Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

The current setting is normally a ceiling—not a command that forces the connected device to draw that many amps.
Understand voltage, current, and power before connecting a load
Check the device’s rated input voltage and expected current, then confirm the supply can deliver that operating point. The key limits are maximum voltage, maximum current, and maximum power; a supply may not provide its maximum current at every voltage because its power envelope can constrain the combination. Estimate load power with P = V × I, using volts and amps to get watts. Tektronix’s programmable DC power supply technical information identifies these three maximums as the important application parameters.
In ordinary voltage-powered use, the supply sets voltage while the load determines how much current flows. The current control sets the upper limit. For example, if a load draws less than that limit at the selected voltage, the supply does not push the unused current capacity into it. The actual current depends on the load and voltage.
What CV and CC mean
Constant-voltage (CV) mode
CV is the usual mode for powering a circuit designed for a specified voltage. The supply regulates its output at the voltage setting while the load draws the current it needs, up to the configured limit.

Constant-current (CC) mode
If the load would draw more than the current limit, the supply can enter CC mode: it holds current at the limit and reduces output voltage as necessary. That change is current limiting, not evidence that the device is operating normally. Unexpected CC operation can indicate a short, overload, incorrect voltage, startup surge, or greater-than-expected load demand. Exact transition behavior depends on the supply model. Keysight’s user manual describes operation for a specific model; consult the manual for your own instrument’s behavior and limits.
Set up and use the supply
- Identify the load requirements. Find the load’s rated voltage and expected current in its documentation. Estimate power with P = V × I and check that the required operating point fits the supply’s voltage, current, and power ratings.
- Choose the voltage and current limit. For a voltage-powered load, select its required voltage and set a conservative current limit informed by expected operation and the device’s allowable current. Do not use the supply’s maximum current rating as the limit by default.
- Connect the load according to the instrument manual. Keep the output disabled during connection if the manual calls for it. Terminal layout, grounding, isolation, protection behavior, and connection sequence differ among models, so there is no universal switch sequence.
- Enable output and observe operation. Check the actual voltage and current readings and whether CV or CC is indicated. If the output is in CC unexpectedly, investigate the load and wiring rather than assuming the device is working correctly.
When to use constant-current operation
Some loads are intended to be driven by current. For an LED application, for example, set the desired current and an appropriate voltage compliance limit, following the LED and supply documentation. In constant-current regulation, voltage changes as needed with the load; if the voltage limit is reached, the supply may no longer maintain the selected current. NI’s explanation of constant-voltage and constant-current regulation discusses this compliance limit.

A bare bench supply is not a universal battery charger. Battery chemistry, charge profile, protection, and temperature requirements call for appropriate charging equipment and the battery maker’s instructions.
Account for voltage drop in the leads
A supply normally regulates voltage at its output terminals. Resistance in the leads can make the voltage at the device lower than the supply’s displayed terminal voltage, particularly with high current or a low-resistance load. Use short, suitably rated leads with connectors compatible with the instrument and load.

If the supply supports remote sense, its separate sense connections can measure voltage at the load and compensate for lead drop within the instrument’s specified range. This four-wire arrangement must follow the model’s connection rules; do not leave required sense connections open or assume every supply has remote sense. Tektronix’s remote-sensing guidance explains the method. A multimeter can provide an independent check of voltage at the load, but its reading is separate from the supply’s own readback.
