Spray is an open-source JavaScript app that presents text as a rapid sequence of words in one place. That RSVP format can reduce ordinary eye movements across lines, but there is no evidence in the reviewed sources that Spray itself makes people read faster while preserving comprehension. Research on RSVP more broadly finds a speed–accuracy trade-off.
What is Spray Speed-Reader?
Spray is the project in the jeffp123/spray GitHub repository, which describes it as “An open-source speed-reading application written in Javascript.” The project says it was inspired by OpenSpritz and includes that project’s algorithm and styles. A separate repository named rollecode/speed-reader is a different project, despite the similar name.
Spray uses Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP): words appear one after another in a fixed location rather than as lines of text read across a page. The approach minimizes the need for line-by-line eye movements during presentation. It does not, by itself, show that readers understand or remember material faster.
How do you get and run Spray?
The Spray README’s installation instructions say to copy files from the project’s content/ directory to a web server. The repository page reviewed reports no published releases. These instructions describe a deployment route, not a guarantee that a live demo, hosting service, or particular browser setup currently works.

A LinuxLinks listing published October 15, 2023 describes Spray as a JavaScript speed-reading tool where users can paste text and set words per minute. That is a secondary description; it does not establish current availability or browser compatibility. The sources reviewed do not establish Spray’s file-format support, navigation and rereading controls, accessibility options, privacy behavior, or current pace controls beyond that listing.
Can Spray help you read faster without losing comprehension?
That has not been demonstrated for Spray. The app’s repository describes its purpose and implementation, but the reviewed sources contain no controlled evaluation of Spray’s reading speed, comprehension, memory, or comfort.

A broader review by Keith Rayner, Elizabeth R. Schotter, Michael E. J. Masson, Mary C. Potter, and Rebecca Treiman, published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest in 2016, examines RSVP and speed-reading claims. It reports that comprehension and memory suffered in RSVP studies when the stream was sped up. The authors summarize the evidence this way: “The evidence indicates that there is a trade-off between speed and accuracy.” This conclusion concerns the research reviewed, not a trial of Spray.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What did a study comparing RSVP with ordinary reading find?
The 2016 review discusses an experiment in which participants could pause the RSVP stream. Average reading speed was 200 words per minute for traditional reading and 209 words per minute for RSVP. In that experiment, RSVP readers reported more eye fatigue and had poorer accuracy on literal-comprehension questions; accuracy on inference questions was equivalent. These are results from that comparison, not universal reading rates or Spray performance figures.

The small difference between those condition averages should not be mistaken for proof that RSVP reliably delivers faster reading with equal understanding. The review’s broader conclusion is that no quick, easy procedure has been shown to produce substantially faster reading while maintaining equivalent understanding. Skimming may be useful when thorough understanding is not the goal; the authors discuss reading practice and stronger language skills as ways to improve reading.

What can you conclude before trying Spray?
- Its purpose: Spray is an RSVP-oriented JavaScript project, inspired by OpenSpritz.
- Its evidence: The reviewed sources do not establish a Spray-specific benefit for speed, comprehension, memory, or comfort.
- How to judge your own experience: If you try the tool, compare it with ordinary reading on material you need to understand. Check recall and comprehension as well as the displayed words-per-minute setting; a faster setting alone is not proof of faster, accurate reading.
