Aura is a package manager for Arch Linux that accepts pacman operations and adds a separate -A operation for installing packages from the community-driven Arch User Repository (AUR). It also documents package checks, installed-package snapshots, and individual package downgrades. Aura is a third-party project, not a separate Linux distribution or an official Arch Linux tool.
What Aura adds to Arch Linux
Aura was created to support building AUR packages alongside pacman. Its project documentation describes Aura as accepting pacman operations and their options, while keeping repository and AUR workflows distinct: -S is for repository packages and -A is for AUR packages. Beyond package installation, Aura documents system sanity checks, package analysis, and automated AUR installation. Its online user guide describes the software as GPLv3-licensed. The guide is available online; buying a book is not necessary to learn Aura’s commands.
How Aura’s repository and AUR operations differ
With Aura, the operation signals which package source you intend to use. Use the pacman-style -S operation for packages from configured repositories; use Aura’s -A operation for AUR packages. The project describes its approach as preserving pacman’s operations and options rather than replacing them with a wholly different command model.

The distinction matters because AUR entries are not official prebuilt repository packages. They are community-maintained build descriptions, including PKGBUILDs, used to build software with makepkg; the resulting package is then installed through pacman. The ArchWiki’s AUR guidance advises users to inspect PKGBUILDs and related files, warning that they are unofficial and have not been thoroughly vetted. Aura automates AUR access, but it does not make a build description trustworthy by itself.
How to install Aura
The Aura repository documents three AUR package choices and a manual Rust build. These are the project’s documented routes; the instructions do not independently establish current AUR listing status or compatibility.

After installation, the repository recommends running aura check. It also describes optionally creating ~/.config/aura/config.toml. For Aura 4.x, the project says Aura prompts for elevated privileges when needed, so users do not need to prefix Aura itself with sudo. Keep that guidance specific to the 4.x series rather than assuming it applies to every version.
Package checks, snapshots, and downgrades
Aura documents a check command that scans a system for irregularities and suggests fixes. Its repository also shows -B for saving or restoring installed package states and -C for downgrading an individual installed package.

These are package-management tools, not a guarantee of full system recovery. A saved package state should not be treated as a backup of user files or as a reversal of arbitrary system changes; the documentation supports the narrower claim that Aura can save and restore package states.

What Aura does not establish about other AUR helpers
Aura’s documentation describes its own command model and features, but does not establish a current feature-by-feature comparison with yay, paru, or other helpers. The available evidence therefore does not support claims that Aura is safer, faster, easier, or better maintained than those alternatives. The practical distinction established here is Aura’s documented separation between repository operations and AUR operations, along with its documented package-state and downgrade commands.
