It is a Python command-line utility: install it with pip, install Google Tesseract separately, then run textshot to draw a selection around the text.
What TextShot does
TextShot uses an on-screen selection overlay to capture a screen region, recognize the text in it, and copy the result to the clipboard. It is intended for content that is visible but cannot conveniently be selected in its original app, such as text inside an image. The project describes its purpose as: “Take a screenshot and copy its text content to the clipboard.” See the TextShot project documentation.
TextShot relies on Tesseract for optical character recognition (OCR). OCR output can depend on image quality and the language data available to Tesseract; the project documentation does not publish an accuracy or speed benchmark.
Install TextShot and its OCR prerequisite

Install Google Tesseract and confirm its executable is available from your command line. TextShot requires this separate OCR engine; installing the Python package alone is not enough.

Install the package with
pip install textshot.
PyPI lists TextShot version 0.1.2, released December 20, 2024, and specifies Python 3.7 or later and an MIT license. These are the package listing’s stated metadata, not confirmation of current compatibility or ongoing maintenance. See the TextShot PyPI listing.

Select the text region. TextShot sends the OCR result to the clipboard, where you can paste it into another app.

English is the default recognition language. To specify Tesseract language codes, pass them as the optional positional langs argument. The README gives eng+fra as an example for English and French. The matching Tesseract language data must be installed for the languages you request.
Use TextShot for repeated captures
For a region that changes over time, the project documents the --interval option, which repeats capture of the selected region at an interval measured in milliseconds. Its example is textshot --interval 200. This is a documented command example, not a performance recommendation or guarantee about how quickly a particular system will recognize and copy updates.

Platform setup and troubleshooting
The project says TextShot works on Windows, macOS, and most modern Linux distributions. Its README also offers platform-specific guidance; settings and clipboard behavior can vary by system.

macOS screen capture: If capture does not work, the project says you may need to grant screen-capture permission to the terminal application running TextShot.

Linux clipboard: If recognized text appears in a notification but cannot be pasted, the project suggests installing
xclip. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a requirement established for every Linux setup.Rank #4

Quick access: The README recommends binding a global keyboard shortcut to the command and includes a sample AutoHotkey script for Windows, as well as setup guidance for Ubuntu.
Is TextShot the right way to copy text from your screen?

If the source app already lets you select and copy its text, use that built-in option; it avoids the OCR step.

If the text is embedded in an image or otherwise unselectable, TextShot provides a selection-based OCR workflow, provided Tesseract is installed and your system allows screen capture.

If you need recognition in a language other than English, check that Tesseract has the corresponding language data before passing its code to TextShot.

If you need to capture a changing region repeatedly, consider the documented
--intervalmode; for a single capture, the default selection workflow is simpler.
The project documentation does not compare TextShot with other OCR tools or report measured recognition rates. Whether it fits depends on your source app, language setup, screen-capture permissions, clipboard support, and whether you need one capture or repeated captures.
