Mup is a music-notation program that turns a text file describing music into a printable score in PostScript. It is built around writing notation as text rather than entering notes in a conventional graphical score editor. It can also generate MIDI, and an optional graphical companion called Mupmate is documented for working with the command-line program.
What Mup does
You describe the music in a text input file, then run Mup to produce score output. The Linux manual documents PostScript as the printed-score format and MIDI as another output mode. That makes Mup a text-oriented option for people who want to specify notation directly and generate a score file, rather than rely solely on point-and-click editing. Fedora’s Mup package record summarizes the package as a music-notation program that can also generate MIDI files.
How the workflow works
- Describe the music in a text file. Mup’s input is a written description of the score, not a score entered exclusively through a graphical editor.
- Generate an output. Use Mup to create PostScript for printing, or select its documented MIDI output mode when you need a MIDI file.
- Convert PostScript to PDF if needed. A 2019 technical guide demonstrates converting Mup’s PostScript output to PDF. Its example uses Mup 6.6, so it illustrates a workflow rather than guaranteeing current conversion instructions or release details. Read the technical guide.
Can you use Mup with a graphical interface?
Yes, but the documented core workflow is command-line oriented. Mupmate is described in the Linux manual as an optional graphical interface layered over the Mup command-line program. It is therefore useful to distinguish the program that processes the music description from its graphical companion: the existence of Mupmate does not make Mup a conventional graphical score editor.
Is Mup still available?
Fedora’s package index lists Mup version 7.2, release 4.fc44, for Fedora 44, with a build date of January 24, 2026. This establishes a Fedora package entry at that date; it does not establish that 7.2 is the latest upstream release or that this build is available for other operating systems. The 2019 guide calls Mup multiplatform, but that older description is not enough to confirm current operating-system support. Current upstream download choices and a complete support list are not established by the available documentation.

Who is Mup best suited to?
- Consider it if you are comfortable describing notation in text and want PostScript output for a printed score, with MIDI as another documented output option.
- Consider Mupmate if you want a graphical companion while using Mup, while recognizing that the underlying program is still based on text input and command-line processing.
- Look elsewhere if your central requirement is a fully graphical score-entry workflow. The available sources do not establish a current, feature-by-feature comparison with other notation programs.
