documents a global Alt+Space shortcut, which can be customized, along with integrations for Emacs, Sublime Text, and Vim. These are documented workflows; whether a global shortcut is convenient or available depends on your desktop environment and configuration. What license does Zeal use?
The project README states that Zeal is licensed under GNU GPL version 3 or later. Bundled third-party components may have separate terms; the project points to the repository’s LICENSES directory for those texts. Zeal project repository
Is Zeal a good fit for your workflow?
Zeal is a practical option if you want local, searchable technical references and the docsets you need are available for your platform. Before relying on it, check the current download options and the coverage and maintenance status of the specific docsets you use. If choosing among documentation tools, compare offline access, platform support, docset freshness, scoped or multi-docset search, editor and keyboard workflows, and licensing.
