KeyError: None means Python tried to look up the key None in a mapping, but that key was not present at that moment. It does not mean dictionaries cannot use None as a key. Find the failing lookup in the traceback, trace how its key value became None, then decide whether a missing key should receive a fallback or be treated as an error.

What causes KeyError: None?

Python raises KeyError when a mapping does not contain the requested key. The Python documentation defines it as “Raised when a mapping (dictionary) key is not found in the set of existing keys.” (Python Built-in Exceptions.) The None in the message identifies the requested key; it does not indicate that the dictionary itself is None.

A dictionary can contain None as a key. For example, {None: "value"}[None] succeeds. KeyError: None occurs when the mapping being accessed does not contain that key at the time of the lookup. Python’s dictionary documentation describes strict subscription lookup and key membership (Mapping Types — dict).

Usually, the useful question is not “Why can’t a dictionary use None?” but “Why did this lookup receive None, and should that key have been present?” The traceback and the values at the failing line are needed to identify the specific cause.

How to diagnose the failing lookup

  1. Read the full traceback. Locate the final line that raised the exception and identify the expression being evaluated, such as data[key]. If that line calls another function or uses a mapping-like object, inspect the full call stack; KeyError applies to mappings generally, not only built-in dictionaries.
  2. Inspect the key and available keys at that point. Temporarily print repr(key) and the keys, or pause in a debugger. For example: print(repr(key), list(data)). Using repr() helps distinguish actual None from the string 'None'.
  3. Trace where the key came from. Check the code that assigns or returns it. Possible causes include an optional field missing from parsed input, a function that returned None, an incorrect nested lookup, a misspelled key, or a mismatch in key type or format.
  4. Check whether the key is present. Evaluate key in data. If it is false and absence is expected, choose a deliberate handling rule. If it is false unexpectedly, correct or validate the upstream data that was supposed to provide the key.

For example, if the exception occurs at value = data[key], inspect both key and data immediately before that statement. Do not infer the cause from the exception text alone.

Choose a fix that matches the data contract

First decide whether a missing key is valid, whether a default has the right meaning, and whether the program must distinguish a missing key from one whose stored value is None. The correct fix depends on those requirements.

Situation Pattern Behavior
Absence is valid and there is a meaningful fallback data.get(key, default) Returns the existing value or the supplied fallback without inserting a key.
You must distinguish absence from a stored None key in data, or a unique sentinel with get() Lets you handle a missing key separately from an existing key whose value is None.
The key is required and absence is an error data[key], or a narrow try/except KeyError Preserves failure or handles the missing-key case explicitly.
A missing key should be created in the dictionary data.setdefault(key, default) Returns an existing value, or inserts and returns the default if the key is missing.

Use get() for optional keys with a real default

value = data.get(key, "fallback")

Replace "fallback" with a value that makes sense for your application. If you omit the second argument, get() returns None when the key is absent. It does not raise KeyError for that missing key (dict.get()).

Do not use a fallback merely to silence an exception. If later code requires a real value, an arbitrary default may hide bad input and cause a less obvious problem.

Use membership when a stored None is meaningful

if key in data:
    value = data[key] # The value may be None.
else:
    handle_missing_key()

data.get(key) alone cannot distinguish an absent key from a present key that stores None; both produce None. A membership test makes that distinction explicit (dict membership).

If you prefer a default-returning expression, use a unique sentinel:

missing = object()
value = data.get(key, missing)
if value is missing:
    handle_missing_key()

The sentinel must be a distinct object that cannot also be a legitimate dictionary value. get() accepts a caller-provided default (dict.get()).

Keep required lookups strict, or handle the exception narrowly

try:
    value = data[key]
except KeyError:
    handle_invalid_or_missing_data()

Keep the try block limited to the lookup. A broader block can accidentally catch a KeyError raised by unrelated code and treat it as if this particular key were missing. If the key is required, fixing the producer or validating its input is often clearer than returning a misleading fallback.

Use setdefault() only when insertion is intended

value = data.setdefault(key, default)

If the key already exists, setdefault() returns its value. If it is missing, the method inserts the default into the dictionary and returns it (dict.setdefault()). Choose this only when changing the mapping is part of the intended behavior.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming None cannot be a dictionary key: It can. The error says this mapping did not contain the requested key when the lookup occurred.
  • Replacing every lookup with get(): That may conceal required data being absent, and a plain get() cannot tell absence from a stored None.
  • Trusting that a key is present because it should be: Check the actual runtime key, its type and spelling, and the mapping’s contents at the failing line.
  • Checking membership and assuming the key cannot change: In concurrent code, a check followed by a separate operation is not necessarily atomic. Python documents this issue for multi-operation sequences such as checking membership and then deleting (Mapping Types — dict). Handle absence at the operation or synchronize access as appropriate for the program.
