Opengist is an open-source pastebin that you host yourself. It stores snippets in Git repositories, which you can manage through its web interface or standard Git commands. It may suit developers who want a Git-backed snippet service under their own administration; it is not simply another hosted account to sign up for.

What is Opengist?

Opengist describes itself as a “self-hosted pastebin powered by Git.” The project is licensed under AGPL-3.0 and presents itself as an open-source alternative to GitHub Gist. Its key distinction is deployment: you run and maintain the Opengist service, while its snippets are stored as Git repositories. You can work with them through the browser or Git clients. Opengist documentation · Project repository

That describes the operating model, not feature-for-feature parity with GitHub Gist or another paste service. The practical choice is whether you want to administer a service yourself in exchange for control over its deployment and configuration.

What can you do with it?

Opengist’s documentation lists the following capabilities. These are project-documented features, not results from an independent live deployment test. Official feature list

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Control snippet visibility: create public, unlisted, or private snippets.
  • Use Git: initialize, clone, pull, and push snippets over HTTP or SSH, with revision history.
  • Work with code and text: use syntax highlighting, Markdown and CSV support, code search, topics, raw-file downloads, and ZIP downloads.
  • Share and discover: browse users’ snippets, embed snippets, and use likes and forks.
  • Manage files and access: drag and drop files, use OAuth2 sign-in with GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, or OpenID Connect, and configure signup and anonymous-visibility controls.
  • Integrate and administer: use a JSON API, an admin panel, logging, and SQLite, PostgreSQL, or MySQL database options.

How does the Git workflow work?

The documented HTTP workflow begins with a local Git repository. You push it to Opengist either at a custom path under your authenticated username or to the special /init endpoint, which returns an automatically generated URL. The example in the official guide prompts for authentication during the push. The project also lists SSH as a supported Git transport. Git-based gist creation guide · Feature list

Because snippets are Git repositories, Git is central to the service rather than an optional export feature. Opengist says Git 2.28 or later is recommended; older versions have not been tested, and some features may not work. Opengist documentation

How can you install Opengist?

The project documents Docker and source-build installation paths. Its repository quick start describes a Docker Compose deployment served locally on port 6157. That is the documented quick-start setup, not a guarantee that a deployment will be reachable at that port under every configuration. Consult the current installation guide for the commands and platform-specific details before setting up a server. Repository quick start

Docker is a documented way to run Opengist, including with Docker Compose. The project also documents using Compose secrets for credential values. Configuration can be supplied through a YAML file or environment variables; options left unchanged use defaults. Configuration guide

What do the API and access controls offer?

The API reference describes token-authenticated REST access to gist and user resources. Tokens have per-resource read or read/write scopes. The API is enabled by default, and an administrator can configure Opengist to require login for both the API and web interface. Check the current reference and configuration before relying on particular behavior. API reference

Visibility choices, sign-in integrations, and a login-required setting are useful access controls, but they do not by themselves establish that a deployment is securely configured or guarantee encryption, resistance to threats, or a particular privacy level. The operator is responsible for evaluating and maintaining the deployment’s configuration.

Who should consider self-hosting it?

Opengist is a reasonable fit to consider if you want snippets managed through a browser and standard Git workflows, and you have an environment you can administer. Docker may simplify running the software, but self-hosting still means taking responsibility for the service and its configuration. The project does not specify a minimum hardware requirement or require a dedicated computer; a home server or mini PC is only one possible host, not a stated prerequisite.

If you want a service managed by someone else, Opengist’s self-hosted model may not be the right fit. The documentation establishes Opengist’s own capabilities, but does not provide a current feature-by-feature comparison with GitHub Gist or other hosted alternatives.
