Rhino Linux is an Ubuntu-based rolling-release distribution: it follows Ubuntu’s development branch and delivers ongoing package updates rather than relying on a conventional fixed-release cycle. It combines Pacstall with APT, Flatpak and Snap, and offers generic x86_64 and ARM64 installation images. That mix suits users who want newer software and can handle regular maintenance; it is less appealing if they want a slower-moving system with a predictable support cadence.

What is Rhino Linux?

Rhino Linux is a Debian-derived Linux distribution built on Ubuntu’s devel branch. The project’s stated aim is to pair that base with a community-driven package experience; it describes Pacstall as an AUR-like package layer for Ubuntu. Here, “AUR-like” describes the project’s intent, not an equivalence between Pacstall and Arch’s repositories or tooling. [Rhino Linux project]

It is not the Rhino 3D application, nor is it simply a renamed Ubuntu release. Its distinguishing choices are the development-branch base, rolling update flow and combination of package managers.

Is Rhino Linux a rolling release, and is it based on Ubuntu?

Yes to both. The Rhino Linux project says it uses Ubuntu’s devel branch rather than a conventional Ubuntu LTS installation. Since that upstream branch continues to change, Rhino receives updates through an ongoing stream. The project says this can bring package updates sooner, while also describing the branch as comparatively unstable; that is the project’s assessment, not a published head-to-head benchmark. Rolling updates and numbered ISO snapshots are different things. A snapshot is an installer image at a point in time; it does not mean existing systems only receive changes when a new image appears. Rhino’s release history notes that a running system may already have updates delivered through the rolling stream before the next ISO is published. [Rhino Linux at FOSDEM 2025]

What package manager does Rhino Linux use?

Rhino Linux integrates Pacstall for core utilities and applications. Its rhino-pkg tool, also called Rhino PKG, is a wrapper intended to search, install and update packages across several managers:

This is a multi-source setup, not one repository containing every package. Before installing software, check which source and manager provide it; packages with similar names can differ in origin, release timing or maintenance. For the current update syntax and recommended workflow, use Rhino’s official documentation rather than assuming a command from an older announcement still applies. [Rhino Linux at FOSDEM 2025]

x86_64 Unicorn 2.70 GiB 7.0.9-generic
ARM64 Unicorn 2.69 GiB 7.0.9-generic

These are generic architecture images, not evidence that every device using x86_64 or ARM64 is supported. Verify the target hardware and its boot requirements before choosing an image. The project separately announced UBXI Lomiri images for AMD64 and ARM64 generic ISOs as part of its 2026.1 snapshot news; do not confuse that announcement with the Unicorn images listed on the download page. What are the tradeoffs of Rhino Linux’s rolling model?

Why it may suit you

  • You want a rolling system based on Ubuntu’s ecosystem rather than a fixed LTS-style installation.
  • You are interested in Pacstall alongside familiar APT, Flatpak and Snap sources.
  • You are comfortable installing updates regularly and checking project notices when upstream changes cause problems.

What to consider before installing

  • Upstream changes can create maintenance work. Because the base is Ubuntu’s development branch, a change upstream may affect Rhino-specific tools or system behavior. The project has discussed the challenges of this arrangement, including exposure to the 2024 xz-utils incident; that context does not establish that every Rhino installation was compromised. [Rhino Linux at FOSDEM 2025]
  • Package problems may involve more than one manager. When troubleshooting, identify whether a package came from APT, Pacstall, Flatpak or Snap rather than treating all installed software as if it shared one update path.
  • Snapshots are not a fixed support calendar. The team said in its 2025.4 announcement that it aimed to publish more frequent, smaller maintenance snapshots in 2026 and separate ready platforms from those delayed by issues. It did not promise a set interval. [Rhino Linux 2025.4 announcement]

A concrete example of upstream-related friction came in a February 2026 project notice about a coreutils change affecting Pacstall. The notice suggested LC_ALL=C pacstall -U as a workaround for that incident. Treat it as dated troubleshooting advice for the reported issue, not as a routine command for every current system. Check the project’s current notices if Pacstall fails. [Rhino Linux project notice, February 2026]

How should you decide whether to use Rhino Linux?

Compare it with another distribution on the factors that will affect your daily use, rather than on the word “rolling” alone.

Factor Rhino Linux What to verify in an alternative
Base and update stream Ubuntu devel branch with rolling updates, according to the project. Whether it follows a fixed release branch or another rolling base.
Package sources APT, Pacstall, Flatpak and Snap are brought together through rhino-pkg. Which package formats and repositories it supports, and how they are managed.
Desktop and device coverage The 2026.1 download page listed generic x86_64 and ARM64 Unicorn images; Lomiri/UBXI images were separately announced. Whether an image exists for your exact device and desktop preference.
Maintenance expectations Ongoing updates can mean upstream changes, occasional troubleshooting and a need to follow advisories. How frequently updates arrive and whether you are comfortable maintaining that system.

Rhino Linux is a reasonable candidate if the combination of Ubuntu-derived software, rolling delivery and multiple package sources fits your priorities. If you need a more predictable change schedule or do not want to monitor upstream-related notices, a fixed-release distribution may be a better match. The available project material does not establish a comparative performance or security advantage over Ubuntu LTS, Debian, Arch or other rolling distributions.

How do you update Rhino Linux?

Use the update instructions in the current official Rhino Linux documentation for your installed version. The project’s 2025.4 announcement gave rpk update -y for updating to that snapshot at the time, but an announcement-specific command should not be treated as evergreen guidance. [Rhino Linux 2025.4 announcement]

If an update fails, note the exact error and identify the affected package manager. Check current project notices before applying a workaround copied from an older incident, since the February 2026 Pacstall advice addressed a particular upstream coreutils change rather than all update failures.
