What comes after AI-assisted programming is a move from asking AI for code suggestions to delegating larger, multi-step tasks to coding agents. These agents can inspect a project, make changes and use tools; people still need to set the goal, check the result and own the software that follows.
How coding agents differ from AI assistance
AI assistance usually means asking for an explanation, a code snippet or a completion while a person guides the work step by step. Agentic coding means assigning a broader task and allowing an agent to work through multiple steps: inspect relevant files, plan an approach, edit code and run tools such as tests. The distinction is the scope of delegated work, not a guarantee that the agent can finish correctly or safely without oversight.
| Workflow | What the AI does | What the person does |
|---|---|---|
| Code assistance | Suggests or explains code in response to prompts and nearby context. | Guides each step, integrates changes and checks the result. |
| Agentic coding | Attempts a defined, multi-step task using project context and available tools. | Sets boundaries and acceptance criteria, reviews the work and decides whether it is ready to keep. |
In practice, these modes can overlap. A coding agent may still ask for direction, and a person may use ordinary assistance to complete a task that could have been delegated. “Autonomous” describes how much work a tool attempts between instructions; it does not mean its output is dependable without verification.
What current usage data suggest
Usage is broadening beyond writing and repairing code, but the available numbers describe particular products and samples—not the software industry as a whole.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Claude Code sessions: Anthropic analyzed about 400,000 interactive sessions from about 235,000 people between October 2025 and April 2026. Within that sample, sessions classified as debugging fell from 33% to 19%; operating software rose from 14% to 21%, while writing and data analysis roughly doubled from about 10% to 20%. These are shares of Claude Code sessions, not shares of developers’ work across the industry. Anthropic also observed that people made most planning decisions while Claude made most execution decisions. Anthropic’s analysis of Claude Code use is observational and cannot establish that other products or users follow the same pattern.
- Longer tasks in Codex: In OpenAI’s reported May 2026 sample, more than 70% of Codex users asked for tasks estimated to take a person more than one hour. The estimate was generated by a model and is directional; it is not verified time saved. The individual-user analysis used a random 0.1% sample. OpenAI’s account of agent use also describes use beyond engineering, but its internal-workforce observations describe OpenAI, not a representative cross-company sample.
- Public-repository traces: A study cited by Anthropic estimated detectable coding-agent activity in 16–23% of public repositories at the end of October 2025. A follow-up using the same methodology found adoption more than twice as high among projects created after that point. The study looked for traces such as co-author tags and configuration files; it may miss activity and does not measure the percentage of programmers who use agents. The repository study is evidence of adoption signals, not a census.
Together, these findings suggest that some users are asking agents to handle broader tasks and applying them beyond code authoring. They do not establish a comparable, industry-wide productivity gain, job-impact figure or rate of successful delivery.
Where the human work moves
Delegating implementation does not remove the need for people who understand what the software is for. Human effort shifts toward choosing the right problem, giving an agent relevant domain context, defining what success looks like, and deciding whether a proposed change is correct and maintainable.

An exploratory OpenAI report looked retrospectively at eight scientific-computing projects: five used Codex alone and three used Codex with Claude Code. Contributors described moving from implementation toward verification and orchestration. Agents could handle scoped requests, but researchers could not rely on them to judge scientific validity. Instead, reviewers used external references, comparisons with known-good outputs, statistical checks, simulated data with known answers, iterative feedback and benchmarks. The report also emphasizes long-term ownership and maintenance; its eight cases illustrate practices, not a universal productivity result. OpenAI’s scientific-computing field report captures the distinction between generating an implementation and establishing that it is fit for use.
As Brent Pedersen, a contributor to the report, put it: “With coding agents, it’s quite easy to go fast; for now, to go far in science, there’s still a need for expert guidance, understanding, taste, and care.” That need for expertise applies wherever correctness depends on context that is not fully expressed in a prompt or test.

How to delegate without losing control
A practical agent workflow begins before code is generated. Make the task bounded enough to review, state what must remain unchanged, and decide how you will check the output.
- Define the outcome. Describe the user-visible behavior or engineering result, relevant constraints and what is out of scope. Ask for a plan first when the task touches unfamiliar or high-impact parts of the project.
- Set acceptance criteria. Name the tests, expected outputs, compatibility requirements or other observable conditions that would count as success. “Implement this feature” is not a checkable result by itself.
- Limit access to the task’s needs. Consider what files, tools, credentials and ability to execute commands the agent actually requires. More access can enable more work, but also increases the consequences of mistakes.
- Check behavior, not just the patch. Inspect the changes and run relevant tests. Where results have domain-specific meaning, compare them with external references, known-good cases or other independent checks rather than treating a passing test as proof of validity.
- Assign an owner after merge. A named maintainer should be able to explain the change, handle defects and keep it compatible with the rest of the system. Delegation is not a substitute for ongoing ownership.
The exact checks depend on the consequence of failure. A formatting change and a change that affects scientific results, security or user data do not warrant the same review. The more consequential the change, the more important it is to use checks that can expose errors beyond whether the code runs.

What this shift could mean for learning
There is a plausible trade-off for people still learning to program: if AI completes difficult work, a novice may miss some of the practice involved in debugging and building a mental model of the code. Anthropic’s 2026 study on AI assistance and coding-skill formation raises that concern, but its evidence is preliminary. The authors note limitations in the sample and in measuring immediate comprehension; long-term skill development remains unresolved. The study concerns AI assistance rather than establishing what happens when someone uses a full coding agent, so it should be treated as a learning risk to watch, not proof that novices will lose skills.
How to assess an agent workflow
There is no product ranking established by these findings. When deciding whether a coding agent suits a team or task, compare the workflow rather than assuming a tool that attempts more work is automatically better.

- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Task scope: Can it carry the relevant kind of task through, or does the work need to be broken into smaller steps?
- Access and autonomy: What project context and tools does it need, and what actions can it take without another instruction?
- Specification and verification: Can the person state success clearly, and are there meaningful ways to test the result independently?
- Workflow fit: Can people review and integrate its changes in the team’s existing development process?
- Maintenance: Who understands and supports the resulting code after the agent’s task ends?
The direction is toward delegating more implementation, not handing off responsibility. The useful question is not only how much an agent can produce, but whether people can specify, verify and maintain what it produces.
